Leapster Explorer Wolverine Game Reviews

Needs ESRB Rating - Too Violent
Leapfrog Wolverine Game - Too Violent ...the Leapfrog game Wolverine and XMen is way too violent for young minds...this game is unlike every other game Leapfrog offers...Leapfrog has marketed this product as a "spelling and word building" game...but is a straight 'up "fighting game"...that encourages violent acts, such as stabbing and kicking...Leapfrog has not responded to any of my feedback...that is another disappointment in it's self...I would imagine such a company would appreciate response from parents who purchase their products.

The Leapster Explorer is a handheld video game so one would assume they undergo the same content rating as all the other video games on the market...parents should have a better understanding of what they are buying.

Leapfrog video games should be rated by the Entertainment Software Rating Board.

Based on such ratings, the Wolverine game should have stated Cartoon violence...and would have displayedyed an "E" on the packaging...

EVERYONE
Titles rated E (Everyone) have content that may be suitable for ages 6 and older. Titles in this category may contain minimal cartoon, fantasy or mild violence and/or infrequent use of mild language.

I initially though it was just me but found lots of other reviews out on the Internet buy just using Google...

REVIEW LeapFrog Leapster Explorer Learning Game: Wolverine and the X-Men (Toy)
My son really seemed frustrated that he kept getting "killed" before he can even spell any words. It's very violent for the recommended age. For kids who have only watched Nick Jr. and were not exposed to violent video games or movies this is really disturbing. He frequently asks me if I can go back to putting his weekly spelling words on the Didj Sonic Hedgehog game instead since it always helped him get ready for spelling tests. Leapfrog needs a better spelling game for boys. This isn't what you would expect from them.

REVIEW: BUYER BEWARE!
Description:Leapster Explorer Game - Wolverine and the X-Men
I recently purchased the Leapfrog Leapster Game "Wolverine and the X-Men" and was extremely disappointed with the content of this game. The game is suppose to be an educational tool to promote spelling and word building skills but it more a "fighting" game. This is not appropriate for younger children and definitely not comparable to other Leapster Explorer games. I am surprised a product like this is considered for early development. The packaging of this product does not reflect the amount of "violence" this game actually has. Leapfrog has not responded to any of my feedback or concerns.

REVIEW: Do NOT buy this game September 21, 2010 Reviewer: Mom of 2 Boys "Mom of 2 Boyz" (OK, USA) See all my reviews >
After saving his pennies, my 5-year-old son purchased this game. I checked over the box and saw no violence warnings, or anything similar to that because I understand that the X-Men movie is not for children.
Upon getting the game home and letting him start to play it (with his 3-year-old brother over his shoulder) I was shocked and disgusted that this game was not only suggested to ages 5-9, but that it was supported by Leapster. This company touts itself as one that stands out by providing education and making it fun. It attempts to separate itself from the other game systems by providing family-approved fun.
While I am aware that the X-Men movie is not intended for children, I assumed that this game would not be like the movie. The box only discusses the grammar, word, and spelling benefits, and gives only a tidbit of information about the actual game activity. There was slashing, sword fighting, rock throwing, and general "murdering" of the bad guys. My son was hooked and could not get enough of killing the bad guys. He hadn't even seen one area where any type of spelling instruction took place until I asked him to.
He then showed me one tiny area where the objective is to add a couple of letters to complete a word. Wow. So kids ages 5-9 are able to mass murder and leave paths of destruction (in the name of what, I do not know), but not expected to be able to do more along the lines of the education, that was intended with the game, than adding a couple of letters? How is this possibly educational?
I am absolutely disgusted by this game, and frankly I have not been very pleased with the entire Explorer system. I have written a letter to the company, but have not yet been contacted by them.
In summary, I do not recommend this game for any child, but as a parent who only purchased this gaming system in order to avoid all the violence and desensitization that occurs in all of the other systems, I should not have bothered. And I certainly won't be supporting this company with any future purchases, and neither will anyone else I know.
