I attended the salon in Covent Garden for hair extensions to be added to my hair on the 26th January, within 2 weeks over 90% of these hair extensions had fallen out. These should last 2 to 3 months.
I rang the salon & spoke to Simon (I don’t know his last name) who said he would speak to Emma Bailey & ring me back. I left it but didn't hear back from him so I rang again & he said that he would need me to send him a photo of my hair as he knew this is what Emma would ask for. I took photos of my hair which only had a few extensions left in & looked awful & sent them to Simon.
I didn't hear back from him or Emma. I contacted them again to ask what was happening & received an email back from Emma saying that as "an act of goodwill" they would put more extensions in for me if I visited the salon. As I had to travel from Gloucestershire to London each time this would cost me at least £50 anyway but I was happy that they had agreed to rectify the situation. I then tried to confirm the date for me to have this done & again couldn’t get a reply. I eventually got a reply from Simon very late the night before (which I didn't see until the next morning) it was suggested I attend the salon stating that there would be an extra charge for putting in more bonds, despite the fact that Emma had already put in writing to me that they would be done as "an act of goodwill".
When I later told Emma that I was not happy to pay more money I started receiving abusive texts from her telling me to “get a job” and asking if I was a “toilet cleaner” & telling me not to ring or contact the salon again.
I have contacted Trading Standards/Consumer Direct & they have advised me that under the supply of goods & service act I am entitled to damages. This includes full reimbursement in the sum of £125 that I originally paid to the salon, the cost of having further extensions put in by an independent practitioner (£100) & my travel costs (£100) to London from Gloucestershire on the 26th January 2011 & again on the 25th February 2011 to have the replacement extensions, total damages due therefore amounts to the sum of £325. I have an independent hair extensions practitioner with years of experience who has already confirmed to me that the correct bonds were not used, this was done under Ms Emma Bailey's supervision, who was also heard to say in my hearing that the hair used had "been knocking around for ages".
On further investigation on the internet I have found other complaints against Emma Bailey who trades or has traded under Dream Extensions, Glamour Junkies, London Beauty Institute, National Beauty Institute & Superficial.
She has had action taken against her by Great Lengths hair extensions for advertising that she is an accredited practitioner of theirs, which she is not. I have spoken to great lengths myself & they confirmed this & knew immediately who I was talking about & said they get regular complaints about her.
I have sent her a recorded delivery letter (as advised to do by Consumer Direct) informing her that they have confirmed that I have a case for damages against her & her salon under the Supply of Goods & Services Act 1982 for the extensions that fell out, the replacement extensions & my travel costs for both the trips to London for these.
She has 14 days to reply but I doubt that she will to be honest. If she doesn’t I plan to take her to the small claims court to recover my money.
I am concerned about this woman’s practises because she is running an apparent beauty institute that offers training for everything from nails, hair colour, cutting, extensions, weaves, afro hair, you name it basically but I am not convinced from what I have seen & found out about her that she is qualified to do this but she is charging people thousands of pounds to attend these courses!
Through this experience & my enquiries following it I have unfortunately found out that the hair dressing industry is not regulated & that although I have absolutely no hairdressing experience or qualifications I could set up in business as hairdresser tomorrow. I find this quite shocking to be honest & think that the industry should be regulated ASAP!
