We received a call at our corporate office from this number. A woman claimed that she worked for a Dr. Patel and that they were interested in our billing services for their oncology clinic in New York. She did not seem interested in finding out more about our company or our services but asked for us to send her a current billing from one of our clients as a 'sample' via email. I explained to her the way that our proposals works and that I was unable to send such confidential documents to her and that any example forms would have to come from executive staff. She agreed but seemed adament that she needed it immediately and needed it sent electronically - which is something our clients have never done or asked for. Typically, a proposal is sent out via fed-ex and an electronic PDF version of the proposal ONLY will be emailed to the potential client. Upon asking her for specifics of her alleged business, she gave me the name of "Long Island Oncology Associates", a cell phone number that she could be called back on and an email address. She also gave me a very odd doctor/patient ratio with an unusually high number of doctors and low number of patients. When executive staff attempted to call her back, they received a strange pre-recorded generic voice message that did not indicate the name of the person who owned the phone. Several people tried and it would only go to voicemail. Upon doing some detective work, we came across this site with complaints in regards to this number. We also did an extensive search for a clinic with this name and found nothing. We found a clinic with a similar name in the area whom we called to ask if they had any knowledge of the person who was calling and they did not. A clinic that claimed to have so many doctors would most definitely, at the very least, be listed in the yellow pages if not have their own website. We found absolutely nothing. The phone company traced the number they were calling from to a residential area and not registered to a business. The woman called a total of 3x, with the second call coming in only an hour after the first, demanding the documents she requested and being very aggressive in her approach. The 3rd time she called, I informed her calmly and politely that the cell phone number she gave was going to voicemail and that the email address she gave was linked to a video game forum. She became irate and started yelling at me. She changed her story several times, screamed at me that she had the cell phone for 6 years and that it was in front of her so she would have heard it ring, and then said that it was a new phone and that she gave me her old cell phone number. She then also changed her email address, saying she gave me her "old" email address. Needless to say, I terminated the call. It appears that this number is trying to obtain confidential financial documents of other clinics/clients for an illegal purpose. They have made up n ames of companies and doctors that either don't exist or they have taken from other clinics in the area and tweaked to make it slightly different. Also, the woman gave me her name and it most definitely appeared to be a generic made up name. It also appears that the contact informations she gave out was given to her verbally and written down since she could not even remember which email and number she gave out. Be careful about these calls and do not send them any documentation. Even though she could not give her email address or phone number out correctly this time, it is not to say that she will not try again and attempt to be more precise. I am interested to see if any other health care consulting and billing practices have received similar calls.
