I signed up for a $20 for 20 Sunday papers from a neighborhood kid selling subscriptions. I wrote a check to the daily news, I started receiving my Sunday papers, the service then ended after the 20 weeks which was sometime in December 2010. I never received any phone calls or letters from the Daily News asking if I wanted to subscribe again. Last night, April 12, 2011, I received a phone call from Coast to Coast Financial Solutions, a debt collection agency. They said I owed the Daily News $15. I had no idea what for. They said it was for subscriptions I received but hadn't paid for. I let them know I only signed up for a certain amount of weeks and I had never authorized another subscription. I also never received any more papers than the 20 weeks I originally paid for. So the Daily News is trying to bill me for services they never performed. Upon further research, I discovered that the Daily News has a BBB rating of C+ for many complaints relating to them not performing according to their contract. I also discovered that this scam is common among many newspaper groups, particularly the Los Angeles Times. This is criminal to charge someone money for services they never authorized, nor ever received. The Daily News never sent me any bills either, they sent it straight to collections which could negatively impact my credit score.
