Safe Deposit Box Policy
Do not open a safe deposit box at any M&T Bank.
If you do or already have one, make sure that you never close out a safe deposit box before your paid up year / annual fee is up. While most other banks will prorate a refund for the portion of the year that remains. M & T Bank does NO refund. I had a safe deposit box with them for many years. The $125 annual box fee was paid in full in January. The box was closed out in mid-March --- approximately $90 they keep. The "theft" of this is that they can still rent the box during the time that remains of my $90 and make an additional $90. The "customer service" staff just kept repeating the "company line."
This is true double dipping -- consumer rip-off at its best.

Bank Rep Lied
Upon realizing that my $2200 paycheck from work had not cleared yet, I called M & T bank to inquire. The rep told me that it is a mistake and everything is cleared. I then utilized my debit card to make a few daily purchases throughout the next day. Woke up today, and I have 10 overdraft fees on my account amounting to $370.00...on top of that my paycheck STILL have not cleared. Spoke to another rep today, and then a supervisor, and supervisor tells me that unfortunately she doesn't care what I'm telling her (that a rep of hers told me my funds were available) she is not going to remove the overdraft fees. She continued to tell me that she won't play the game of "he said she said"...to which I responded "Please review the recorded phone conversation that I had with your representative"... The Supervisor said that she would review the conversation, but either way, she will never remove the overdraft fees.
I was TRICKED into getting $370 in overdraft fees by M & T Bank!
Scams!

Awful Customer Service
M&T Bank displayed the worst customer service I have ever experienced. I had to request a new debit card 3 times from the bank becuase they never sent it. Once I finally received my Debit card, they failed to give me a PIN code. I had to request a PIN code throught he mail. After 10 days, I hadn't received the PIN code and they claimed to send it. I made one last request and it was not sent so I called them and vented my frustration. The customer service representative made no effort to remedy the situation and blamed the Post Office. The Manager I spoke with ensured that their policy is to provide me with a confirmation number when iinformation is sent to the customer. I WAS NEVER GIVEN A CONFIRMATION NUMBER FOR ANY OF MY REQUESTS. This bank is horrible. I would recommend you to stay away from M&T at all costs. They are absolutely worthless and should be shut down.

Overdraft
On 12/30/2009 I deposited a check for $10000 into my checking account. The check was from my Charles Schwab account and was written to me by Charles Schwab. Today I looked at my account and M&T had put a two day hold on the check. The checks I wrote for the end of the year bills caused M&T to draw $2500 from my overdraft protection.
They never notified me and because I had their $2500 for seven days I had to pay $12.30 for the privilege.

NSF
There have been many times when I have had checks cleared and I was still charged NSF. When I called and asked about it, they say that there is pending withdraws against my account and this will cause the NSF. Even if I didn't do it, they are telling me that there is a back room screen that they use to decide on doing this. They say if someone is checking on an amount in my account for future purchases they will hold the money for three days and if I have a check come in and they are still waiting on this time to pass and there isn't enough money in my account to cover the three day hold and the check I will be charged. I would really like for someone to check into this. It doesn't seem very fair that they can do that with someone's money.

Unlawful Overdraft Fees
In the last two weeks M & T Bank took out insufficient fund fees from my acount at least eight times. I have repeatedly had to email them with their mistakes, but only received three of the fees back as they called it a "Courtesy". Sorry, but it was their mistake and not a courtesy. This bank really is horrible. The fees against my account were taken when clearly there was a positive amount in the account. It only became negative when they incorrectly placed INF's on my account. I am already looking for another bank.
Also, the online banking is a joke. The companies i pay through this system complain that they are not receiving the checks two weeks after i have them taken out.
All former Provident bank customers...Find another bank to handle your affairs because this one is a wolf in sheeps clothing.
Then again I guess the customers have to help them fund the Ravens.

Service Fees
I changed jobs and no longer had direct deposit. I called M&T to ask if I need to change my account type, and they said as long as I kept $2500 in my checking and linked accounts I would received no service charges. The next month, I received a $5.95 service charge. I called and they said that I had to keep $1500 in THAT account and $2500 total, but they did reverse the charge and change my account type.
The next month I got charged two fees of $2.95 each because I had enrolled in (but never used) web bill pay. There is no way to unenroll without contacting M&T directly. The reason I got charged TWO fees for ONE account is because I had enrolled under my user name online and my husband's. BUT IT IS STILL JUST ONE ACCOUNT!! It is a joint account, but I can't unenroll the account, just myself. Now he has to call and cancel his enrollment for the same account.
I USED TO have my mortgage through them (notice past tense). I would send extra principal payments of $50 or $100, and they misapplied them on 2 or 3 times in a 4-year period. Two specific ones I remember are a $100 payment I made and they reversed (even though it cleared my checking account)--I called them about it and they "fixed it" by crediting it a week later. The second was a $50 payment that was "applied", but it was "applied" to nothing...it showed up in the transaction detail, but didn't come off the principal. Their response was always "I don't know why that happened".

Not handicapp accessible
Tell me how in the year 2008 we have a main branch in Monroe ny that is not handicap assessible. Do you know what a teller says after i have to assisted my dad who is legally handicap upper a set of step where he can not even hold on to the handrails because their too thick and he has arthritis in both hands. Then after the hassle of getting up the steps we go to the teller and tell her what just happen and how it was very difficult for my dad to come inside. She says " well the new building will be handicap assessible" Great but how does that help me now. then to top it off we were treated as if we didn't matter and when ask to speak to branch manager he was to busy to help and there was nothing that could be done He didn't even come out to the office to access the situation. How can people be so cold, rude, and uncaring of a persons situation. A long term customer doesn't matter away more . what does matter is how much you can give them and then they might be able to help. so unless you are very wealthy do not open a account with M & T bank because customer with a set income or hard working family are not the kind of customers they want. So watch your money with M & T they are crooks.

NSF
I can not belive how M&T bank can charge insufficient charge before the charge is actually posted. I go into the one local branch and the customer service tellers are nasty, rude and talk to you as if you own them more money just because. when i ask for them to explain how on black in white its show the money is in the account but they still charged me two 37.oo charges while my account still shows positive. How, why, and the response i get is " well the way the system posted it it show negitive even though it's still shows postive. Does this make any sense. The way the system works sucks and i wish we would all band together and tell all banks to go and shove their NSF where the sun don't shine!!! us working class don't have NSF to share with greedy banks.

Incorrect NSF fees
There is an erroneous NSF fee posted to my account. I called M&T Bank at 10am on Saturday 5/24/08. The girl who answered the phone told me the NSF fee was posted to a transaction at a mini-mart a week prior to my call. My account online showed it was posted to an ATM withdrawal 2 days prior to my call. She was confused, put me on hold, then came back on and told me that "Josh" would call me back by 12pm. Today is 5/28/08...I still have not heard from "Josh". I work full time, and do not have the opportunity to go to the branch office or to make repeated phone calls to them. This happened to me in February, too. This bank has taken NSF fees out of my account on numerous occasions for no apparent reason. When I call, they give me a half-baked excuse. I will be closing this account, because what recourse do I have? It's a bank, they know what they're doing with my money, right? I don't think so!! They have also refused to help me with a transaction a different company posted to my account, which resulted in an NSF fee. The other company refunded me, but will not send a letter to M&T on my behalf to have the NSF fee reversed. I offered to fax the email stating that to M&T, they said basically that I'm out of luck. I have all the emails that went back and forth between myself and an M&T customer service rep, and the emails from the other company that I should be able to use to clear this up. M&T is more interested in keeping my money than in helping me clear up an error on my account.
