insurance scam
PLEASE BEWARE--anyone considering doing business (roofing) with Magic City Construction located in Pelham, AL. should reconsider. Less than 2 months ago, this company( located at this same address and telephone number) was doing business under the name of Southern Armor Construction; I know because I foolishly made the mistake of dealing with them in November 2010. As much as I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt, I'm now more than ever convinced that they are nothing more than scammers, and I don't know why (or how) they are able to continue operating in the state of Alabama. When I became suspicious of them and did my homework, it was too late. I discovered that they'd only been in business at the Pelham location since Jan 2010 and complaints had been filed that they were recently located in Huntsville, AL; in addition, complaints suggested that they were the same people that operated under the name of the defunct American Shingle. When I confronted the employee sent to collect the first insurance check, I was told that they had worked for American Shingle Roofing but were not affiliated with that company or it's business practices. Like an idiot, I bought into his story. But it's not too late for anyone out there currently considering allowing this company to replace your roof. All they want is 100% of your homeowners insurance money. And that's what they collected from me (approximately $8K). I've since learned that a reputable roofer would have only charged about half that amount and I would have a valid warranty--not a worthless one. Just the other day, we noticed that some shingles already look as if they are buckling. I'm sick with the thought of having to get another company out here to make repairs because I now know Southern Armor (aka Magic City Construction) or whatever they're calling themselves isn't going to honor their supposedly 25 year warranty; that was just a gimmick to fleece me. I think it borders on criminal that this company can change its name whenever (and as often) as necessary when things get "hot" in order to continue to take advantage of unsuspecting homeowners. I wonder how long they'd stay in business if the insurance companies only paid enough upfront to purchase supplies and then used an independent inspector to inspect their work before mailing out the balance (similar to the way reputable roofers do business)? Please check them out; they aren't going to do anything special to get you approved for a new roof, and they certainly aren't going to deal w/the insurance company on your behalf. They faxed my insurance adjusters contact information and asked me to call to find out when that final insurance check would arrive; I couldn't understand why they they were asking me to call since I was told that they would deal with the insurance company. Don't be lulled into a sense of security simple because this company was referred by a neighbor or friend; all that suggests is that they did a good job scamming them as well.
