monthly bill
I purchased a magic jack at Wal-Mart. On the package, it stated that the 39.95 payment was all that I had to pay for one year of service. When hooking up my phone, I had questions about the payment, because I went to the email link and I went to the FAQ page. I read a question, from a person who asked if there were any other charges. The answer was no, there was no other charges, but when recieving the email, I was told that a 14.95 a month bill would be billed on my regular phone bill each month. Is this not false advertising?

Doesn't work
The old addage is, "You pay for what you get." And how true that is.
I had problems with Magic Jack from day one. It took 3 dials to get thru, all my calls got disconnected, voice mail didn't work, 911 didn't work and I needed that service one night, etc, etc.
Then my computer crashed and I had a new hard drive installed and it worked like a charm for 3 months.
But, now it's not working at all. The dial pad wont come up, and you can't dial out and you can't receive calls. I've had this for 10 months and it's only worked for 3 out of the 10 months.
They have polite customer service tech's that will walk you thru troubleshooting, but there is never a resolution and I have spent 3 days and endless hours trying to get this solved.
They just keep walking you thru the same steps and nothing gets solved. And if you ask for a new one, they want $39.95 to hold until they get the old one back. The premise being that their honesty and integrity is better than yours. We don't trust you to return the old one even though it's not working and you paid for it up front, but you need to trust us that we won't run your card thru again.
It worked for 3 months and I got my moneys worth, but barely, and I''m going to get another phone service. I had big expectations about Magic Jack and they really disappointed me.
If you think about all the on-line tech support chats that I had because there is no phone number to call and all the problems, it wasn't that great of a deal. Time equals money.
I had recommended this to several people, but I will bad mouth Magic Jack from this day forward.
Don't get it. They advertise heavily but don't stand behind their product.

Fraud
I ordered in or about April or May of 2008 a Magic Jack device with a 5yr service license for $46.90. I ordered this for family in Europe with a US phone # to make calling easier and cost-effective. My family tried to use it today (5/23/09) to discover the license had expired. I contacted Magic Jack via online chat and was speaking to Ruby, who in the end informed me that my order was never placed nor shipped. The device was received and the service has been previously used to make calls. She transferred me to an upper level support manager - Maya - who was rude and could not write correctly. She persisted in telling me that my order was "killed" and that I never ordered a 5yr service license, that I never received the device, and that I was never charged the $46.90. I informed her that I did receive the device and that I was charged on my credit card $46.90. Maya proceeded to argue with me that I did not get the device, that I was not charged or anything. She said I had to call my credit card company for the money...which I did initiate a billing dispute during my chat session with my credit card company. As I was extremely livid over the situation, I was going to file complaints with the BBB, the Florida Attorney General's Office, the State's Attorney's Office for West Palm Beach, FL, the FCC, the FTC and any other government agency as appropriate. I did in fact file a complaint with the BBB and the Florida Attorney General - and was much surprised to find out over 1, 000 complaints were already filed with the BBB (yet they still gave the company a high rating) and as a result of those complaints the FL Attorney General's Office filed a complaint on behalf of 500 consumers for the same type of fraudulent and deceptive practices. I will be filing a complaint with the other agencies shortly. I also contacted PC Magazine to request that they retract their recommendation of this product / service. It is a TOTAL SCAM!!! Do NOT purchase this and please SPREAD THE WORD!!!

ending service prematurely
On May 20, 2008 I ordered 4units with 2 year service for each. The promotion at that time stated the units were FREE and each year service was $19.95...they cut me off and will only respond via "online chat"that "the units were $39.95 with 1 year free service"...they billed my credit card for $173 for 4 units !T hey claim I did not sign up for extra year. They refuse to acknowledge the second year.! They ran a fraudulent ad campaign! DO NOT BELIEVE THEIR ADS!!!
The device works mostly ok, sometimes you need to disconnect & reconnect later) BUT ONLY PAY FOR ONE YEAR AT A TIME!!!

No contact inf. or Customer Service number.
This Company does not offer a Customer Service number by which I can get a RMA Return Merchandise Authorization number. There is no 8oo number to call. The home page offers nothing to help me contact them.
It all seem a big scam.

defective product-poor customer service
i bought the magicjack and after 3 months, it stopped working. i used the online chat 4 DIFFERENT TIMES and it still doesn't work. i have purchased new phones, rebooted my computer, downloaded about 16 gazillion updates (and i'm concerned now that all of these updates might have damaged my computer), installed divx, and basically done just about everything except bang the side of the computer (hell, that might have worked).
finally, i get a rep named "nadia" who basically told me, that i was SOL! she could not give me a replacement, nor could she refund my 5 year contract that i PAID FOR!
i have decided to file a complaint with the BBB. eff magic jack!

watch out. I never orderd magic jack but there it was on my credit card. not only that but it says i ordered 5 years of magic jack service!! after waiting for 40 minutes for a live person i got online for a live chat and yes it does seem that they're automated. same questions. she had a bill and everything that i supposibly did. I did not do this or authorize the charges to my credit card. she said they ask for the security 3 digits on the back of your credit card so it had to have been someone who had access to it. well it's just me and my husband and we're shocked to see charges for over 250.00 on our credit card bill. I think magic jack stole my credit card info from another site. signed me up for alot of their products and service and kinda hoped i wouldnt notice the charges or maybe find it to difficult to get it sent back in since you cant talk to anyone.

no service
When I bought my Magic Jack one Year ago it was sold at our local mall. I paid $55 for the Magic Jack unit plus 2 years service. Now after one year my service expired and Magic Jack refuses to recognise my second year. They tell me that it is not sold that way. I tried over and over again but I can't get them to understand that even with my receipt. Besides that you can't speak to anyone on the phone. You must communicate by internet texting.

Porting of Number - Delay
When I originally ordered my magic jack, porting of other numbers would be available very shortly. Every time I check the website the date is later and later, as well as, more vague. If you were thinking of porting - you can't. Just think of it as unavailable.
