RIP OFF, DISHONEST, FRAUDULENT, DISCOURTEOUS, LIES, HEARTBROKEN...JUST A FEW WORDS TO DESCRIBE MY EXPERIENCE. THIS WAS THE WORST COMPANY I HAVE EVER WORKED WITH IN ANY INDUSTRY PERIOD!!!
Please be aware that this has been the absolute worst experience, whether personal or professional, that I have ever encountered. The stresses of moving across country are great. I therefore researched and evaluated the moving companies on a very detailed level.
I decided to use Manchester Moving due to the initially courteous nature of their representatives and the competitive pricing afforded to me. Boy was I wrong. Tony was my salesperson and ended up being the worst salesperson I've ever encountered. During the course of working with Manchester Moving I sent numerous emails indicating that I needed a detailed estimate and confirmed that the estimate would be accurate as to the items listed to be moved. I revised the estimate several times as I sold and removed items from the moving list. I confirmed the estimate several times. Manchester Moving, on several occasions represented to me that the estimate would be for the items listed and as long as the items listed were accurate, then the estimate would be the "final price". I informed the sales person of every detail, including the fact that I had a mirror attached to my dresser and that I had a wood framed bed that accompanied the queen size bed. I was informed that, "as long as its a queen bed the estimate would be accurate". They could not have been more wrong or misleading.
I informed the sales person, Tony, that I would need and estimate for certain items, including 20 "medium" boxes. Unaware of the square footage for medium boxes, as it is not common knowledge, I confirmed that standard medium moving boxes could be obtained. I purchased standard "medium" boxes and packed approximately 20 medium boxes for moving, in addition to several items specifically outlined to the sales person.
I received prompt follow-ups and estimations, that is, until I provided my down payment. From that point on, the sales staff failed to respond in a timely manner, necessitating several follow-up emails for a response. I should have realized then that my move was in the wrong hands, however I decided to give them the benefit of the doubt as it is the busy moving season.
Upon the arrival of the moving company, I was informed that my estimated amounts were substantially underestimated by Manchester Moving. The "medium" boxes that I purchased were substantially larger than the "medium" boxes that Manchester Moving estimated. As I am not in the moving business and this is my first move across country necessitating a moving company, I relied on the companies experience to tell me how large medium boxes were. They new the variations in the standard shipping sizes, however chose to omit any details that would raise the estimate.
With the exception of a few floor lamps, a small (two drawer) filing cabinet, and a 1' by 3' jewelry box, the items moved were exactly what I informed the moving company the items would be.
With that being said, the actual square footage of my items literally doubled, bringing my estimate from approximately $1200.00 to over $2000!!! I called to inform the sales person, Tony, that he substantially underestimated the price and that he needed to contact the movers at my home. He said he would immediately and would get back to me. He did not. He left the office that day, in the middle of my move, without even following up or calling the movers to straighten the issues out. I forced the movers to call the manager on his cell phone to discuss the issues. Finally, after over an hour, I contacted the manager, Al, and he told me that he could take a little over $100.00 off for now and would need authorization to reduce it more. In hindsight, it was obvious that he was just trying to get off the phone with me and allow the movers to be on their way. He had no intention of lowering the cost any more.
Manchester Moving clearly underestimated the price for the sole purpose of retaining my business with the absolute knowledge that once my items were on the truck, they would have all the leverage and hold my items hostage, as they did and I will discuss further. In essence, Manchester Moving have indicated that "If I had had just the items on the estimate, then the price would have been accurate." That is completely and utterly inaccurate as the items I have listed above as being in addition to the estimate, IN NO WAY DOUBLED the square footage for my move. Therefore, the only logical conclusion that any one, including a court of law, can make is that the "estimate" which I confirmed over and over again to be accurate, was substantially and grossly underestimated. Again, it was clearly done for the purpose of obtaining my business and then, once my items were in their possession, retain all the leverage to do with my items as they pleased.
Once my items were on the truck, my numerous phone calls to the manager Al, went unanswered for days. One week, 7 days, later I finally reached Al and inquired as to the status of the move and the request for the reduced cost. Al forwarded the call to Imad, his supervisor to discuss the moving times and cost. Imad stated that the truck was still in Chicago, after one week though it is only a 5 hour drive from my residence, and that the truck was to be leaving directly to California the next day. I was informed that, as the truck was going directly to California, I would have my items delivered in San Diego within 3-4 days. That too was a gross underestimate and clearly stated just to appease me.
I followed up with Al and Imad on several occasions thereafter to inquire about the cost, and was ignored. Finally, when I did speak to Al, he was rude and argumentative and as I did not want to have anything happen to my entire life's collection of items, I had to bow to his assertions that there would be no cost reduction, as he indicated he would attempt to seek.
After two weeks, 14 days, I still had not received my items. When I inquired as to the whereabouts, I was given the runaround and again treated rudely and accused of demanding too much. I was told that "you didn't pay for any guaranteed delivery" therefore I needed to stop "bothering" him. I was furious and informed him that I was not demanding anything, but rather relying on their representations that the items would be a certain place at a certain time.
The contract stated that the items would be at my new residence within 10-15 business days. On the 15th day I had had enough of the rudeness, deliberate misrepresentations, and outright lies. I asked where my items were, and was informed that they would be there the next day (day 16) and that due to only having 2 deliveries that day, I would have my items delivered by 8 am the next day. I and my friends, took the day off of work to be available to help me unpack. 8:00 am came and went. I called the driver to check on the status and he informed me that he was running late and would be at my residence at 12:00 pm. 12:00 pm came and went and at approximately 3:30 I called Manchester Moving, who thereafter forwarded me to the driver for a status of the move. The driver said he may not be able to deliver the items until the next day (day 17). Irate, I stated that he must deliver the items forthwith! His response was to yell profanities at me, tell me that he would put my items in storage, and hung up on me.
As a professional and a human being, the driver and this company have failed altogether. I phoned the Supervisor Imad once again and informed him of the issues with the driver and informed him that if they persisted on refusing to deliver the items to my residence, that I would contact the authorities. He informed me that he would merely "tell the driver to come back to Chicago" and refuse to deliver the items. Again, using my items as hostage, I bowed to their terms. Finally, the driver called back and said he would be at my residence at 4:30 pm. Well beyond the time indicated, after friends and I took a day off work, after the working day, at approximately 5:00 pm, the driver arrived. He was rude and making remarks under his breath regarding the move in front of me and my friends. A friend even at one point had to ask him what his problem was and why he was being so rude. In addition to all the above, the driver charged me an extra $75.00 for a "long move" even though my residence was a straight shot up one flight of stairs from the street. I gave him $80.00 and he left without giving me my change as if he expected a tip after all his rude actions and statements. In essence, he stole $5.00 from me and while that is not a lot of money, after all that Manchester and this delivery driver had put me through, he had no right taking one penny!
After ALL the issues and hardships that I endured over this move, the misrepresentations, lies, rudeness, threats to my property, and all around unprofessional conduct, there were numerous items that were broken and/or missing. The items and associated costs are as follows:
Broken crock pot - $40.00
Missing green plant stand - $30.00
Missing plastic tote filled with Christmas decorations - $200.00
Missing the base of a stand up fan - $25.00
Damaged and scratched bedroom set $250.00
Damaged stainless steel garbage can $50.00
Missing dresser knob - $10.00
Overestimation for items and move - Approximately $701.00
As I stated above, and as you have read, this has been the absolute worse experience in my life with any business in any manner. The company has been unprofessional, deceitful, rude, have violated my trust, and were unapologetic about any of the above aspects. I will be filing a grievance with the BBB and any website on which I can post my grievances as to their service. I demand full payment for my grievances listed above, or will be filing the necessary complaints with a court of law.
This was supposed to be a happy and joyous new chapter in my life, though Manchester Moving has single-handedly assured that this new chapter begin as traumatically and as harshly as humanly possible. I will make sure that Manchester Moving learns their lesson and never treats an individual as they have treated me during this already stressful time of my life. The only silver lining is that it can only get better from here.
