Surprisingly Surprised
I happened upon this site out of curiosity regarding another company. I was seeing what I would find about a company I know, namely Marcus Evans, to compare with one I was considering doing business with. I was surprised at my findings here and elsewhere. So much so, that I was propelled to write a rebuttal - of sorts. It seems the same fellow has copy and pasted his opinion all over. As we all know, some folks who are bent on anonymously bashing something as we see here have one or two reasons to do so: they believed themselves cheated, they failed, or they are an activist. Hard to say which this fellow is, but his words and vehemence have prompted me to put aside all I am doing to put some perspective on this.
I worked with Marcus Evans in 2000 to 2002 as a Summit Producer in both the Ebiz and Supply Chain sectors. (In fairness, I will note that the Conference Teams historically ran slightly different than the Summits due to the economies and scale.) In ways, those years were equally as great as they were stressful. There is NO doubt that Marcus Evans is not a results-oriented workplace. As a producer, I worked closely with my sales (vendor and delegate), marketing and event management team. The work I did was demanding, heavily researched, creative and results oriented. The programs produced were top notch -- C-level execs from Fortune 500 companies with the speakers being typically Fortune 50. For the most part, these programs were HUGELY successful by attendance with repeat customers on both the vendor (serious money) and delegates (not as much...). The website testimonies are real -- someone like myself was responsible for pulling together the end-of-event surveys where those types of things were always written by attendees. Those events took immense amount of effort, expense, and expertise to pull off. In case you were wondering, booking out a 5 star resort for 4 days with catered meals, conference space, top-notch serviced is not cheap. Not to mention 6 month production times, etc. Holding a vendor to a contract makes sense when there are only 20 or so supporting a 400+ attendee event. This is a for-profit business after-all. Truth is vendor space is limited. Yes. That is what the event value is built on.
I can get into the sales call aspect, but that should be self-explanatory by assessing the writer and what he says combined with your knowledge of sales processes. I know what it is, and that type of sale isn't for me. Plain and simple. Clearly its not for him either!
Well anyway, I've spent enough time here. I'm certain the fellow knocking the company above never attended an event and is only responding to a limited perspective of process, pressure and such. I will NEVER say that Marcus Evans is perfect. I had my issues too. Get into the nitty gritty of everything and there is always something that isn't perfect. Just look at ourselves! What I will say is that they DO stand by their events. They deliver value. Consistently. Even if you don't like the brand of gas they use.

Scam
This company is absolutely the worst place to start a career with. Please as a salesmen, that has had several years of sales experience and then made myself go through the whole "training process" to make sure I was right...DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING AFTER THE OFFER SHEET!!!
This company, Marcus Evans, or whatever they call themselves is really consisted of constant turnover of recent college graduates mixed in with some "assitant managers" who are really glorified good telemarketing salesmen. The "training process" or in Lamens terms 3 day brain washing phase is really just the "Regional Director" or "Sales Director" spewing bull #2 about a sales process that is really just a professional telemarketing ploy. They mix in "producers" and "assistant managers" which both do not make sense because a true producer does not come up with an idea on how to make a new summit plan or conference plan or etc... they actually freaking produce and manage something like a movie or a play or etc... And really, what is an "assistant manager?" All they really are "sales delegates" (please realize they never call you account executives or even junior a.e., because you really are not one) that are truly glorified because they stuck with the company, now make horrible money and basically banter on about drunken dazes or some stupid shit because they are pathetic and have no true careers.
They will tell you that the sales process, if followed, will lead you to success. Now that is bull shnoswer because if all of their testimonials which are complete crap is true? Then why are they always trying to hire new people, if they only need 30 people on their conference or which ever sector of their company they hire you at to work? Lamen terms= sales process in 3 days + you good salesman/woman+ find DM's+ sales pitch= many $$$$$$$
If so, why the high turnover rate? Are you really telling me that there are that many people who suck at sales, or is it really that even when you exceed your minimum of $12, 000 in sales/month you still are only pulling in $39, 000/ year. Now recent college grads that is when you exceed that minimum, if you do not and most do not you are closely looking at $31, 000 and that is without taxes taken out. If you can average just under $2, 600/month before taxes you are making around $16/hr... minus traveling costs, unless you walk, you are really talking about less than $30, 000 before taxes... In all, it is not worth it!!!
Really, from all the experience I had on the sales training, it is just a telemarketing job for top executives. That is all I learned from the sales training. The sales director might be very articulate and know what she is talking about but that is because she has worked with this company for years upon years. She knows what to say to you just like she knew what to say talking to "Goldman Sachs" VP's in her days of "sitting where you sat" crap talk. Just remember, those "assistant managers" make money of of you... this is one very top heavy organized pyramid scheme. Look at the promotion structure, they hire within because they already have you regimented to their company standards... the only problem with that is their company standards are unethical and just wrong!!!
Please beware!!!

Insane Company
The worst company you can ever work for, if your a fresher and looking for some quick organizational experience Marcus Evans is the place to be for a few week's.
Try to avoid joining this company as its managed by a bunch of looser, low esteemed individual's who haven't had a decent career, and don't intend to do anything with their life.

Heavy Handed Telemarketing Firm
I too received a telephone solitiation touting a conferance in Las Vegas that a unnamed competitor had just "backed out of their commitment and we can offer you a discount becuase they paid $5, 000 so the INVESTMENT is only $39, 900." Nice try but after some digging in the internet I found this site with similar stories. Due to the amount of money we would never dive in without referances from other companies in our industry but we never got that far, we see what is here and realize just another version of the Nigerian scam. Stay away if you want to save yourself a lot of aggravation.

Professional Scammers
Please beware of this company and its scum like tactics. Everything about this company is shady. From its headquarters in Bermuda (search for it on google maps and it shows up as Hickory Stick which is a restaurant) probably to evade taxes, to its employees and management. Everything is crooked. They record phone calls without telling the other side - completely illegal. They tell you to massage the truth in a formal setting but tell you to outright lie in an informal setting. Its all about creating a false image and selling that. I keep reading "its sales, its sales, " "sales is not for everyone, " complete "rubbish". This puts sales to shame. If you do some research you'll realize other companies are selling the same conferences, Marcus Evans is just selling them for a higher price - effectively their main competitive advantage is their ability to create false value and sell that. If you call that sales then you should probably work at Marcus Evans and are a good fit. And thats the kind of people who work happily at Marcus Evans. Pretentious and empty. I was quite shocked when I saw some good reviews and then I realized that all the good reviews are by people who currently work at Marcus Evans which is obviously not from an objective point of view, but even then I was surprised because when I worked there I didnt know a single person who liked their job, they were working there because they had no other option. It's like a modern day sweat shop that operates on probability. You make 12o calls per day multiply that by x number of employees which equals such and such profit. What's strange is that this is a complaint board, yet there are positive remarks. I wont be surprised if Marcus Evans paid people to write these good reviews. Then I made an observation that most of the positive reviews are by email addresses or user names such as c005644 or www3322. This is a typical Marcus Evans strategy through which they disguise themselves. You will notice those unknown number calls. Why must such a prestigious organization hide their numbers. Too shady
