I'm a student that attends New England Institute of Technology and found this apartment through their housing department. Past tenants and tenants who live here now, have complained to lanlord Mark Karnes many times throughout the years. It wasn't until recently I found out about this site, so I could do something about these complaints.
Before I write my complaints, I should explain what the house is like, so you can get a better understanding.
The house is like this. There are four levels. The basement level, where the "laundry" facility is and the basement room where I lived in the past year, and now a new tenant resides in that room. Upstairs, we have two other rooms for college tenants to occupy, a stand-up shower bathroom, a kitchen, and what seems to be a storage or study room. Then there's the fourth level, where a family of a mother, a cat, her boyfriend, I believe her sister lives there, and her son who looks to be in his pre-teens.
The fourth level tenants usually spend their time in the backyard, usually breaking glass (sometimes near the parking lot where I have my boyfriend's truck parked. This is where I have found pretty big glass shards) I've seen them take apart air conditioners and other various objects, usually breaking them. During the day, and late at night, you can hear loud music, and sometimes the bass is so loud I have trouble concentrating on homework, or sleeping for the next early-morning class. The roommate that lives on the basement level can also hear this. Also, this mostly happens at night - but you can clearly hear what the mother and boyfriend is arguing about. I hear loud banging, cursing, threats, and one time, I believe someone was pushed and hit against the wall hard enough; where it sounded like pieces of debris were falling from inside the walls. How do I know this? I was laying on my bed and it came from the wall next to me, I almost thought the ceiling was collapsing above my head.
To add to the noise complaint, they also slam the front door (which is next to my room) daily. Sometimes, during the winter, they leave the door open. Of course, it's not as big as a problem, but since the front door is next to my room, it gets quite chilly pretty quickly. Also, I'm not a fan of people leaving our door open to the public for strangers to come in as they please. Seems like an open invitation for just about anyone to come in.
Next, it is a regular thing to smell the rancid scent of weed leaking down to my room, and from what I hear from my basement roommate, she could smell it too. I should tell you why I moved out of the basement level. I moved out of the basement level because I had the mother who lives on the fourth level UNLOCK my door to get to the fusebox (that is located in my room) at 4 am, at random times. The straw that broke the camels back was when I was away for a weekend, and when I came back, I found a note on my bed saying she came in to use the fusebox while I was away. I complained to Mark about this, and apparently he talked to her about it and everything was fixed. Well, it wasn't. After I moved out to the other room, that's when the new tenant moved in to the basement level. A few months ago, the same thing happened again. Except this time, the mother broke the hinges on the basement level tenants door to get in, while she was gone.
During my school year, I have learned about the laws of Right of Entry from my business class. With this, I have found out that our own landlord has broken this rule. He has, countless of times - never warned us when he was going to come in to our apartment to show someone else a left-over room. Thing is, he only has girls that live in these rooms. He's walked in once while I was getting out of he shower, and I barely had a towel wrapped over me in time. There have also been times where he would have people come in to work on the house at random times and random days of the week and weekend, with no warning or previous notice.
I didn't explain why I had the word "laundry" in quotations. Well, our dryer has broke on occasion, and instead of fixing it - he just left it there saying that he would take it out. It's still there, broken. There have also been many times where I couldn't use the dryer or washer because there was clothes still there, from the tenants on the fourth level.
So, I believe that's it. I can also vouch and get other past tenants to back me up on these accounts, if need be.
Thank you for taking the time to read my letter.
