I went to Maryam’s Fashions in mid-September 2006 to obtain a garment suitable to wear for my son's wedding. I explained that off-the-rack clothes did not meet my needs for quality, design or fit. The proprietor, Maryam, indicated that her father Mohammed was an excellent tailor and that he would help me design a dress.


On September 24, 2006, after meeting with Mohammed and submitting my request with sample designs and a description of fabric preferences, I submitted payment in full for a Mother-of-the-Groom dress in the amount of $658.75, including tax. The first fitting was scheduled to be October 20th. I was reassured it would be ready for my son's wedding on Nov. 5.


After several delays by the tailor in arranging for the first fitting (prom season, holidays, and the like), I finally had my first fitting on Oct. 29th. The design itself was somewhat acceptable, but I'd requested the jacket be wool crepe, not brocade and the fit was particularly bad on the jacket and the skirt. I had to hold the skirt on or it would have fallen off – it was 2-3 sizes larger than it should have been, particularly since he had taken my measurements. It appeared that the entire project had been started the day before, and was nowhere near completed.


I was so shocked I was speechless. There was no time to start over as the wedding was just days away, so I thought I'd try to make do and hope the next fitting would be a significant improvement. After two more fittings, each subsequently worse than before, I gave up on the prospect of using the suit jacket and shell at all, and just wore the poorly fitted skirt out of desperation. I bought a top off the rack 2 days before the wedding. The jacket sleeves and length overall were too short, it looked like an unconstructed jacket and the sewing on the sleeves was all bunched up and wrinkled. The craftsmanship was truly inferior.
