Massage Envy Reviews

bad business practice
I received a gift card to Massage Envy for $100, I told over the phone the massage would cost $39 for one hour and $57 for an one & half hour massage. Nothing was mentioned about the balance of my card until I paid. Then I was told I could get the next $39 massage if I joined there service.

This I find to be total bs as a business.

I never went back and forwarded the difference on my gift card to the massage therapist, who are not even paid well by Massage Envy.

Would never do business with again.

Cancellation Policy
I joined the Massage Envy membership plan in 2008. I accumulated several hours of massages over the past two years. I used most of them; however, several of the hours I did not use. I decided to cancel my membership because my husband was being sent overseas and I was joining him for the first six to seven months. I explained this to the receptionist and she stated that because of deployment I could use my pre-paid massages for massages when I returned. I went in to get a massage as soon as I returned and they told me that because I canceled my membership I could not use the massages I PAID for because they canceled them. I am not asking them for a refund but I am only asking for them to allow me to use services I paid for over a two year period. There is no corporate office so there is no one other than the manager that I can speak with concerning this issue. I have left two messages for the owner but he is yet to return my call.
I want what I paid for! August 21, 2010
Honor
My complaint with Massage Envy is not their contract but the honor of their service. When I signed up I was told that if I didn't get a massage every month then they would carry over so I was not able to go do to school and work and time so I racked up 13 massages well at the end of my year I decided to cancel the membership and was told by Massage Envy that they WOULD NOT HONOR MASSAGE SESSIONS I'VE PAID FOR AFTER THE DATE WHEN MY MEMBERSHIP END AND WHERE THEY WOULD BE COLLECTING MORE MONEY FROM ME. WHAT THE HELL IS THAT IF I PAID FOR THEM THEY ARE MINE!!! SO I ASKED CAN I GIVE THEM TO FRIENDS AS GIFTS I WAS TOLD NO. WHAT KIND OF BUSINESS IS THIS!!! YOU MEAN YOU WOULD RATHER CRUSH A CUSTOMER WHO COULD GIVE A MASSAGE TO A FRIEND WHO COULD IN TURN BECOME A MEMBER AND YOU SAY NO WOW!!!

YEAH I'M PISSED LIKE I HAVE MONEY TO GIVE AWAY

Poor Working Conditions
I have been working for ME for over two years now and I'm burnt out! I make $18.75 an hour which is a $1.75 over what most therapist start out at.Doesn't matter the experience, you all start out the same. The way your recieve a raise is rediculous! This might explain to all the customers who are really angry about a crappy massage. As of current the only way you can get a raise is if you fall under four catagories which you recieve a quarter for each. 1) 3 in a row and 6 in a day 2) deep tissue/hot stone 3) Pre-natal 4) 2 hour massage. There are no incentives for a therapist to even give a descent massage!!! All they want is for you to do as many massages as you can in one day! Furthermore they won't even notify us if our customer has complained unless it is a repeated complaint. So, how are we suppose to grow into a good therapist if we don't recieve the complaints???? My manager never has given me a complaint until I complain about working there, I guess she figures that it is good ammo to stop us from complaining; not to mention this is also when she threatens us or gives us a write up. If our hands are hurting and we come in and tell our manager that we cannot do deep tissue that day, we are met with "Well, that is a modality you said you could do, sorry you will just have to limp your way through it." So, then when we try to push through the hurt it ends up giving the client a crappy massage.
We currently have four on our injured list, they want us to attend these so-called sales meetings which when I was hired on they told me that I didn't have to do any of the selling!
We had one therapist who ended up with scabies because after she told the manager that the lady had scabs on her back and ended the massage early, she was told to go back in there and finish the massage. Which costed this therapist two weeks off of work, a new bed, new linens, and numerous trips to the doctor. All of which massage envy refused to pay workmans comp because they said that there was no way it could have been from a massage.
I myself have sprained my wrist numerous times and had to work through the pain because I see what happens when the workmans comp is involved. Currently my doctor is talking about carpal tunnel surgery and I have gone through physical therapy twice for now.
The economy is sooo bad right now that I can not find another place to work otherwise I would. We therapists have no other decent option right now.
Also, I know that most massage envy's will only tell clients that they have one year memberships when in fact they have six month and three month memberships. The one in Wheaton, IL tells people that they only have two year memberships available.
When the therapists band together to complain about something the owners always tell us that it is corperate policy to do something but from talking with other therapist from other locations I have found out that all the rules are governed by the franchise owners. So this is the "owners" way out to stop us from complaining.
So, to all the customers who have had bad massages, I hope this gives you some insight to why you get a bad massage when you go there. Just remember the therapists currently have no place else to go.

false advertising
The Massage Envy Tinley Park location does not honor their own email specials. I spoke to the owner of that location and even forwarded her the email. She refused and said she would charge $10 more for the massage.

Worst cutomer service ever, hard to get out of contract, even after expired.

Account Freeze / NO REFUND Cancellation
It's the same story I have seen all over the Internet. I am not the only one by far who has had this happen. Massage Envy takes out $49.00 per month out of my checking account for each massage. If I happen to not get a massage treatment in a given month, it accumulates. Like roll-over minutes on a cell phone. I had a dozen or so after a couple years that were prepaid and I could go into Massage Envy and use it and pay only for the $15-$20 gratuity that they shamelessly put on signs for their clientelle to follow. I am one for tipping, but don't tell me what amount I need to tip. That is just rediculous. Anyway, after a while, with the economy and all, my business wasn't doing well at all and I had to cut back on a lot of things. I asked them what I could do to get reimbursed for the massage treatments that I haven't used. They said that the only thing I could do was to put my account on hold, so that more auto-withdrawals wouldn't come out for 6 months. However, after that six months, the auto-withdrawals would resume. I told them that I didn't forsee my financial situation being any better in 6 months, and I would just like to cancel my membership and get the money back for the massage treatments that I had not used. Nope... That was not possible. "That is not our corporate policy." I was always told. So, I just decided to put my membership on hold as directed and wait to see if in 6 months I could begin reusing my prepaid massages. Basically I have repeated this process 3 or 4 times with them and they tell me everytime the same thing. If I cancel I lose everything. Stupid me, I kept putting it on hold to see if I would be in better financial situation later, but my financial situation hasn't gotten any better. Each time they would begin taking the $49 out again, I would usually get a few overdraft fees to the tune of $35.00 each also. It has become a nightmare because I am TRAPPED into this thing that is worse than a credit card with high interest. The way they have this scam set up makes it so that people using their service can never cancel their membership and get all the money that Massage Envy has auto-withdrawaled from people's bank accounts. Unless we want to just cut out losses, but that is rediculous and a SCAM. After years now, I have 30 massage treatments credited to me that I have prepaid for by way of their auto-debits that yes I signed up for, but could no longer afford to keep doing because my budget couldn't even afford the tip to give the therapists. I called the Better Business Bureau and have submitted a formal complaint. Massage Envy responded by saying they would give me 4...FOUR!!! gift certificates for $39.00 that i could use. WHAT ??? I told them they were going to have a law suit on their hands if they didn't give me back my $1, 470 that they still have withdrawed from my checking account that I haven't redeemed. I still haven't heard anything yet, so who knows what I am going to do. Plus, I could really use my money back at the moment with this economy. I don't know what to do next. I hope the Better Business Bureau can do more than just but a bad report on them. I really hope I am not going to lose almost $1500 in this deal. It is my money. I have not received services for it because I cannot afford to go in. I suppose I could go in and get massages and not tip the therapists... I could use my massages and each time stiff the massage therapists and not give them a tip. But I can't do that. it's a moral thing with me. I have worked in the service industry before as a massage therapist myself and as a server and as a valet and bellman. I just couldn't in good conscience stiff the therapists. They work hard and deserve a gratuity. I just wish corporate Massage Envy would take that policy away. It is really a terrible and almost unlawful policy. So many others have had this same experience, including them showing up for a massage and having prepaid massage credits and Massage Envy won't let them get a massage until they give them a new credit / debit card if the one they have on file has expired. Even if the person has credits for massages built up. They won't let the person use their credited massages until they submit a new account number that they can auto-debit. These people are criminals in my opinion. SCAM.

Deceptive Way to Join Membership
PLEASE FORWARD TO YOUR CORPORATE OFFICES AT MASSAGE ENVY. attn: David Humphrey!

This is Richard Atkins. I had a 2 o'clock appointment today for a massage with Samantha, which, I might add went very well. However, when I was trying to enjoy the "Zen experience" of that after-the-massage feeling, I was hit with a marketing plan that caught me off guard.

The first point is this:

1. Don't hit first time customers with a marketing campaign to take their hard earned money. Especially when they have just received a massage and are trying to enjoy the after effects of a good massage. Or maybe, that is the Massage Envy plan, "get'im while they're mind's not on the marketing pitch!"
2. Secondly, the pitch is confusing, and maybe again, it is meant to be confusing. You say "we'll waive the membership if you join right now." Well, to me, membership means for the whole year, not a monthly fee of $49. That's part of the deception in the marketing pitch. And, $49 is pretty darn high in this economy. You can join a fitness club for $10 a month!
3. Then you're made to believe that for $49, you're entitled to a free massage every month. That's yet another deception in the marketing plan. You pay $49 and get the privilege of paying another $39 for your massage, so you're not out-of-pocket close to $90 bucks?! I can get a massage every month for less than that without paying a $49 monthly membership, or monthly fee.
4. I do live farther than 25 miles away as I live in the East Mountains, so it is not convenient in the least to come to you, and, I'm permanently disabled from an elevator accident which severely injured my back and knee, so I can certainly get a note from my doctor cancelling this membership, but I'd rather not go through that inconvenience and have you cancel my membership right now.
5. What you have done is sour me on Massage Envy, which means I won't be a customer again and I will let everyone know not to frequent your business, so what you have done by tricking me into joining this bogus membership is lost more business than you think you have gained.

My membership was accepted by Alicia H.

6. I came in to get a massage and relax, and left feeling ripped off and taken advantage of. What that the objective of your deceptive marketing pitch?

Please call me at your earliest convenience so we can take care of this immediately.

Thank you.

Business mal practice
Please stay away from these frauds.

They lure you into their contracts with false information saying. It will cost you $78 without contract but $39 with contract. What they don't tell you is you have to pay monthly membership charge of $20 which makes it $59 not $39. By the time you know this you must have signed the contract. When you ask them about it any additional massages in the month will cost you $39(nice).

Hassles to get out of the contract:

Get a doc certificate to get out the contract. What kind of sane person will sign the contract if he knows that he has to get a doc certificate to get out of the contract. But they withheld this information to get you sign the contract. The second is move away 25 miles from you current address ( wow so I have to move away to get out of your contract).

When I insisted that I do not like their service and to get me out of their contract they said to get it from other towns. This is real hypocrisy they say they take you out of their contracts when you move away 25 miles but they want you to go other towns to get service in case you don't like service in this town - Great.

Final touch - Their contracts are auto renewed. Incase you are not careful - you are stuck for another cycle.

Please raise your voice against them.

CORRUPT BUSINESS
I had a membership at massage envy for my neck problems. I got a membership in hopes of relief. A few months of massages that did absolutely nothing to help I sought out a REAL medical doctor who said I have a pinched nerve and hyperextended neck. I brought the doctor note and was cancelled for free. I then notice strange amounts of money missing in my account followed by a call from them about a massage. THEY CHARGED ME FOR 3 MONTHS AFTER I CANCELLED. even thought their policy states that a doctors note you will not be charged again. They are "looking into it" and I had to call my lawyer and bank to dispute it.

Massage Envy is owned and run by some of the most corrupt people in the world. NEVER NEVER NEVER go there!!!
