refrigerator section stopped cooling
We purchased a Maytag bottom-freezer-drawer fridge #MBL2256KES5 a little over a year ago online from HomeDepot.com for $1300 plus taxes. The top part stopped cooling 26 days past the one-year warranty date. After waiting on hold for 30 minutes, I was simply told there was "nothing we can do."
Really? This is the best they can do? Yes, it is. They did offer to schedule a repair - with what must be a very-very-very-busy Maytag repairman, not the "lonely" one you may have seen on their ads. I declined.
Now that I'm reading various websites, I see our scenario is actually better than average, with most having all sorts of problems with their Maytag appliance during the one-year warranty period. (We didn't buy the extended warranty since consumers' advocate groups consistently recommend against it.) Shame on us for not paying attention to these published horror stories BEFORE we bought. We will never, ever consider buying a Maytag appliance again and will discourage everyone we know from doing so.
Paying $1300 for an appliance should get you at least five years down the road before you start feeding the meter.

Gas Oven Failed
I purchased a Maytag gas stove model #MGR5751BDS in July of 2008. This product failed right out of the box. First the oven clock stopped working, then the burners had trouble, then the oven started cooking at random temperatures, finally it failed completely. I have called Maytag numerous times and have had a number of service calls (each service call meant two visits by A&E: one to assess the problem, two when the parts arrived to install them). I have missed countless hours of work, spent numerous hours on the phone with Maytag arguing with them that the stove is simply a lemon. Finally, they agree to replace the darn thing (which I didn't want another Maytag, but can't afford another new stove with this one only being 6 months old and they refuse to return the money for it) on December 19, 2008. I keep calling after that to confirm when the new stove will arrive, only to be told today, January 5, 2009, that it was incorrectly ordered but will be ordered today. My guess is that it still hasn't been ordered, and I will keep being put off.
