I got a pop-up by Vance Games ( I now know they are a scam web site and got them off my computer--they got on my computer when I played an Internet game), which read I would recieve a free prize if I took a short survey, so I did and my prize was a free disaster kit for $1 plus postage of $3.99 and it showed a photo of the kit supplies plus a long list of things that would be in it and it looked very good--such things as a large thermal blanket to keep warm in if caught in the cold--a first aid kit to have if injured, a battery-radio for information, etc., so I thought it was a good thing to have in my car because I live inthe mountains and get stranded on the roads sometimes when it snows. I gave my Visa no for the $4.99 charge--$1 plus postage of $3.99. The kit arrived in a small 5 in by 7 in box. The box was so light, it could not have cost the $3.99 for postage. No thermal blanket--the first aid kit was a small box with 10 bandaids--the plastic radio was the size of a cigerate lighter ( no battery and didn't work when I put in a battery--the rest of the things were cheap plastic junk ( had nothing to do with a disaster)-like 5 whistles--5 cheap toothbrushes--5 disposable razors, etc. A letter inside thanked me for opening an account and hoped I would buy products in the future. No address, no E-mail, no mail address, no phone numbers--no way to contact them about getting a package that did not have what had been advertised. The package stated--do not return to sender. I was surprised when a $95 charge was posted to my credit card by MDC*dolcefragrance 866-2295378 CA for retail sale. I called that no and the girl answered Disaster Kit. She told me I had recieved an E-mail stating I had signed up for an account and got angry with me when I said I hadn't--and then she said she would cancel my account and I would recieve an E-mail with instructions on how to get a refund. The e-mail never came, so I called my credit card company and had my account no. changed and reported fraud. I have yet to hear from my credit card company who was supposed to send me a new card and fraud form to fill out--so don't know if I will end up paying the $95, but at least they can not charge anymore charges to my account. When I went online to check complaints against free disaster kit I did read where one person finally got far enough with the company to get a refund of $60--the company kept $40 for re-stocking fees--apparently that person had to send the kit back to them and bet they had to pay the postage to send it back.
Anyway--it is certain nothing is free except an Internet scam.
