Magazine scam
Similar to othr scams noted online, two young men came to my door soliciting for a "soccer championship" tournament they wanted to attend and selling magazines to fund it. At first they sounded legitimate, saying they were from the next neighborhood over. They stepped inside my door and next thing I knew, they were moving into the house to a table. The one young man spoke fast, and seemed to making up more and more lies as he went. He said his father was in Iraq, his mother had been in the military, he had trained at Camp Pendleton, etc. He really stressed the support the troops philosophy. I didn't want any magazines so he said I could order them to be sent to troops, both for men and for women. This sounded ok, so I agreed. I had these two 20 something young men on each side of me and felt very uncomfortable during this part of their pitch. The one young man filled out forms without me seeing them. He said, "do you know what a 501C is?" and when I said yes, he said most people don't. After all his rattling he told me to make two checks out for over $200 each. This amount sounded too large, but he insisted that's what he needed. I asked for a receipt and he said it would be mailed in several days. I asked their names and they would only give me first names. By this time I was anxious for them to leave my home and wrote the checks. They left and I went to the bank the next day, explained my concern, and they put stop payments on the checks. I also found out later that the leader of this group was issued a ticket for soliciting without a license, but told the police that that took too long and they made too much money from this area.
