I just about 15 minutes ago fell for the same scam. I didn't believe it was a scam at first but after writing out my $87.00 check for a year subscription for MAXIM, I had a slight odd feeling about it so I decided to google it and before I could even type in the full Midwest Clearing... there it automatically came up as Midwest Clearing, INC.
This is what happened, I'm sitting watching T.V. and our front big windows does not have drapes. So I'm assuming they saw me sitting watching T.V. because they rang the door bell TWICE. Also to mention, I've been downstairs all morning and this was around 3:00PM. And I do remember hearing the doorbell this morning about twice also and my father had answered the door and he must've said no so once they saw me available upstairs. They decided to try me. I open the door and two young african american ladies, one was 24 and one was 20. The 24 yr old was the one that started to introduce herself saying she is going door to door to earn points and NO DONATION she kept mentioning. So I decided to listen.. she starts of a presentation of how they're motive is to earn points in order to get a job at where they live (Dallas, TX).. to get away from bad environment and such or "bad friends". She was a mother of 2, she even showed me pictures because she had seen my 2 1/2 yr old .. so she did mention she was a single mother.. And if she did achieve her points, she'd become a mentor to other youths about having a good head on shoulders. Asked me what's my advice and motive and etc. So I was pretty convinced. Her list of buyers and comments and points was about 3 pages long, that also helped convinced me.
Then I started to look into the magazines.. I had a choice to subscribe for myself or to donate to youths at other communties.. So then I decided on one magazine for a year, she did ask me twice if I didn't want another because it'd get her points along with commision and my choice of magazine only gave her commission. I then told her that's all I could afford just to help her out because I was up for their motive in life. So she asks me to fill out the receipt and my total is now all of a sudden $87.00 even though she mentioned a year subscription for Maxim would of been only $50. something.. and on the receipt there was a non refundable $15.00 that she didn't even mention and I had to ask. So I write out a check for $87.00 and then they also ask if i had anything to give them as a beverage for their door to door trip. Yet, I'm still trying to help so I grab 2 cans of pop for them.
They go on their way and I feel really funny and that's $80 something dollars that I could of spent something on my kids.. So I decided to google and this is what I found.. Many complaints and I'm writing this to also share what happen to me so when you find these people at your door.. DON'T FALL FOR IT!!!.. Now I gotta figure out what to do.. 1) Send in the cancellation slip but it has to reach them within 3 days and I don't know if that's a scam too or if i'll even get my money back 2) I'll have to call into my back and cancel my check.. thank God I didn't give them cash!!
P.S. I went on their website also and I saw a picture of MAXIM magazine and it's definitely NOT the Maxim u find in the stores.. It was a Maxim and on the cover was Homer Simpson's Wife I forget her name scrubbing the floor! What the hell!
