Hiring/Pay
When getting a call from Miejers regarding a application I submitted online at first I thought this may be a great and new possbility for a career change. The manager requested a phone interview when calling, gave information regarding the current hiring practices of the new store opening and that all employees were bieng hired in at Part Time only and every position was at minimum wage to start. Would that be a problem? Well not if it is just a temporary thing to get your foot in the door and there is a pathway for career advancement and pay increases. So I agreed to a second interview scheduled for the following day at the not yet open store. I got there about 8 min before my 9am appt. The greeter radios to a manager my arrival and several minutes later she comes to notify me that the manager had to go over to the newly opened gas station and that she will be back shortly Okay... After about 20 min a staff member walks over to that greeter and has a short conversation than continues walking my way but stops to talk to another employee, casually... then walks up to me and introduces herself as the manager that is going to do my interview. After now a phone interview, person face to face with team manager, and now asked to wait and have a third final interview with the store director I initially thought this was going to be a promising thing. I am a pestimistic personality by instinct but tried hard to supress my gut instincts of this whole process. The top out for a cashier is apparently 12.10 hr and they don't tell you how long it will take to reach that but I did graduate with a Associates Degree and can do basic math. The store director performs a interview that is much more detailed than what would be expected for a minimum entry level position but okay maybe just a way to set and try to reach high standards which I was impressed by initially. At the end of the interview there are now 4 other people waiting for a interview and he did not offer a job on the spot but said he would be gathering with the team and would reach a decision no later than the following Monday. So not sure at this point if I sucessfully passed a interview to be offered a minimum wage part time position. But after doing a little research on the internet I find the bigger picture of the unionized way they do business and the popular thing of hiring at minimum wage with the ability to not even getting up to $10 hr after 2 years of employment with excellent job performance. Maybe if you play your cards right you could land a non union management position for not very likely as they seem to hire these positions from outside the company with job head hunters. So I calculate up my potential earning ability at $7.40 times lets say a max of 40hrs a week and this is under $300 gross. They take out $2 a pay period to cover the expense of a required work shirt and yes I would think you need 2-3 and she didn't say at what cost each were. Provide your own pants which must be Kachki colored- 1-2 pairs and white tenis shoes that can handle allowing you to stand on concrete for 8 hrs. I know for a quality pair your looking at $50 easy. And then to have a locker to put your coat and belongings in they charge you a locker fee. Oh and we didn't discuss how much a week union dues are but having been employed by a union job before I know it is usally 1.5 of your normal hr rate. The manager siad this is a weekly due taken out of the check. Most places it is only one time a month. The whole long story... While they are paying salaried positions up in the ball park of 90 thousand a year plus bonuses to a store director who merely is just a puppet for the company everyone else that is hourly wage earners make minimum wage and are not even elegible for Full Time to allow for family medical coverage. But it is bragged about that as part time you can participate to a medical plan that will cover basics for you the employee only. She didn't say how much that was a week but stated the dental and vision is around $4 per pay period each. Obviously she was on a different benefit package bieng management but should have at least been able to rattle off accurate information for the positions she was interviewing potential new hires for. So I didn't need to use a calculator to figure out that I could not afford to work for this new company with gas prices and cost of daycare to be able to even work a shift. My first shift would not even cover the costs I need to incur to buy uniforms and shoes. The experience made me much more depressed about our economical crisis we have been suffering the last 2 years and I don't see it getting better anytime soon.
