We received a call from Monsters Resort Group advertising a great deal on a 2 bedroom oceanfront condo at Myrtle Beach. During my initial conversation with Melanie (one of the sales associates), A beautiful 2 bedroom condo located in the tower of this property was described. At that time it was oceanfront and offered at a great price. I was told that all I had to do was attend a 90 minute presentation. I was skeptical, and wanted to first research the property on the internet. The property had several buildings, most of which I would not be interested in for my family. However, the tower building on this property looked to be decent and so I agreed to make my arrangements with the group. When I spoke with the sales associate again, I was told that the condo was not oceanfront but ocean view. I let her know that I was disappointed with this new information, but was fine with it as long as it was still located in the tower. She said yes and that the view was somewhat oceanfront/ ocean view because of the unique way that the rooms were configured in the tower. I completed the transaction and then spoke to her boss who was more candid about the fact that the room was really what they called a moderate ocean view. Again, I was fine as long as it was in the tower. I was assured that it was located in the tower but was not a complete ocean view. Once I got there, I checked in at the Monster Resort Group center as instructed and proceeded to the resort to get my room and to check-in there. When I received my room number, I noticed that it was not in the tower at all and was instructed by the very kind staff at the resort to take that issue up with Monster Resort Group. I was becoming upset because this was not the room I was promised, but decided to check it out to give it a chance. Well semantically one could say that it was a "moderate" ocean view room if you are stretching it. That was the only thing that was found to be somewhat true. The condo was old with dirty carpet, and not appropriate for my family. To say the least, the atmosphere was not family friendly at all. This building was simply not suitable for my family and it was nothing close to what was described to me on the phone.
I was so upset, I drove back to Monster Resort Group and demanded my money be refunded or some other accommodations be made. I was told that they did have another oceanfront 2 bedroom available at another property and so I agreed to give them a second chance. After waiting for 10-15 minutes the offer for this resort was recanted. So now after driving for hours with a two year old, I did not have a safe, clean, place to stay for the night. I left with basically the word from Mark that my money would be refunded.
I do want to say that the group did refund my money in a timely manner as verbally promised. That was the one redeeming quality of this "vacation" group. Additionally, I did not want to mention the name of the resort in my complaint because the people at the actual resort were very kind and understanding and I do feel that certain rooms at the resort are probably fine and appropriate for some.
I was able to find another resort on my own because I had the resources to do so. Many families would not have been able to do that and would have had to go all the way back home. My hope is not to simply slam Monster Resort Group, but to alert them to the fact that they do not need to sell their vacations by misrepresenting accommodations to customers (bait and switch). This is simply bad business when your are dealing with someone's vacation and it does not make for very open-minded people to attend the presentation. The sad part is that we were somewhat wanting to buy property at Myrtle Beach and would have been a great audience. Again I am not completely discouraging people from engaging in such a deal with this group, but make sure you know exactly what you are getting for your money!
