Mountain Area Communications Reviews

Jacob May 24, 2011
$500 shopping Fraud
I was called in the late afternoon one day by a company calling themselves 'Mountain Area Communications'. I was in a good mood at the time which left me vulnerable to their scheme. They claimed themselves to be a company associated with my credit card company and that I won a $500 credit to my account for having good credit. I like to think of myself as being a responsible spender, so this reasoning held water for me. Then they popped the question. My credit card number? Why would they need that? Since they're associated with my credit card company, they should already have the information, no? Well apparently that isn't the case. Yet still I refused to give it to them. But then they shot me a deceptive lie. I was told that if even they were to obtain my credit card number, they wouldn't be able to charge it without my card's security number. That made sense at the time, since why would it be there if not for that purpose? My ignorance of the truth was my downfall. I gave them my number for 'confirmation' purposes, and they proceeded to bring me into a completely unrelated deal that comes with the $500 prize. They said I would be receiving some number of magazine subscriptions for free, but that I only need to pay shipping. At the moment I was thinking, 'I don't ever read magazines in the first place. I just want the prize and to go on with my day.' So I requested that the magazines not be sent. Then almost immediately, in the kindest tone imaginable the lady asked if it was too much for me. I agreed and she suggested a slightly smaller package. In the midst of this conversation I had lost sight of the entire reason I was even interested in this call in ght first place. If I had won $500, shouldn' that be the end of it? But no, in an effort to speed up the call, I accepted the smaller package. She proceeded to transfer me over to her supervisor, where I was asked to answer some questions while she recorded my voice. I was told to recite the amount I am agreeing to pay. Which involved the lump sum of all the shipping costs combined over a certain course of time. Which added up to a large sum money somehow. I didn't keep the numbers in mind, I just wanted my hard earned $500. After the call ended, I had a bad feeling. I searched up their company name, and found that many people have been ripped off by these people. I proceeded to cancel my credit card immediately and requested that the charge they made to the card be refuted as well. My credit card company was very helpful, but couldn't remove the pending charge and suggested that I call them back and have them cancel it. I attempted to do so, to which they responded that they couldn't cancel anything until it was posted to my card. Well, some time passed. My old credit card got charged roughly $40. Some time after that charge, they started calling me again, requesting that I pay them $192.00 or so. I haven't even received the magazines yet, but they pointed out an obviously underhanded loophole that says that the delivery will take over a month or more to reach me. I will admit, it was unwise of me to be so gullible. But this kind of business is just not ethical. It's like telling someone that they won a new motorcycle, and then sneak in that it'll only cost your car. Except way less obvious, and ten times more deceptive. I don't know what they tell you at Mountain Area Communications, but this is not an honest way to make money. Period.

MISINFORMATION/CANCELLATION
When I was being asked if I wanted to sign up I specifically asked the care rep and the supervisor I spoke to if I could cancel at any time due to I did not want to be locked into anything for 60 months knowing things could change (finances, job) and they told me they could not tell me I could not cancel but they prefer I didn't. Then when I called today due to my car broke down and now I must buy a new one and I list my wallet so I had to stop all my cards and accts and told them I wanted to cancel the sup Cindy told me I cannot cancel but only change the magazines but this is not what I was told and I am mad as hell because I cannot afford to pay for this magazine subscription anymore.

Horrible people and service is a rip off
"Our 1st Priority Start an account! Cancel an account! Change an account!
Our number one priority is to satisfy you! We try to pay close attention to the quality of our service and satisfaction of are customers. If you our unsatisfied with any service we our providing just give us a call and we'll be more than happy to correct any problem, we will do our best to make sure you get all you have asked for and all you expect" REALLY for one sure they loved to start your account with them, but when hell freezes over will they cancel your account! weither or not you called within their time period of canceling and leave them a message because you can't get ahold of them. OH but they sure do record you agreeing to this and that, but do they listen to any recorded messages? Thats a good question! And they give two shits about how satified you are with their service! Now i should say there may be a slim few nice people in the company, please let them out of the dungon I have never talked to one nice person from that company except the day i started an account. After that not a single nice person to talk to, or that truly cared about how you feel or what your needs are! Not once have I been treated so badly by a company EXCEPT MOUNTAIN AREA COMMUNICATIONS! Weither or not they provide cheap magazines, they shouldnt beable to be in business and talk to people (customers) the way they do.

Targeting college students fraudulently
Our son started college in September. Shortly after, he received a voicemail on his cell phone saying he had won $1000 worth of free prizes. I have no clue how they got his cell #. He ignored thr first message, then received 2 more. Out of curiosity, he called back. They said he had won the prizes, and needed to provide his credit card # and SS # for verification purposes. He naively did. Next day he told us what he had done. I called the # he had, and told them in no uncertain terms that this deal was cancelled. Ma. has a three day right of recission law, and after I informed the woman of this she agreed to cancel the deal. I then had my son inform his bank of what had happened, and had them issue a new account number. They were never able to access his account thankfully. That was in October, today we received a statement, including a late fee, from them. we called and were informed by a woman named Jaqueline, that the deal could either be paid in full for $800 0r a $300 cancellation fee! I am informing the Ma. Attorney General's Office of Consumer Affairs in the morning. These vultures are preying on young, naive college students. This practice is clearly predatory and must be illegal...

Cancellation
Well I am not here to write a complaint because I too just like everyone else here was suckered into this scam. The story is all the same as everyone else so I won't bore you with it, but I will provide my end result, i.e. what I did to slove this. First off, I found that yes it is legal to do all this and by agreeing to the sale you legally have agreed that part is legit. I looked all this up so saying that a person will go to a lawyer is a waste of time. Now my story is that these people in reality a company of 3 people kept calling and herassing me for months and threatening to go to a collection agency and garnish my wages. This practice is illegal. Now I am no true legal expert but I did however contact the Better Bussiness Beaurea or BBB and write a complaint against the company for this and decribed my situtation using their website. I can't say for sure what they did or said but whatever it was the company droped the case and closed my account sloving my problem. I did not ask for the original 49.90 they took only for them to stop harrassing me. I will tell everyone that reads this I did read every single complaint on every website to find this out and even read all the info the BBB had on the company which has recieved an F rating for their practices. So I would ask if anyone feels the need to write a complaint after this one then please include that this problem was sloved by contacting the BBB, before this information gets lost behind more complaints and those that are not as willing to research as much as I did, or read all the complaints to find out who to ask for help that they at least know about the BBB and how they may help.

scam
I was scammed by these people through an unsolicited phone call and they said I had been chosen to receive a $1000 shopping spree sponsored by VISA. Long story short I had to close my debit card account. Now they are harassing me and saying they are going to turn me into all 3 credit bureaus for default on a $750 loan. Please hang up if MOUNTAIN AREA COMMUNICATIONS calls you. I know of no other recourse than to file a complain against them.

Fraud
Please please please do not fall for their scam. Do NOT allow them to bill you. If you are charged against your will, PLEASE contact the Federal Trade Commission and report to them your problems. If fraud is perpetrated across state lines, it is a federal CRIME, but if you do not complain, nothing will happen, and they will find more victims. https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/

Hey there,
I these people ever try to get you signed up for anything DO NOT Sign up for magazines!
It seems to be a great deal but after you say yes and the start charging you, There is no customer service!
They are as rude as they can be to you! If you have a problem and call them to tell about it not oly they won't even listen to you but also put you on hold while you are talking!
In addition we made two payments to this company and NEVER EVER received anything from them.So we stopped making payments.
Tried call them a few times nobody answered or get back with us.
All they do is sending Bills.
Plus, They didint even get magazines right!
The last bill that they sent stated the wrong magazines that we didint want at the first place and changed from the very beggining!
Now that i cant get a hold of hem by phone i replied by mail to theri bills saying that i woll not make any payments untill i receive my magazines that i already had paid for!!
We'll see what happens net.

Fraud. Nothing Sent. Overcharged
My son received a call from these folks. Totally scammed him. Got his card for 'identification' purposes to get his 'free' shopping spree. They said he could also get magazines if he wanted. He never told them he wanted magazines. They are now trying to get him to pay via a collection agency. He never received his shopping spree, magazines or ANY kind of services. We can not figure out what it is they are trying to collect for. If everyone would file a complaint to the FTC instead of just venting here it would be soooo much more useful in the battle to get these scammers shut down. https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/ Go here and file a real complaint that might have some teeth.
