Ripping off mentally challenged KIDS...
WOW! when I got on this site - I am amazed just how bad this company is to others as well as us.. Here is our complaint/story:

My Nephew (18 years old) happened to answer the phone one day when someone from Mountain called. They started the conversation off with you have WON a $1000.00 shopping spree. He was sooooooo excited!!! Then they proceeded to tell him he would receive something like 8 magazines per month but he had to give his bank card #. So he did it!!! What you need to know about my nephew is that he is mentally handicapped with OCD, ADD, Asbergers. We were so afraid for him and his bank account! We took this complaint to our bank and they called Moutain along with us to explain his mental challenges and that he is in no way capabile of making adult decisions about money but they didn't care... they continued to say - "we recorded our conversation of him agreeing that he is 18 years of age and he agreed so sorry but we will not cancel" We then went to our local DA's office - they advised that Moutain legally has to have a 30 day cancel policy - when calling Moutain back with DA's information they said - "we have no cancel policy, we are a prepaid magazine sales company and we don't have to have a cancel policy in effect. We will not cancel this subscription. These people would only cooperate with us if we faxed them a letter on his Dr. letterhead stating his mental handicap! Which we did today.

Just telling everyone so you can beware!!! This company is scamming innocent people..

Select Your Gifts
Okay so I got a call from Mountain Area Communications congratulating me on my $1000 online shopping spree! woo! i figured it was a scam so on the phone with them.. I was like look, I'm 18 years old (was at the time) and I've been busting my ass trying to survive in the real world as an adult, is this going to fuck me over bascially? and they were like ohh nooo! its a great deal Ashley! so stupid me was all like Okay well then sign me up, thinking that they were understanding professional adults. So i signed up for this 3 magazines a month for like $20 or whatever. No biggie right? well wrong! they kept screwing up on my magazine order and sending me random magazines that I didn't wanna pay for, AND the select your gifts site was just ridiculous! there wasn't a single thing on there that could be put to use. They said there would be furniture and all this good stuff, i was thinking i'd finally be able to buy my own things like dishes, towels, etc etc. So i call them up right, telling them that i dont wanna do it anymore and i'm losing money, my bank account was negative and i just couldn't afford it, well what they didn't tell me on the phone was that there is a $300 cancelation fee!!!.. ya i know right! luckily for me, i got a new debit card with all new numbers.. and the MAC place has been calling me several times a day (i'm assuming because my other card is disabled)... i've just been ignoring their calls and trying to avoid them... Is this illegal of me? Like... i won't go to jail or anything will i?

THE LADY DID SAY THAT THERE WAS A SMALL SHIPPING AND HANDLING FEE BUT THEY TRY TO WRAP YOU UP WITH THE WHOLE $1000.00 SINCE THEY NOW PEOPLE NEED MONEY RIGHT NOW. THEY SHOULD BE SHUT DOWN FOR SWCAMMING PEOPLE LIKE THEY DO. PLEASE DON'T FALL FOR ALL THIS BULL! THE INTERNET IS VERY HELPFUL ON THINGS LIKE THIS. JUST WANTED TO WARN THOSE OF YOU WHO GET CALLED. What a bunch of BS
They got me after I had just been off work from a 12 hour day getting ready for a store inventory count the next day. I of coarse got charged the very next day for 49.00, though it was supposed to be a hold. After a few monthes of trying to contact them here and there to cancel the account, cause you can never get ahold of anyone, I finally did. A supervisor or owner or what have you gets on the line and tells me sir, if they said you could cancel the account, then they where lieing and they would be fired for it, I said well, looks like you have some training todo on your end, have a nice day cancel my account. Of coarse they said no, so I got on the phone with my bank right after the call and canceled my card so they could not debit out anything else from me. Few monthes later, after not answering there calls, I get a call on my house line, hmm how nice. But this time is from some Mirand Response lady saying how she aggrees that I should not be having to pay and that they did me wrong, but I could resolve all of this if I paid them 120.00 for the next few monthes, since she could cut my total due in half. Or if i wanted to be done with it completely and not get any other magizines and such, that I could simply pay them 480.00 and it would be resolved. Supposedly she did not work for Mountain Area, though in the back ground I heard a lady answering the phone prolly in the next little cubical saying, Thanks for calling Mountain Area Magizine, haha. Now I heard the recording, and yeah it sounded like me, so I can not dispute the fact they got me when I was gulliable I suppose, but when I started stating the fact to this Daniel chick at Mirand Response( AKA Mountain Area Communications) she started getting all offensive, and sure I did have a little more loudness to my voice by this time, told her that I would not be paying and then she said, well you will pay in time, you will be hearing from our Lawyers. So guess its time to get a laywer myself, as I would rather pay them the 2k then pay that scam of a company another dime. Its sad to see all these others that have been duked by these people, but is nice to see that I was not the only one. So, looks like my next adventure begins. Oh did some looking on this Mirand company, they are a collections agency based out of Jamica or something like that. Looks like they hired some thugs to try to get there cash. Well, will keep you all posted on my little adventure against a scam bs company. Could think of other things I could be doing at this time I tell ya.

Threats and Scams
I received a call about a company that claimed to be affilliated with Visa. They said as a valued customer I could receive 14.95 a month for a magazine subscrpitions and free gifts and shopping sprees. I gave them my debit card info under the understanding that I would have 14.95 taken away every month I wanted magazines starting in 3 weeks. Well, they charged me THAT same day instead of 3 weeks as we agreed. So that put me with overdraft fees, and I called my bank to make a fraud report. They said they experienced similar calls to mine on Mountain Area Communications.
I tried to call them and their phone numbers were disconnected and busy. I was angry so I canceled my debit card account feeling that if they'd already made one unauthorized charge against me, they'd probably do more.
Then after that since I couldn't reach them I waited for my free gifts. Unfortunately for me, the 'gifts' and magazine subscrpitons were actually NOT free. You still have to pay for the gifts you just don't pay full price! I was angry about them charging me without my permission and about the scam in general.
Then a woman from the company finally called me and said that I'm going to have to pay either $700 to cancel their 'services' or else they were taking me to collections. I was very upset and I told them that I thought this was a scam and it's also not right because I had no agreement for what they were doing and I"d never signed anything. They claimed I had a verbal agreement with them, however, I don't not believe this because I actually never authorized them to take 39.99 a month from me.
In addition I received a letter from them shortly before they finally called me, it stated it would cost 5.99 to cancel on the letter if I no longer wanted their services, I have the letter right now. However on the phone it was different story. I know this is a scam and these people are trying to use unfair practices to collect a non existent debt.

Fraud
I am a victim of this mountain area communications fraud. I received a call from a lady named Brandy, who left me a voicemail about me being selected to win a $1, 000 shopping spree. Like many others, I too was sweet talked into agreeing to accept the $1, 000 shopping spree and cunned into getting 5 free magazines which is when they told me that I wouldnt have to pay for anything until 7 days later. Well my dad looked at the accounts later and saw that there was a total of $54.85 withdrawn out of my account. But when i talked to them they told me they only needed my number for verification that my card was valid. I was also told about the United Benefit Advantage, 'discount company' and that i could get a 30 day free trial. I dont know what all to do besides call them back and cancel it or try to sue them for fraud. I need help and dont know what else to do, any ideas?
