I used Servicemagic to find a cleaning company for my oriental rugs, believing that they were a reputable filter for reliable professional service professionals in my area. I received only one call right away. I thought more would call. The man Paul Benhamou came, flattered me that I had valuable rugs and proceeded to quote me approximately 600.00 to clean 3 small rugs, around 70 square feet in total. When I balked at the price he offered an all-cash deal at 450.00 which I foolishly took and signed a contract. That came out to around 6.00 plus per square foot without special services tagged on like Scotchguard. Then I contacted a quality carpet store on 5th Avenue in Manhattan and asked what they would charge for cleaning, they said around 3.00. Ok there's pick up delivery and probably some extra charges so let's say 4.00. Then I spoke with a acquaintance of my mother's who appraises rugs who said that 3.50 was the top price.
The rugs came back they were clean but not even wrapped in paper on a rainy day. This was a case of ripoff overcharging by CarpetMagic, whoever they are. They have no address on their contract, since supposedly they are getting new forms. I will never use ServiceMagic again. Clearly they do no serious vetting of the practices of their suppliers. They are useless. They are in Colorado - what do they know about NYC?
