Fraud / Deception / Poor Customer Service
I too have been charged the "pending items" overdraft charge that has been mentioned by others on this website. In addition, I make frequent deposits from employee for business reimbursement checks I receive. I usually receive at least one or two a week. I had been banking with St Francis Bank (8 years) that became MidAmerica Bank and now National City. I never had any problems when they were St Francis Bank. One day, I come to the bank to find out my account was suspending pending an internal investigation for FRAUD!!! I said why? They would not tell me anything other than I had to call their fraud department. Come to find out the frequent deposits from my employee flagged an internal money laundering fraud system. They threatened to close my account completely unless I provided proof of employee reimbursements! I got a letter from my employer and then 4 days later my account was reactivated. While my account was locked any checks that had been written were returned. I had plenty of funds available to cover them, but because of the investigation they could not let any checks go through. The best part is after they agreed to restore my account after I provided requested documentation, they did not refund me any fees I was charged for returned checks and other processing fees due to items being returned. Could they have contacted me first for the documentation before deciding to lock my account, their answer to this well that's not our policy. That's the day when I said your no longer my bank. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY!!!

Horrific Customer Service
Follow the logic:
1. I pay my monthly National City online and it is set up as recurring.
2. Seven months go by, no problems
3. May 2008 my monthly statement said they never got my Apil payment.
4. Talk to customer service to get more info and they could not have been any more RUDE.
5. I get Bank of American (bill pay) and National City both on the phone and they worked it out. National City rep said he would credit my account for the late fee.
6. August 08 statement reads 39.40 late fee owed and 18.49 other fees owed
7. Talked to customer service and the person said "why would they credit this, who did this?' I told her to read the notes. She said she would submit the request to have it removed.
7A. I asked what charges for "Total Other Fees Owed" were and her first response was "I dont know, probably taxes or something." Then she told me I bounced a check. If you check back at item #3 they said they never got my payment so when I placed a stop payment on the April check to National City. LOOKS LIKE THEY GOT IT.
Well that cost me $20.00. . Then she kept yelling at me saying "YOU BOUNCED A CHECK, YOU BOUNCED A CHECK (over and over)"
8. Thats as far as the conversation went then the lady said i was being rude and hung up.
I am tranferring my remaining $35K to another account bacause I would rather pay slightly more in interest to a better lender who treats me like a customer.

Bad treatment
There is no doubt in my mind that this is absolutely the worst company to do business with. They called and threatened to take action if we didn't send in our payment that was late. The hostility was unbelievable. I sent them the canceled check and they found they had misallocated the payment. It was their fault. Did they apologize? NO!. They called back and warned my not to be late in the future or action would be taken. IT WAS THEIR FAULT!!! These people are incompetent, rude and generally disgusting idiots!!
I have an equity line of credit that started at $106, 0000. I paid it down to 20, 000 withing a few months. I have never missed a payment. One day I got a 'courtesy' call from NC that I was late and if I did a check by phone I could avoid late charges. I did this and it cost $15.00 extra for the service. 3 days later my pregnant wife answered a call that ended with her in tears. It was National City calling to demanding to know why the payment was a few days late. My wife did not know but she said it was probably an oversight on my part. They responded with excessive anger and told her that people like her should not be loaned money and that our credit rating was going to be trashed. Also, she's the reason mortgage companies are failing. She was so upset by their tone that she cried for some time after hanging up which elevated her blood pressure to dangerous levels (she has pre-eclampsia).
2 days later we received a extremely nasty letter stating that out equity line was being canceled because we do not honor our agreements. We paid over $97, 000 in less than a year!!! Not honor our agreements??? Also, I have paid off one mortgage with them and currently have another that I have never missed a payment on. In fact, I always pay more than the minimum. When I called to complain the woman was so rude I hung up called a different person. This person was at least friendly and told me that our loan was terminated due to the current mortgage crisis. National City punishes the people who pay their debts because of people who don't?? That makes zero sense. She told me that thats the way it is and there is absolutely nothing I can do about it. I called various service numbers and wrote a number of letters but could not get a hold of anyone higher than a phone operator. I then lodged a BBB complaint. That got their attention. They were clearly pissed off on the phone and were entirely uncooperative. I don't know how these people get away with being so abusive!! I had been polite up until then but this time I told them to go f%*& themselves. As promised they trashed my near perfect credit rating.
I despise this company and wish daily that it burns in hell.
My only solace is that I have so far manged to convince three people not to do business with them. It's not a lot and I'm sure they don't give a $%$#, but it makes me feel better. I will continue my campaign to warn people off of National City using every means I can, even if it costs money. No one should have to go through this garbage. In closing, I've never hated anything as much as I hate this company. Another complainant mentioned a class action law suit, I'm in!

I am formally filing this complaint with you about my bank, National City located at 1385 North Green Mount Road, OFallon, IL. 62269. I made a deposit on the 9th of this month of 200$, I personally went to the bank and stood in line at 1:45p.m., I wasn't serviced until slightly after 2:00p.m. They did not have enough people to handle the incoming traffic. My deposit should have been placed on that days business but the bank delayed it till the following Monday the 12th due to their lack of being able to get to me in time. Over the weekend I made purchases on my account that was in the positive to begin with, that I assumed my money was available for. Monday morning I updated my Quicken account to find that my deposit was still pending, even though it should have been placed on the 9ths business!! I wasn't worried due to the fact that the pending items listed my deposit as being processed first. Tuesday morning I found that my account was placed into the negative. Additional deposits had been made to cover any upcoming expenditure I might have had. The bank said to me that there is nothing they were willing to do for me and that I should practice better accounting methods, which is ironic due to the fact that my accounting is done through Quicken which downloads from their web service. The Branch Manager says to me that he would refund 2 of the 9 overdraft fees. I told him that I wasn't satisfied with that and would be closing my account and he said ok. I work in the customer service industry and it seems to me that if I had a customer that I had wronged I would do anything in my power to rectify the situation. This is not the practice that the bank philosophies state. I feel as if they stole money from me and my family and will do anything possible to get it back.
