National Grant Conferences Reviews

Sheri H October 22, 2009
they don't sell anything: no grant writing class: no exclusive information
This company's claims are a total farce: They state when you sign up for the FREE CLASS that you are attending a workshop on how to write grants. The speaker even refers to himself as the "teacher". He taught us how to get registered for a membership for learning how to write grants, going through the analysis of would it be smart to hire a Grant Writer for several thousand dollars if you got back tens of thousands of dollars? (Obvious anwer would be of course.) Would if be worth the return if your spent time to take a class...etc. and then he gets to the advantage of signing up for National Grant Conferences.

The teacher, AND the contract you sign states the you recieve a number of benefits: a 3-day "TRAINING" seminar on how to use the materials and write grants; access to counselors for 6 months who will explain the process and review your business plans for you, etc. I took advantage of the program only to find out that 1.) the counselors don't give correct informations. I found out on my own where in my community to get information about HUD and USDA loans, grants, and other programs. I took the course offered by the Government, got the certificate, which NGC said to do--they didn't provide this information--then I looked up the grants on the governments websites, Grants.gov, HUD.gov, and USDA.gov.

When you sign up for the program they do give your the required 3-day recention period to back out, but you don't have access to the 3-day seminar for another 2 weeks so there was no way for me to decide that I was actually getting value for the money within that period. What's more, materials were missing out of my case when I signed up to begin with. Their remedy was not to extend my recention time but to give me a new box of materials at the 3-day seminar. To late for me, right?

I complained at the seminar repeatedly to several people about the fact that the services I was told I was getting through the councelors I didn't get. Indeed, not only did I get incorrect information, I was told in a couple of phone calls that they only "steer" us in the right direction--not look over our plans or review anything. When I complained at the conference, I was told that I "didn't ask the right question". Gee, I always thought that the student was supposed to be the one without the knowledge, and the teacher was supposed to understand the students needs. How much more plain than, "what do I need to do?" can a question be? This is simply a game for these folks to get out of their accountability.

Here's the worst scam: There are not selling anything! Everything they give you is already FREE from government sources. Right in the class, I was showing my classmate neighbors how to access what he was showing us that they wanted us to pay another serveral thousand dollars to buy during the conference. That's right: I did say they wanted us to buy something more. And that is what the 3-day conference is! There was NO 3 DAYS of TRAINING about what we had already purchased. I paid $1000 for a 3-day long commercial for another $4000-$10, 000 program (depending on how much you had to blow, or how stupid/desperate you were). Believe it or not, many of the people in the class actually bought into this. The "teacher" spent a lot of time telling everyone they had wasted a lot of years doing nothing and "were they going to continue doing nothing?"

Let me repeat: Everything given to you in your materials is already available FREE through government websites. They are giving us nothing. I thought I must be wrong. so to be sure, I spent sometime going over all the materials. (why not, I was already past my 3-day recention time without the ability to inspect the product any way, what the heck?) Not only are they nothing more than government information, IT WAS OUT DATED!

Adding insult to injury, and as the final straw, a representative from NGC called me 3 weeks out from the seminar saying he wanted to interview me to see if I qualified for their advanced program. I asked if they guarantee the program, he said they guarantee that they look for the best candidates possible for the program. I said again, since [he] was obviously going to ask me to fork out some money up front for a product I hadn't seen or inspected, if they guaranteed the program. He again said they guaranteed they find the best possible candidates. That would be "No". I played along to see where this would lead. Here''s where it leads: It will cost between $5000 and $30, 000 and if you don't have the money, they'll tell you to borrow it. Yep, that's right the people who started off advertising that they teach how to write grants really just peddle folks to go into debt for a non-guaranteed program without definition (he never did actually define what exactly they did for me).

There you have it. Don't do it! This is a total SCAM and should be investigated!
