After many months of searching for a vehicle that I wanted I found on, May 9th 2008 in Detroit Lakes, MN. After looking into the dealer a bit I realized that they were a bigger dealership with 2 other dealerships throughout the state. I made the deal over the phone because I was over 2 hours away. All I had to do was look at the vehicle and sign the papers. All looked well and I was on my way home after being told that this truck is in SUPER condition and you are buying one of your very clean vehicles. Not a thought in my mind that this truck had a black history to it.
1 month after my purchased I noticed that in the right light the fender was a couple shades of color off from the rest of the vehicle. I looked in to it and noticed that the fender was replaced and was repainted. As of what looked like a nice job of repainting, it was still a few shades off. Being the type of guy I was, I blew it off because to the average guy it wasn’t noticeable.
3 months after my purchase I noticed the paint was peeling off the cab of the truck. This threw up many red flags. I car faxed my purchase and it came back with results saying that it was hailed on. I immediately called the dealership and they were willing to work with me.
1 week after negotiating, they came up with the offer of $14, 000 for my truck. 3 months ago I paid $15, 800. Was not satisfied with the offer, but did find a nice truck that I liked which was a little new and had less miles. I wanted to work this deal out in the worst way, but we couldn’t come to a dealership. The second offer they made me was to repaint only the cab of my truck, this wasn’t in my interest because of the dark history of the carfax report. How would this history affect the resale of my vehicle in later years?
All I asked for was my money back or trade up for the value of what I paid for my truck, minus the cost of miles I put on it in 3 months. The total mileage on this truck after I purchased it was 2100 miles. I feel the dealership was in the wrong for not telling me about the dark past of this truck. Not reason I should have to eat the $1800 dollars for a mistake I didn’t make. The only mistake I made was dealing with this dealership.
