charge for sending bill
I cannot believe that the NYSEG utility is charging me $0.73 to send me a monthly bill. I do NOT charge them $0.73 to open their bill..
This is ridiculous...They will also charge you if it is online as well..
Thanks

frequent power outages
Last week we had three power outages - all on beautiful days - so not weather related - June 16, 2011 for almost 4 hours, June 20 and June 21st. There is almost never a week that goes by that I am not resetting all my digital clocks because of power sugers or complete outages or low voltage. They never give you an explanation when you call. And if you are one day late with your payment, they send out a very threatening letter. Worst company to deal with. I have lived in Pound Ridge for 10 years and wished I had bought a generator because NYSEG is so inefficient.

Poor service caused damage
Came home to find we were in a brown out and our refridgerator was making a burning smell. Now it doesn't work. The brown out fried it and now we have to buy a new one. Called NYSEG and they said wouldn't do anything to make it right.

POOR CONSUMER CARE
10/16/2010

This is a formal /personal complaint regarding NYSEG’S business practices as well as their abuse of “Power” and I don’t mean electric or gas. On Thursday October 14th I received a call from my daughter. She said our electricity had just been turned off. ”Some guy from NYSEG shut the power off and came to the door to give me a notice”. My wife was also notified of the situation and she left her job early. When I got home she told me that an Electronic payment that was scheduled for 9/24/2010 never went through. Unfortunately we were on vacation in Ocean City at the time so she could not check our accounts on line. This is what really burns me, we were less than $200.00 in debt to these people and it would not have been 30 days past due until 10/15/2010! We never received notice of their plans to shut us down. They say they sent us a shut-off notice but I do not believe them. All our other mail was present when we got home from vacation even newspapers but nothing from NYSEG. Another problem is the fact that I have severe sleep apnea and I am supposed to sleep using a C-PAP Machine with 6 liters of oxygen. I notified NYSEG of this and their words were “we won’t do anything without a call from your doctor” and even then they could not guarantee when they could turn our electric back on. I made the call to my doctor’s office and explained the situation to them. This was very embarrassing to me. They called NYSEG with my information and still we went 24 hours with no electricity. WHY? In this day and age it is NYSEG’s practice to shut a families electric off with no notice for an unpaid balance of under $200.00 and not even 30 days past due! What if we had young children in the house? We had no heat, no phone, and no lights. We lost food in our refrigerator. I was late to work the next day and my wife had to use personal time and take the day off. WHY? We have been good paying customers and this is how NYSEG handles its business. If I could I would close my account and get service elsewhere but as we all know; NYSEG IS THE ONLY GAME IN TOWN! (And that’s not a monopoly?) The more I talk to people it seems a high percentage of them have had issues with NYSEG. Some not as aggressive, some were even worse. How is NYSEG able to get away with their apparent disregard of peoples day to day life. Do we not have the right to be informed and to address our accusers before retaliation? For reasons I cannot understand my family’s life, for 24 hrs, went from Modern Day to Stone Age with the “Flick of a switch”. It is very unsettling to me that NYSEG has that much POWER.

shared meter
We moved into a trailer in Silver Springs, NY, renting from Mary and Charlie Say. We noticed our first bill from NYSEG was a bit high, but when Mary Say opened her shop in the barn, the fall after we moved in, the bill got very high, and we noticed her phone number on the bill. She was running 4 electric heaters, and our bill skyrocketed. We got a deal with Gateway, Mary Say said we should not use Gateway, to drop it or there would be war. She started giving us twenty dollars toward electric, when we asked why, she said, our electric was run through the barn, vapor lights, her shop and workshop, everything that ran the barn. When we complained summer 2009 to NYSEG, they said there was nothing they could do, no need to come and see the electric boxes. Gateway said it was illegal, The Says said they were putting there own box into the shop, but still gave us twenty dollars. I spoke to a woman at NYSEG that told me everything was being put into a folder, they would get back to me, now after a month, they say there was no such folder, and Public Utility Commission actually yelled at me, said we should have said something sooner, too bad for you. We did not find out it was illegal until we moved, and while speaking to NYSEG about the bill, mentioning the barn, and they said, a shared meter is illegal, and you should not pay any of this bill. We had no idea the Says were breaking the law, Mary Say told us she had NYSEG out to look at the meter, NYSEG said they did not, but every time we call, we get something different, please call me and let me know what I can do

This is about an electric bill that has been through a few debt collections. New York State Electric and Gas has not given me an itemized list that I have asked for.I believe it is an old electric bill dateing back to 1983. It is $4, ooo.00. I have yet to get all the facts and the original dates on that bill. My credit score is low because of it.

Incompetence & overbilling
NYSEG will charge high fees even if you choose another supplier--they call these "delivery charges". These are supposed to cover meter reading, line maintenance, preparing budget billing plans and regular billing. NYSEG had not done an actual read on my electric for 10 months--just estimates. This is a violation of state regulations. They tried to blame me and demanded I go into my cellar to read the meter because I had not provided access---THE METER HAS BEEN OUTSIDE FOR OVER TEN YEARS AND IS VERY EASILY VIEWED! They called again a few days later and insisted it was in my cellar. Again, another call! I even had to request my electrician come to check the meter. He couldn't believe they couldn't find it---it even had a NYSEG tag on it. Anyway, finally an actual read was done and NYSEG owed me over $1, 600.00 ! They had given me a $519.00/month budget amount then they BLAMED ME FOR OVERPAYING! They were taking the payments on autopay (which they also denied). Long story short--REPORT THESE ISSUES TO THE NEW YORK STATE PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSION. You can do it right on-line. They must investigate and assist you. You may also report to the Attorney General's Office. NYSEG has a terrible reputation--you can find out more at the public service website. Good luck!

Overcharged
Have been a customer of NYSEG for over 20 years and started having trouble with them about six years ago. I started to notice that my bills went from $70 a month average to over $230 a month. After calls to them, they told me it must be one of my appliances. I had a new stove with energy star rating, and all of my appliances (stove/oven, water heater, clothes dryer, furnace) are gas. No one is home all day and the house is only 1200 s.q ft. We run the pool pump in the summer and would expect a spike then, but this continued on after the summer season.

After consulting NYSEG when my bills started topping out at over $350 a month, they said I would have to pay an electrician to come out and check to see if my eclectic was bad. I thought that was what they did? Well, the prices I got for someone to look was around $250.00 I decided to just pay the bills. Anyway, I would go to the nyseg site and have the funds electronically removed from my checking account. Was never a problem for three years, then one month I noticed the charge did not come out. I put in for it to go again, and again it did not. I called NYSEG they told me it was an insufficient funds issue, which I knew ws not hte case as I had in excess of $600 in the account at the time.

I called my credit union who said that no attempts where made by NYSEG to remove the funds. I verified my account number with NYSEG and said that something was done wrong on their end because my credit union said no attempts came from them to remove funds . I was now not allowed to pay my bill online because of their screw up. They charged me $5.00 to pay by phone and would not waive the fee. The next month I went to pay online again, and was not allowed. Spoke with two different agents who said it was their fault and would get the matter cleared up. NEVER HEARD BACK FORM THEM, STILL HAD TO PAY BY PHONE, CHARGED $5.00.

To date, I don't get bills in the mail, my bills are now around $25.00 a month (what happened there?) and I still msut pay by phone and get billed $5.00 per month for that. They suck and even when I switched companies to NY Energy Cooperative, I still get billed by NYSEG and they often charge line fees in excess of $150.00 per month is my usage is low No recourse as they are the only game in town really. Ca't wait to leave this backwards State, NY is awful and upstate is the worst when it comes to utilities!

Bad service
As a tenant renting an apartment in Alfred NY we use the electric company NYSEG. First of they charged us for someone elses power useage. When we call about it all they could say was sorry you have to pay for it becuase they use your power even thought the meter reader read the worng meter for our apartment. Then we could not pay the extremly high bill that was not ours for $1400. We recived a shut off notice for the 30th of march and they shut our power off on the 25th. when we call to see why they shut it off early they said because we can. The gentalman that came out and shut our power off stated that NYSEG does not care about their customers they only care about the money. We then call NYSEG and aske how much to turn our power back on that lady qouted use $600 and then we could have the power back on. We went to HEAP and they paid $620 to NYSEG then NYSEG stated now they need $444 to turn us on. When I talk to the supervoser today they stated that we were qouted the wrong amount and there is nothing that they could do. That we need to pay the rest of the money or our power will not be turned on. I am in a low income istuation at the current moment and can not afford to pay. The NYSEG company has no consideration for people I ask to be set up on a payment plan to pay for the eletric that we owe to them and they state that they could not do that until they get the $444. SO IF YOU HAVE A CHOICE BETWEEN ELETRIC COMPANIES DO NOT PICK NYSEG THEY CARE NOTHING FOR THEIR CUSTOMERS. I have never had so many proplems with a company in my life.
