Pep Boys Reviews

Lousy company
When took my car to pep-boys for brake service they put a nail in the side wall of my tire. I inspected my car before I took it in. I also have tire pressure sensors on my car that didn't low tire pressure before took my car there. The mechanic showed me the nail in the sidewall. It was a very small nail that could never had driven over because it was on the side. I informed the manager and he said that none of his employees would never do such a thing. Of course the tire couldn't be repaired because the nail was on the side wall. They tried to sell me another for $138 dollars. What a lousy way to sell tires.

Avoid this company
Please do not use Pep Boys ever. Not even if they are the last option. They will make it worse than it is. Their repairs are so bad. They do their work so roughly and are not even bothered if the thing is working properly again. I had taken my car in for a simple oil change. That was the worst mistake I made. I can't understand how they can make mistakes like they do.

They did not get it done properly they left some part loose. I had to get it done else where. Also once when I had gone to get some part fixed they said that they would have to put another one. They did. But that got ruined quickly. They have all cheap parts. Do not go to them they will do anything to get you back so that they can make more money. Stay away form Pep Boys.

Terrible job
If you want to get an oil change I can recommend Pep Boys but other than that they are simply awful. Do not go to them if you need repairs or need to change anything other than oil. Trust me you will regret it. I had no choice because my car broke down all of a sudden and Pep Boys was the nearest. So I went and got my brakes done there. They did a terrible job. They did not deserve even a pie for that. I was very disappointed with that. I paid and got it done else where. I paid Pep Boys the same amount I paid the dealers to get my brakes fixed properly. I will surely not try them again. They are very bad. Do not go to them you will be left with a feeling of regret and being ripped off after you have received their service.

Stay away
Pep Boys has the worst service you can ever imagine. They do not know what to do. While fixing something they mess something else up. They are very careless and irresponsible. I wish I had never gone to them. They put me in loss and screwed my vehicle too. I had taken my car in to get my starter replaced as it was old and was giving me a lot of problems. They replaced my starter but while in process they messed up some wires. It caused a lot of damage. On my way back home I smelt something burning, some plastic. So I went to the nearest garage and was told that they did a blunder with the wires that caused my battery which I had recently purchased and my alternator which was new too to go bad. Please don't trust them with your vehicle. They will mess things up just coz they don't get business and want you to come back. That's what I believe. They do substandard repairs and are dishonest. Stay away!

Simply awful
We had put a brand new set of tires in February because the outsides of the old front tires had worn down too badly from needing an alignment. Two weeks later, we took the truck to Pep Boys for an alignment. Three days ago, I began to hear a squealing noise coming from the front end whenever I turned or went around a curve. I took it to a tire dealer closer to my house and the technician there was aghast. He asked me who did the alignment; he said that my front tires had way too much positive toe and that they were ruined. He estimates that I have less than 10, 000 miles left out of them. He told me that Pep Boys clearly owes me some tires and that I should take the truck back there right away. The service manager's explanation for the fact that my new tires have the same wear damage after their alignment that my old tires had before it was that somebody must have maliciously gotten under my truck since they aligned it last and loosened the sleeve nuts on my left tie rod - thereby throwing my truck out of alignment. I have a copy of the alignment report from February. They made absolutely no corrections to either front wheel. On a truck that was brought to them because it was destroying front tires. I maintain that they either negligently missed the loose tie rod during their non-inspection. So far, they refuse to replace my tires but I'm not finished writing letters. I will file a complaint against them. In the meantime, any one who does business with them be careful.

Awful service
Pep Boys think they offer the best auto repair service but actually they are the worst I have encountered. I used to take my car here for repairs earlier because they were the closest repair service centre. Once I had taken my car there this one time and left it there for repairs for almost a week. When I got my car back it was worse than what it was when I had given it to them. They buggered it up totally and I couldn't get it repaired at any other service centre other than the dealers which I knew wouldn't come cheap. I wish I hadn't gone to them in the first place. I wasted extra money going to them when I should have directly gone to the dealers or any other service centre. Please avoid Pep boys at all costs.

Lies, lies, lies
Pep Boys' advertising tag line is "Pep Boys does everything for less" - but nothing could be farther from the truth.

Customers walking into a Pep Boys auto service center will see a prominently displayed sign, comparing the Pep Boys store price for common auto services, such as oil changes, wheel alignments, brake jobs, etc. - about 10 services in all - with nearby chain-store competitors. The sign board will show that Pep Boys prices are slightly lower than the competition for these services.

However, what customers aren't informed of with equal prominence is that for all other types of services, Pep Boys bills on a time and materials basis. And Pep Boys' hourly shop rate is approximately the same as the rates charged by new car dealer service departments, which are almost universally regarded as the most costly place to obtain service for a vehicle.

This practice would seem to clearly contradict the claim "Pep Boys does everything for less." Pep Boys' prices are competitive only for a small selection of services. For all other services, their prices are typically about the same as a new car dealer, and significantly higher than independent auto service providers.

It doesn't take an attorney or auto repair expert to understand that Pep Boys engages in deceptive advertising practices. On top of that, as a survey of various consumer review web sites and Better Business Bureau reports reveals, Pep Boys has a consistent track record of providing poor service, charging for repairs that aren't effective, and using questionable techniques to upcharge customers for unnecessary parts and repairs.

Unfortunately, I learned these facts for myself the hard way. Pep Boys charged me for over $500 in repairs, including $90 for an "in-depth" engine diagnostic. But this work did not accurately diagnose or repair my original problem, which was later corrected when another mechanic simply changed my fuel filter.

Any consumer interested in obtaining high-quality and effective auto repairs at a reasonable price can do much better than Pep Boys.

riped off
EVERYONE, WATCH OUT FOR PEP BOYS ANAHEIM HILLS CA.!!! Took my jeep grand Cherokee in for a radiator check and repair if possible for a leak. radiator was not repairable and agreed to replace. also at the advise of the service rep, replaced thermostat because of the mileage on vehicle. after work was complete, got vehicle home and found fan shroud cracked and "GLUDED" back in place. took it back and problem was handled by manager. STEVE KENNEDY. he told me that they did not break the part but would replace it free of charge. hu? why would they replace it if they did not break it? he had to order part and would take a couple weeks. part arrived and was wrong part number. would have to reorder. in the same conversation, STEVE KENNEDY asked if they could fix it to make it look good so he would not have to EAT a $675.00 fan shroud? told him no. he said he would call me when the part arrived. well, it never arrived and he never called! STEVE KENNEDY is never available to answer my calls and continues to avoid me. after filing a complaint with the BBB, they also have failed on returning an answer to my complaint! what is going on here? does STEVE have a brother at the BBB? next stop, Dept of Automotive Repair! STEVE KENNEDY and the mechanic should be terminated for unethical business practices!!! (if they haven't already been). if i conducted my own business like this, i would be out of business in a heartbeat.

Overcharged
So my husband and I are trying to upgrade our 2002 Mustang GT. We took it to Pep Boys to get whole new shocks and struts put on the car. We we quoted approximately $425.00. We agreed to pay this along with we were also getting a tune up since the car was well over 50, 000 miles. Well we get a call about 2 hours into it saying that they needed to charge us an additional $100 for labor since they needed to removed speaker boxes! Really?! Shouldn't that have been something that they saw first before they tore the car apart? What if I didn't have an extra $100 lying around?! The car was already apart! Anyways, we sucked that up and paid the extra $100. A couple of days later the car started to get a wicked chug in it while it was in idle, almost like it was going to die. So we took it back to Pep Boys and asked them to please fix whatever they did after the tune up that made that happen, because obviously it was something they did, it never had that problem before. They refused to look and told us that we could pay for a diagnostic for $100 and it if was their fault they would fix it. Well I flat out refused to pay them more money to lie and tell me that it wasn't their fault. So I took it to a local mechanic and while messing with the car, apparently someone at Pep Boys slipped with their screwdriver, or some tool similar to it, and punctured a hole in one of the hoses, causing the air to seep out. We took it back and told them that they needed to fix it since we had identified the problem without their $100 help. They flat out refused and told us to prove that they did it. REALLY?!?!?! I was shocked at the level that they would go to not to fix a simple hose! It would have taken 10 minutes at most for something they caused!!! NEVER EVER use this Pep Boys! They will not old overcharge you but break something at the same time and then refuse to fix their own mistake!

Terrible company
I am writing to explain my dissatisfaction with Pep Boys. In January, I had to replace a catalytic converter. Pep Boys on Cobb Parkway in Marietta, GA charged me an over $550 for that service. Two weeks later, I had to take my car back again because I had identical symptoms. According to the service department, my mass-airflow sensor had gone out, costing another $250.00. Under normal circumstances, I would not have an issue paying for the replacement; however, I have spoken with multiple mechanics who believe that was caused by another issue which is explained in greater detail below.

Three weeks ago, I was driving down the highway and had a great loss of power. I have had random incidents of power loss since I had the catalytic converter replaced, but this was very different. As I was pressing on my gas pedal, my speed was going down instead of up and all of the sudden I heard a loud pop followed by some hissing sounds. I quickly took it to a local mechanic and got it fixed, as by this time, I was distrustful of Pep Boys. The EGR valve had blown a hole in it. Not just a small hole, a hole that told the mechanic that there was a substantial amount of pressure coming from somewhere and needed to escape. The valve looks as if a bullet has been shot through. This repair cost me an additional $320.00. I still had a noticeable loss of power after taking my car to get the EGR valve fixed, so I went for a second opinion at Gordy Tire, a recommended local total care auto shop. They showed me where the catalytic converter had been put on incorrectly and the faulty piping was causing the airflow to not flow through the pipes correctly. They also showed me where the bumper had been melted to my tailpipe due to the substandard installation. I immediately returned to Pep Boys to get it fixed right away. They did fix it, and also informed me that they are going to pay for the bumper replacement. I raised an issue about the EGR valve and they denied it saying “The EGR valve was more than likely caused by when your catalytic converter went bad in the first place, " which is possible, but not likely because the massive hole in my EGR valve occurred 2 months after the catalytic converter was put on incorrectly. I have included a picture of the valve for your reference. After Pep Boys fixed the improperly installed catalytic converter I no longer experienced a loss of power.

I currently have a claim open with their customer service department. I have not heard from anyone in over a week, and would like to get this resolved. I spoke with Scott Hedrick at the service center and knew that the bumper claim was being filed. However, I do not think that replacing the bumper is sufficient, and I contacted their customer service department on 3/17/2009 at 10:26am to make my case for the other issues. The last contact I had was 3/23/2009 at 1:05 pm stating that my claim was accepted for the bumper. As for the other issues, I was told to contact their claims person. I have tried to reach her multiple times, and her mailbox is continually full.

My vehicle could have suffered much more internal damage from putting the catalytic converter on improperly. I was informed that all of the pressure that was caused in two months of driving could have blown my engine or worse. I was lucky that during this time I often worked from home. This is not what I consider good customer service. When service is requested, it needs to be done correctly and with the customer's utmost satisfaction. Pep Boys has failed to deliver on both parts. If this is not resolved to my satisfaction, I will not hesitate to contact my attorney, as well as the Better Business Bureau.

To add to this, I again have a check engine light, and the diagnostic code reads that it is to do with the catalytic converter. My car now has two bad catalytic converters. One is the one that Pep Boys replaced and the second one is an expensive one that Pep Boys would have charged 1000.00+ for (the mechanic is charging 550.00 for it). The store manager does not want to deal with it anymore, so he said to get it replaced at the muffler shop that told me about the catalytic converter going out and he will refund the price. He said he does not want to deal with it anymore. He was a bit frustrated with me saying “You have been taking it to other mechanics to get estimates and not us. We are the experts at emissions inspections and repairs. Not them. You have gotten everything you came in about reimbursed and you want more. I want the catalytic converter issue out of our hands at this point. Replace it with your mechanic and I will refund the whole price of the catalytic converter once you bring the bad one back to me. Your mechanic can deal with the guarantee." I said to him, rather angered “We would not have this issue if you put it on correctly in the first place. Some F^&@$#@$# expert you are."
