Overcharged
I got my car towed to there when it stopped while I was on 30 exton by-pass. They changed the battery and said the problem was fixed. Next day, it failed to start again and this time they said battery needs to be replaced. They did not diagnose it better before. They are very rude and unapologetic. I inquired about a door open sign on dash board and they said it has to be started with $90+ electrical diagnostic. I looked up on internet and used wd-40 to solve it. It cost me $1.65.
They are total rip-off. It happened to some of my friends also.

oil change
I am writing this on behalf of the horrible experience my best friend went through.
She took her 2005 Dodge Durango to Pep Boys to have the oil changed. She dropped her car off and went to have lunch with a friend. When she returned for her truck, she paid for the oil change and proceeded to head home. Approximately 12 minutes later, as she was travelling up the highway towards home, she sees smoke and flames from under the hood. She immediately pulls over, gets out, and calls 911. The Fire Dept came to put out the fire, and discovered that the "mecahnic" at Pep Boys left a shop towel under her hood, which caused the fire. Furthermore, he tied another shop towel around her oil filter to keep it in place, as it was the wrong size filter.
The fire destroyed most of the engine, as well as totalled the front end of the truck. This happened 3 yers ago, and she just recently received a settlement from them.
I would not go to Pep Boys for ANY reason.

Stay away from them!
I brought my 2003 Kia Sedona in to Pep Boys in Port Jefferson Station, NY for an oil change and they talked me into a winterizing special since I also wanted new wipers and washer fluid added. After leaving the car all day for this, my husband picked up the car and brought it home. The next morning, I realized that they never changed the back wiper (which was TYPED on my list of things needed) and my car had NO HEAT! Being January, my windows were icing up on the INSIDE with the defrost on! The next day, the car wouldn't even start! We jumped it and brought it back and after another full day of having the car, STILL NO HEAT!!
They tried to give it back to me claiming there was heat pumping when they checked it! I was furious and let the manager know it! He claimed he was the night manager and had no idea what the day shift had done to my car. I explained the car was working fine when I brought it in two days earlier. After leaving, I brought the car the next day to a REAL mechanic and found out that they had left an air pocket in the antifreeze line (the manager at Pep Boys claimed they had used xxxPSI to put air into the lines to look for leaks, which they supposedly found and repaired). No wonder there was no heat and the car overheated and wouldn't start in 20 degree weather! My advice: don't skimp on repairs by using this chain; get a REAL mechanic!

Fraud and scam
Before I took my SUV to the Santa Clarita Pep Boys I called for a front brake job estimate. $185. When I showed up, they immediately scour my SUV for the up-sell by measuring the tread of the tires. Coincidentally, they have a 'buy three get one free' promotion. Just the brakes, thank you, just the brakes.
A few hours later I get a call from Martin Andrade, the manager. He tells me they didn't realize my SUV was four wheel drive and the new price will be nearly double. Now, my SUV has a 2' lift kit with giant off road tires and six PIAA lights on the front. Didn't know it was four wheel drive? I'm thinking, do I really want these people working on my car? I tell Martin to forget it. The price is too much and besides, I told the person on the telephone and the guy who checked me in it was four wheel drive. I'll swing over and pick the car up. No problem, he tells me.
When I show up, everything is completely torn apart. They had to completely take the brakes apart before they discovered it was four wheel drive? After a long heated argument Martin offered to do the brake job for the original estimated price.I made them put the car back together and took it to a local mechanic.
In hindsite, it's easy to spot their tactics. Low-ball the estimate on the telephone. If the upsell doesn't work when you bring the car in they try to find a reason to raise the estimate. If that doesn't work hold the car hostage by taking it apart.

License to steal
Be very careful when parking your car in the Pep Boys, BJ's - Shoprite parking lot at Metro Plaza Jersey City. If you leave the Parking lot to go to the Mall your car is towed at a cost of $162.00 including taxi. It is taken miles away where you are them strong armed by a scavanger EZ Towing Co.
It so happens I left the Mall but my son and daughter remained in BJ's. Signs are posted but they are ambiguous. EZ Towing photographs you as you leave them steals your car.It is ashamed Pep Boys, Bj"s -Shoprite knowing of this policy doesn't warn its customers.
The EZ Towing Co forced me to pay cash and the low life's that they are mistreated me. Help me to put a stop to this practice. The Landlord is G & S Investors in NYC- call them.

Don't buy from them
4 days after having PepBoys install a remote starter for my wifes car, the car started to try and start itself, the back truck kept on opening by itself and the dash board started to act as if possessed. Pep Boys came to pick up the car and after looking over everything, they said that they have to replace the started as it was fried. They also replaced the auto starting kit they installed. I was being charged for the starter? They said we somehow must have played with the fob on and off buttons and rocked the started on and off. Bullshit, my wife was livid at the accustation that she would be such a moron. I should have told them to pull the whole kit out and refund me the cost of the whole job including he burnt up starter. My wife wanted her car back and I'm holding my breath that the same thing does not happen again. Good Ridance Pep Boys.

Terrible everything
I went into a Pep Boys for the first time yesterday to get some new tires since I'd blown a tire over the weekend. Ordered 2 tires (presumably for 54.99 since that's what it said on the tag) which ended up being $81 ea.. did not notice the price discrepancy till the following day. [strike 1]
That night, one of the NEW tires blew out.
So I dutifully back to the Pep Boys at 8am in the morning on Monday to get it swapped out. Was told by the Manager (Juan) that it would take 1.5 hrs to get to my car since there were 3 other cars in front of me. I waited there a little over an hour in the waiting room and was called to the counter to be told they do not have my tires in stock. Why would you make a customer wait an hour to be told a TIRE is not in stock? Thanks for making me late to work. [strike 2]
Called up the same Pep Boys after getting to work and was told by Juan that the tires wont be in till later in the evening. I asked whether since I have to come in anyway whether I can pick up two more tires as part of the buy-3- tires-get-1-free special (which I wasn't told of yesterday) and Juan raises his voice and tells me hurriedly the invoice is closed and if I want two more tires I'd have to pay full price for them. Even after I explained the salesperson yesterday misrepresented the price of the tires, the manager was completely unsympathetic, uncaring, and even went insofar as to make fun of me for not noticing the price discrepancy yesterday before signing the bill. [strike 3]
Lessons learned: never go to Pep Boys in Jersey City (by the newport mall). They're shadey to customers, women especially, and don't treat you like they value your business at all.

badtreatment of employees
I am an emplyee of pep boys for over 8 years. During the course of these years. I have been denied promtions that I rightfully earned by obtaining ase cetifications. Our health plan was taken away and replaced with a "heath fund". Under this plan I cannot afford to go to the dr. Last year the company decided that they would not be giving raises. This year they decide that they will change the vaction plan. The new plan is fine but they are stealing our days that we have already earned. I have 10 vaction days left until the middle of next year. They are telling me that any unused vaction days by december 28, 2008 will be paid out at a rate of 75%. This rate depends on your anniversary date. Some will only be paid 25%. They act as if the vaction has not yet been earned, but it was earned last year. On top of this the months that I have worked this year up until now those vaction days that I would have got next year are now gone. Thoses days are worth about 2000 to me. Every turn pep boys shafts their employees. People complain that they do not get good service at pep boys. There is a reason for that and it is the way the employees are treated by the company in turn is the way they treat customers. Pep boys fails to realize that when you screw your employees, it makes them not care about their jobs, which shows when you enter a pep boys. Pep boys needs to realize you must spend money to make money. Give the employees a good reason to want to keep their jobs and you will see dedicated employees, which will result in higher sales and customer satsfaction. On top of this offering the best pay rate around will get the best people around. Happy Holdys Pep boys :(

Bad service
I have, this evening, visited the Pep Boys Service and Parts Store at 375 Quaker Lane in West Warwick, Rhode Island. The intent of my trip was to purchase and install four brand new tires on a vehicle that I have recently purchased. Unfortunately, I cannot say that the experience was a good one. From unprofessional and rude employees, to delayed service it was more of an incident than an experience.
Upon entering the store two of the associates, claiming to be managers, were yelling derogatory comments towards each other across the storefront between the service desk and the registers. Not only were they being rude to each other, but they did this whilst another customer stood between them waiting to be assisted. After this episode, the associate at the service desk apologized to the customer and discussed the reason for his visit. Additionally, there was a mechanic sitting at the service desk eating his dinner in front of customers.
After nearly fifteen minutes of waiting to catch an employees attention at the service desk, I was able to discuss the situation that I needed remedied. I have recently purchased a 1998 Mercedes ML320 and needed four new tires as the ones on the car were bald. As I know little about how to purchase tires for such a vehicle, I consulted the associate who answered my queries with Ill help you in a second and then proceeded to pick up the telephone.
Because it was obvious that I was not going to be helped any time soon, I made my way to the tire display area and proceeded to look at what tire I thought may be the ones I needed. I had written down the measurements of my current tire (265/50/R20), but the closest I could find to this was a tire measuring 275/55/R20. I asked the service clerk, Steven Ronci, if this would fit similarly or if he had any other tires with the measurement I needed. Steven assured me that the tire I had selected would fit, and proceeded to write up a work order slip. He advised my partner and me of the price, including labor, to have it mounted to the car, and quoted a time expectancy of one hour and fifteen minutes for the job to be completed. At this point it was five minutes after six oclock pm, and Steven assured my partner and me that he would have this completed by seven thirty.
My partner and I left for a short period of time to grab a bite to eat, and were back at the store at seven oclock. The automobile was in one of the bays, but had not yet been put up on the lift. My partner and I sat down in the waiting area. Within nearly ten minutes after we were seated Steven went outside to look at another customers car, and a mechanic named Stew stormed into the storefront. He was cursing under his breath and yelling for Steven. When he was advised by yet another customer that Steven had gone outside, he flung the door open and went to find him.
Minutes later my partner went to use the ladies room and Steven came back into the storefront/waiting area. While assisting another customer Steven was verbally assaulted by Stew who had hurled the door to the garage open so hard that it slammed into the sheetrock wall next to it. At this point Steven followed Stew back into the garage area and the two ensue to argue. Stew and Steven both slammed the door open and shut several times over the course of ten minutes. There was one point where all of the customers stood up from the waiting area and went to the observation window because it sounded as if the two men had come to blows. Mind you, this all occurred whilst a manager, Tony, stood by without saying anything.
At this point, disgusted with the display of brute force and poor customer service, I advised Steve that I no longer wanted my tires changed there. I asked him to please have the new tires taken off of the rims, and to return my keys. He advised me that this was fine as the tires didnt fit the SUV anyway.
After my partner returned from the ladies room we witnessed, over the course of the remaining time, Stew and Steven continuing their argument. Stew, several times cursing and speaking in menacing tones while pacing back and forth between the mechanics garage and the waiting area. By the time we left, it was 8:22 pm. This is almost a complete additional hour from the time we were quoted. Not only this, but as additional customers entered the facility they were apologized to, and advised that the tire machine had been broken the whole day and their vehicles would take a little while longer to fix.
At no point in time was this mechanical difficulty relayed to my partner or me. We waited for almost three hours to have a simple procedure done to an automobile. Also, during the entire time, only two of the tires were taken off of the vehicle because of the constant arguing back and forth between employees and supposed managers. I am not placing blame with only these two individuals, but with the entire staff as not one person took responsibility or the initiative to handle the out-of-control situation.
As a customer and a person I am revolted and dismayed at how your company treats their clients. We come into your stores expecting to be serviced to the best of the employees ability and with courtesy and professionalism. I can say that none of these qualities were displayed by your associates tonight. This is the most horrible experience that I have ever encountered anywhere. I sincerely think that you should reconsider the value of these employees, and whether they are worth losing customers over. They seem to have severe personal differences, and anger management issues that intimidate, scare, and belittle their coworkers and your customers.
I will, from now on, take my business elsewhere. This company claims to [pride] itself on providing the best customer care and highest quality work available anywhere, and having fully trained, ASE-certified technicians [that] provide sophisticated, professional, and highly technical auto repair and automotive maintenance services, using state-of-the-art computer diagnostic equipment, seven days (and six evenings) a week. Im sorry to say that this is a blatant lie. The company claims to have the best prices anywhere, but I would rather pay double or even triple the price to be treated with more professionalism and decency.
According to the Pep Boys website, Taking good care of [your] customers and earning their trust is the cornerstone of [your] business. Im sorry to say that youve failed, and this cornerstone will lead your foundation to crumble.
I expect to hear from a Pep Boys representative as soon as possible. I am not looking for anything free, or for any services. I simply want to advise you of the mishandling, and to suggest that all of your employees be retrained if not replaced.

Nice try
Purchased 4 new tires under the 'Buy 3 Get 1 Free' offer. Mailed in my information and received a card saying that my purchase was outside the promotion dates. I called and the representative said they had mistakenly entered it under the wrong code.
First of all - nice try. Secondly - Pep Boys has been running the same deal for as long as I can remember. How was my purchase outside some offer range? Pep Boys likely sends that card to most customers in hopes that a minimum of 50% will be too lazy, lose the card, or simply take Pep Boys' word. I did finally receive my rebate, but I will never set foot in another Pep Boys.
