Pep Boys Reviews

Left car unlocked
Have you ever gone to a Pep Boys Store, especially the one in Pleasant Hills / Pittsburgh Pa and LOCKED you car door before going inside for repair service.

You locked you doors, because you didn’t want your personal belongings stolen in the parking lot.

Then, as you are sitting in the waiting room (4-10 hours latter), you see your car in the parking lot, you start to wonder how long has been there, is it finished and why no one was courteous enough to inform you your car is finished ?

After you go to the counter, wait another 15 mins, you are told that you car is finished, we were just coming to let you know (ya right).

When you get to the parking lot, you discover that your car is UNLOCKED.

Then start to wonder if someone is hiding in the back seat.

A few days latter, something you thought was is the car, you can’t find is now missing.

Then you start to wonder, did it disappear inside the store, or in the parking lot?

On the other hand, did it disappear inside the store and that’s why the doors were left unlock to divert the location of a possible theft ?

Hum makes you wonder.

Tired of this company
I agree, I am sick of India people coming here with their rude and nasty attitudes and habits. India people will throw a white person under the bus in a heartbeat to a black and vice versa because we all talk about how they do that!!! They are also dangerous...after all...their group bears "al quaida". They are here in our country and complaining about blacks and whites all over the place. Then our govt and companies deny us jobs and outsource the jobs to India people and Mexicans...Mexicans need to be deported and it is treasonistic for illegals to be coming here and going to college on our money...white and black kids cannot do this and lets not talk about how unfair this country has been to NAtive Americans!!!And woe on any state who gets a Mexican or Al quaida Indian for govenor or any other office...surely we cannot be this blind!!!

Dishonesty
Several years ago my mom took her Ford F150 to Pep Boys for an alignment (it was verring off to the left.) She dropped it off, they did the alignment (well, I mean...they charged her for an alignment) and she took it home. It wouldn't drive a straight line out of the parking lot. She told me about it, so I went to take a look. I used to be a mechanic myself, so I am a little harder to fool when it comes to auto repairs. I got on my knees and popped my head under the truck. It took two seconds to see the problem...the bushing for the radius arm was shot. An alignment will never take on a vehicle if all the suspension components are not in working order and since the radius arm wasn't, there was NO way that the vehicle could hold its alignment. Therefore either an incompetent mechanic hooked the truck up and did an alignment without bothering to look the vehicle over. Anybody should have been able to notice what the problem was! Or they never pulled the truck in to the garage and charged my m0m for doing nothing. I just hate it when Auto Service places take advantage of women. I was pissed off. I drove her truck up there. I told the Assistant Manager that I wanted to speak with the Manager. He assured me that he was the man to help me with my problem. I told him the story and requested my mothers money back. He said he would have to get the manager (HA HA). Anyway, I told that Manager the story and he started telling me about all the measurements that go into an alignment. I didn't tell him that I knew anything about cars. I told him that the car was still veering to the left like it was before it was brought in. He suggested buying new tires. After letting him blow smoke up my ass for five minutes... I told him that I used to be a mechanic and that there is no way that an alignment would take on the vehicle because the radius arm bushing is bad. I argued with him for about five minutes and spoke very loud to ensure that all the people waiting for their car to be serviced. They had long faces as if they were now worried about if they are being taken to the cleaners. I ended up getting my moms money back and he told me to never come back. Trust me, he didn't have to worry about me returning. What a joke of a company. Beware! Take your car elsewhere.

Up selling & lying about what your vehicle requires
Beware of this maintenance shop at this store and the manager. I went in for an oil change and tire rotation/balance and they tried to up sell me over $1, 000.00 worth of parts and additional service I did not need. Plus they tried to charge me for my tire rotation and balance when I bought the road hazard program with the new tires I bought at that store which I was told was all included. To make matters worse when I left in my vehicle the front wheel alignment was out so badly I had to go to Goodyear (who I do trust) to fix it. Pep boys told me my wiper blades were cracked and I needed an air filter, fuel filter shocks and struts. I checked the wiper blades and air filter. As I waited for my vehicle they did the same thing to every customer there. I also learned that when Pep Boys runs sales for example, a shock sale for so much off each shock, if the sale is made the difference on the sale goes to the mechanic so the mechanics make more money when you buy more. So, the manager and mechanics have a huge incentive to up sale every customer. When I complained at the pep boys 800 number customer service and left a message they did not call back so I wrote a complaint through the company website. Don't bother doing that either if you make the mistake of have service at pep boys and experience problems there because the complaints are routed back to the store manager. I have included the actual measurements Goodyear did to prove pep boys messed with my vehicle. My advice, go to Goodyear.

Overcharge for Services
On 11/5/10 my fiancee went to get a estimate of how much it would cost to have 4 "stripped" lugnuts removed. He arrived at 3:30pm at 5:15pm the estimate still was not completed. He left to come and pick me up at work and we were back for the estimate at 6:00pm. We waited until 7:30pm before we were told that the person who would be able to complete the estimate was not in. We didn't quite understand why such a simple job could not be completed by another mechanic. We were then told that the tool needed to complete the job was not there; it was with the mechanic who was not in. We were given paperwork were told to comeback in the morning. After a total of 3 hours and 15 mins. nothing was completed. We were infuriated but returned as we were told. We arrived at 10:00am the truck was pulled until 1/2 hour later. The mechanic used a hammer, chistle and air gun to get the lugnuts off. He was not at the truck the entire time. There was wandering back and forth from the customer service desk to the back, talking on the cell phone, talking with other mechanics, helping with other cars and a lengthly trip to the bathroom. We were told that one of the 4 lugnuts that needed to be removed was "crossthreaded" so a replacement nut could not be put on. The mechanic was the one who damaged it. The job was not completed until 12:00pm. We were charged $58.34!
We immediately went to a manager to complain and he talked to the service manager of the repair department. We were told that the job was a timely one and very difficult. We were obligated to pay because they completed the work. The parts were a total of $4.00 and were were charged $50.50 for labor. What a ripoff! So for the Pep Boys of 1440 Route 46 East in Parsippany, NJ : You need to learn the meaning of Customer Service!

Ripoff
I was driving my truck and teenage daughter from Temecula CA to Las Cruces NM for a car dealer friend to restore it for her. I'd replaced, repaired and checked out everything I could before leaving to assure a troublefree trip, but a new thermostat and heater hose problem overheated the engine and I pulled off the road in Yuma at about 7:30pm. The Shell station had a mobile mechanic's card I called on and when AAA showed up for the tow into Yuma, the driver offered that Pep Boys was open 'till 9, so I had him tow me there instead of taking a chance on a ripoff. Arriving in plenty of time at about 8pm to find 10 unoccupied bays out of 11, I asked them to get on it but they wouldn't. The tow truck driver drove us across the street to a Ramada Inn. Pep Boys opened at 8 and I walked over at 8:30 to find they'd done nothing but pulled my truck into a bay. It took them hours to confirm the problem and do 20 minutes' work changing the heater hose and replacing the thermostat. They presented me with a $260 bill that was finaled out at $253.98 and I paid it out of desperation to get going and get the hell out of there. In the end, it was Pep Boys I should have been wary of, not the mobile mechanic who I apologized to. I was an old Pep Boys fan but not anymore. They took advantage of this 71 year old traveler and his teenage daughter. Their marketing claims about being reasonable are lies, and I will never darken their door again. They are but one more story of greed and disregard for the public out there.

Don't let them diagnois problem and fix because they will just take your money
Took the car in to be fixed. The car would start and run, but would intermittedly not start again. It would eventually start after 20 minutes to an hour. This would happen about four to five times a week. Pep Boys said they were, and I quote " pretty sure " it was the spark plugs and wires that needed to be replaced. $360 later the problem still existed. They refunded the dianostic fee of $90 and didn't back their claim of fixing the problem. Took it to A and J tires and they replaced the main relay and the problem was fixed. (and, by the way, they said if it wasn't fixed they guaranteed they would fix it without anymore cost). I called Pep Boys corporate 3 times...The second time they said it was resolved, and iftwas left at that. They re-opend in again and the 3rd time said it was closed with no solution. I understand it went to the top at Pep Boys and that is it, sorry. Stay away from them. All they want is your money and who cares if the problem you took it in for is still there. Great customer satisfaction. Beware!!

Engine Block Cracked
In early June 2010, I took my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo with a 4.0 liter 6 cylinder engine to the above Pep Boys facility to simply have the heater & radiator hoses replaced. I had bought this vehicle new 11.5 years ago, and it only had 87k, milies on it. I am very consistent with getting all of the necessary oil and other fluid changes done at the recommended intervals. I have 3 older vehicles that range in age from 11.5 to 13 years old, plus 2 new GM vehicles purchased in the past yeear . There was no leaking of any cooling fluid occurring when I took the vehicle in for service, just tired old hoses that needed replacing. When I got the vehicle back, it was obviously not put back together correctly as there now was a fluid leak occurring by the new water pump that they also recommended be installed, and which I agreed to. On 3 separate occassions I took the vehicle back to them with no correction of the issue. The fluid in the coolant reservoir never ran out during this period as a very sensitive sensor when plenty of fluid still there even when cold. Just one of those nuisance leaks that messes up the driveway, but does not require topping off, but every 3-4 weeks. As you will recall we had a very warm summer in DE.

Just before the last time I took it back, the thermostat started showing the engine was running at an above normal temperature. When Pep boys looked at, John there stated they finally found the leak issue, a bad clamp, but now suspected that I had a blown head gasket. I then took the vehicle to one of the mechanics I utilize, for more complex matters, and they determined the block was actually cracked in 2 places between the #1 and 2 cylinders. I highly suspect that either the mechanic walked away from the vehicle while replacing the fluid before the thermostat opened and an air vacuum formed causing the block to overheate and after 3 more months, it finally failed. Or the mechanic just poured too cool a fluid into the engine while it was hot. We will never know as no film to document. I wouldn't film my employees either if doing things like this. Could be used against them in a court of law, eh?!

This vehicle never had any engine recalls or service bulletin on it for any issues regarding the cooling system, engine issues that could have led to this premature failure. All the folks I have spoken to say that these engines don't even have head gaskets blow until the 180k to 200k range. The design of the engine goes back when the compny was still Nash in the 1930s. I ended up having to put a used engine in to it with 72k miles on it at the cost of $3, 200.

I asked the Service Manager, Ed Thomas (see other complaint out on this site dated 9/1/10 by another party), to look into the matter. I provided him with a paper photo of the block cracks and also sent it to the email address he provided. He then spoke with someone in the Philly headquarters named Victor who rejected any responsibility on the part of Pep Boys in my engine failing.

If you want your car to limp, I highly recommend the Pep Boys facility on Corcord Pike. If you want your vehicle to run, I suggest you take it to Ponte's Automotive, also on Concord Pike, or Penny Hill Performance on Philadelphia Pike. I will never have any of my vehicles serviced at Pep Boys for even simple items like tires, brakes, oil changes, let alone hoses! I highly recommend that you not take your vehicles there either. I have been going to Pep Boys facilities for over 30 years. No more, not even to pick up polishes, filters and other automotive products.

Stay tuned, as I will be bringing a suit against Pep Boys in the coming weeks in Small Claims court here in DE. I hope they have a great lawyer at Pep Boys to make this entertaining. Keep checking back here for updates on the case. Also, you will see me in the coming weeks with signs out front of their facility to help with the re-education of existing customers, and those that are considering using the services of this pitiful organization that does not stand behind their work. Shame on them! Dave H.

Bought 4 tires, 3 defected
I have been treated badly and feel like I was ripped of on my purchase of new tires.. I have had to replace three in 3 months becouse of defects.. The customer service was terrible and I purchased a warranty on them but was charged to replace them.. I will never let any one else go thru what I have or spend a 1000 dollars on defected products or fake warrantys with pep boys again... Further more the employees were playing poker on the work computers as I sat there trying to get my problem resolved which did not happen.

Replaced non-defective electrical harness for $2400
Pep Boys in Santee, CA somehow determined that the electrical harness in my Ford Escape was defective. I asked if they had seen this problem previously and they said Yes, twice. I told them I wanted the old harness. Two days and $2400 later the 'problem' was fixed and I got the car and the old harness back. After inspecting the harness I could find NO burned or broken wires. The ONLY 'defect' that I found was a severely corroded terminal. The cost of cleaning or replacing the terminal would not be more than a couple dollars.

So, Pep Boys in Santee California ripped me off to the tune of $2400 simply because they thought is was easier to replace and entire electrical harness than to search for a defective terminal.

I suspect the mechanic needed the work (there weren't many vehicles in the shop at that time) and he probably got a 'nice' bonus for bringing in a $2400 job.

I've NEVER been back to any Pep Boys, and I don't hesitate to let anyone know of their incompetitent mechanics
