Unauthorized Billing
I signed up for the black card membership on February 2, 2008. I was told that I was only signing a one year contract (which I did read, and it did state that it would have to be renewed/signed by me in 2009). I stopped going when I moved away around Jan and did not cancel because an extra 21.63 would be less than their cancellation fee of $50. They keep charging my credit card, $21 each month and last month they charged $40 for "fees". I've called numerous times to have it cancelled, but they said I have to do it in person. So I drive 30 minutes to a planet fitness and they state that I have to cancel it at the same place that I signed up, which is over 2 hours away! I then called THAT facility and they said no, you can cancel it anywhere so I go back to the same place to cancel and they say "we cannot cancel your membership because we don't have a fax machine". They have taken $150+ from me, do not sign up with these people it is a scam!

yearly fee
Wen I joined in August you pay alot of fees, like maintance. Then in June they take it out of you account again so you actually pay it twice a year. You have to go to the fitness center on the day you started your contract or they will start it again for another year. So I feel I have been screwed twice. They suck.

Annual Fee Charge
I pay a monthly fee of $19.99 on the 17th of every month under my agreement with Planet Fitness, taken out of my bank account automatically. They in return charged my bank account on June 1st for $39.00 that I did not know about. They call this their "Annual Fee". My bank account was over-drafted over $50.00 because of this, ($39.00 & an overdraft fee) I didn't know what this "ACH" fee was until I called my bank. Planet Fitness is the only place I have an automated payment taken out from my bank account too so they automatically took the money out and did not send me a notice. I remember that when my boyfriend and I signed up we went to the gym before it had even opened and they were running this "FANTASTIC DEAL" for a 1 yr black card membership. They were waiving the initiation fee and the first yr annual fee. My contract does say that I will be charged the $39.00 annual fee on June 1, 2009. To me this meant for the next year to lock in the same price. I mean seriously who really would think that they were gonna pay a $39.00 fee for something they have already paid for??? Certainly not anyone I know.
I called the Planet Fitness I got my membership from and started asking questions. I tried to be as nice as possible because it's not the person's fault I was talking to & I kept apologizing because I was getting a little mad. They understood, even though I didn't get far. As soon as they answered I said I had a question and they said is is about the $39.00 fee. Hmm, how did they guess? BECAUSE EVERYONE'S PISSED OFF! Finally this kid put his boss on the phone because I told him I wasn't taking no for an answer of me getting reimbursed my money.
The thing that kills me is that I signed up for the gym June 23, 2008 for a 1 yr contract which means my contract is up on June 23, 2009. Why would I want to "lock in" as they say a $19.99 a monthly fee/rate if I am not going to have it after 23 days??? And they won't reimburse me??? I never even went to the gym either, only 1 time. NO LIE! LOL I didn't cancel because I can't afford the cancellation fee that you have to pay all at one time. They said if I wanted the fee to be waived I had to cancel my membership in writing by the 25th of the previous month (being May). Again, if I would have done this I would have had to pay the cancellation fee and I only had 1 month left. That would have made no sense even if I did get a notice about the fee. They should take into consideration when peoples' memberships are up. They sure know when to take your money!
With that said, the manager got on the phone and I was a little more mad, again thanking her for listening to me complain and apologizing. I explained everything above to her and she said that the company does not send notices about this. I asked her why and she said it is hard & takes too much time for them to figure out who is a black card member to who is a regular member. Ok, that doesn't make sense because you are charging the black card members this $39.00 fee so you would have to know who they are, right??? I said it was not her responsibility as an employee to do this "paperwork" for their corporate office. I said if they want to run a business then should get it together. I work in business, I know! She then told me that the Planet Fitness gyms around this area (York, PA I guess) are franchised so there are different owners. Again...HMMMM, wouldn't that make it easier for them to tell the difference in their members? I also asked her why they don't explain completely about this fee when you sign up & she said it should have been told to us. Why would I need to look up membership info on the internet if I should have been told everything? She ended with telling me that all I can do is WRITE (YES I SAID WRITE) to their corporate office explaining all of this and they will send it on to the person that owns that Planet Fitness. I went to the website to find no address and no phone number, NOTHING! This is 2009 not 1999, why should I have to write to someone about this. I should be able to email or call or something!
I would honestly take it as a loss and pay the over draft fee and annual fee if my membership wasn't up in DAYS! I mean, I have been paying for a membership that I have not used for 12 months now so what is $50.00 more? (I'm being sarcastic).
Now that I think of it...as a black card member I am allowed to use any Planet Fitness there is so how are they gonna know who I am if they are owned by different people? See, that sounds silly and so does many of the answers I got! I AM NOT PLEASED!
Thanks for listening. Let me know if this happened to you.

Ridiculous Charges!!
On 12/30/2009 my husband and I became black card members which we thought would be great, as time went out we realized we could no longer take time to go. On 05/27/2009 we went to there to cancel our memberships. Since we canceled before the year we had to pay a buy out fee (which we were aware of), we wrote a check out for $116.00 total for both cancellations, in which time we thought okay thats it we are done. NOPPPEE we were wrong, on the 06-01-2009 they charged $78.00 to our account!! WTH??? So i called them immediately they stated that the charge is the annual renewal fee, didnt i just cancel the membership?? She stated that because we didnt cancel by the 25th of May (2 days earlier) they charged the renewal fee!! i think this is b.s because i just gave them $116 for a cancellation and they charged a renewal!!! I would not recommened anyone to go there because they are rip offs!!

Membership Renewal Fee
I had tried to call and cancel my membership in April, but was told that I could not cancel it until May 18th. I went to cancel the membership on May 31st. I had to go "in person" to cancel. This is why it took me to May 31st to cancel - as I have a very hectic schedule at work and travel. When I signed the form to cancel the woman at the counter told me that I missed the deadline and that I would be billed $39.99 for next year's renewal fee. She said she didn't have the ability to waive the fee and offered the option to call the store manager on June 1st (Monday). I just got off the phone with the manager who told me that I need to read my contract because it states that I needed to cancel by May 25 in order to avoid being billed. I told him of course I thought any sane person with an ounce of integrity would waive that fee because it is wrong. He offered to have the district manager call me. He would not give me her number - but would relay the message to her. Nice customer service there. While I have no complaints about the gym itself. I do feel that these are very shady business tactics. Who keeps their gym contract on hand to refer to. And if I had been allowed to cancel over the phone this whole issue could have been avoided. The whole thing is ridiculous. I would advise you all to keep in mind what happened to me when your contract end date comes close so you can avoid the hasssle and loosing money for nothing.

dirty tanning beds
I just joined planet fitness as a blackcard member which sounds like a great deal. You get tanning, gym, 1/2 off drinks and free guest uses. However they fail to mention how dirty they are. You would think that the tanning beds would be clean. NOT EVEN CLOSE!!! I went in the bed there was grease and hair on the walls and a foot print on the floor. Mind you that this is somewhere you go in naked and greasey from tanning lotion and you can get MRSA, crabs, scavies, swine flu etc. When I asked for the maneger I got attitude and was told I would have to wait. Then I got some dirty looking scummy guy who is rude and tells me I should know I have to clean them myself even though I was never told and there are no notices anywhere in the place that state the beds need to be cleaned by the customers

expired credit card
My credit card expired in January, and Planet Fitness never notified me. They immediately started withdrawing the $10 fee. I continued to go workout unawares and unnotified. Without me submitting my new expiration date, they were still able to get my (and my husbands) monthly membership fee as well as the $10 for each account. It is now May, and they have stolen over $80 from my account. Trying to get this settled, the employees were very rude and unhelpful. We are both canceling our memberships, and would encourage everyone else to do the same.

Awful place
I will start out by saying if anyone had any thoughts about joining this gym...change ur mind now. Dont let the 10 dollar membership nonsense fool you. yes this gym does have different deals where you can join for very cheap but you're much better off paying a bit more money so you can deal with people who actually care every time you want to work out. this leads me to my next point...THE STAFF. they are beyond rude. i was amazed at how employees could get away with treating their customers the way they do. there was one incident where i went and asked an employee wen a better time to come was because the place was packed beyond belief. the fat meathead of an employee replied "HA" and that was it. the way these people handle their customers is very poor and in fact outrageous. also, the small gym is always packed... while i realize that most gyms are crowded during the rush hours...this is simply out of control! really its a fire hazard. if ur thinking of going during rush hours be prepared to wait in a long line to use anything. even wen it is not the rush hours it is still packed and none of the cardio machines are ever available. so what was supposed to be a quick hour and a half workout turns into a 3 hour ordeal. this place is bullshit. there is so much time spent doing nothing there because of its size and capacity there is always a line. so when you're working out be prepared to have half the gym staring at you while u work out because theyre waiting in line and have nothing better to do. their area for abs and things such as yoga is about the size of a big bathroom. no joke. another thing about the gym that i dont understand is they do this thing like once a week where they order a bunch of pizza there? ok yea i mean that makes perfect sense because i love to smell greasy pizza while working out haha u kidding me? they also have toasters and bagels for in the morning so when i work out the smell of the toast and bagels and stuff definitely motivates me hahah give me a break. dont even get me started on the "lunk alarm"! again this place is bullshit.

Employee should be Fired!!!!
I was in Planet Fitness's White pLains location on 5-9-09. It was 20minutes to 6:00pm when my boyfriend and I arrived. KNowing that the last tanning session was at 6:20, we both signed up for that time slot. After working out, we went over to the desk to tell them we were ready to tan at about 6:18. Someone had crossed out my name, put theirs and already gone in. NO other beds were available. All the assistant manager said was "Sorry". I went over to knock on the tanning room door and a female employeee immediately ran up to my boyfriend and I and strated yelling at us that we weren't allowed to knowck on the door. I went back to the front desk and asked why they were not doing anything about it and the assistant manager informed me that it is not their RESPONSIBILITY to monitor the tanning beds. (????? then whose is it?) The female employee told me to stop raising my voice and continued to scream at my boyfriend and I when we informed her that we were being rude. She told me to "shut up" and get over it because I wouldn't be allowed to tan anyway. She caused a huge scene and was so unprofessional it was disgusting. She then gave us both the MIDDLE FINGER as we walked out of the gym. When my boyfriend went back in to ask for her name and the corporate number she said that we were just going to complain because we were discriminating against her because she is a minority. I teach seventh grade in the South Bronx (at a 100% non-white Catholic school) and am definitely not racist by any means. When I called upon arriving home the asisstant manager hung up on me three times and refused to tell me when the manager was coming in. How is this ok for a paying customer to be treated like this. I have been going to Planet Fitness for 6 years and recently upgraded to the black card membership specifically for tanning privelages. And there is no corporate number?????????? I will not rest until the female employee is reprimanded (at least) or fired. Someone has to do something about all these complaints!

Broken Air conditioning
I have been a member of Planet fitness for 3 years. I have switched from one location to another. I started out in the Springfield MA location, then Enfield CT, and now Delmar. I would never say they are a top of the line gym, but it is clean enough and quiet enough for the money they charge. If I was paying more than $20 a month I could see complaining about old machinery or lack of variety, ect. The fact of the matter is that you are getting what you pay for: a small gym with the basics.
When I started going to the albany location, i was pleased. It was quiet, clean, and everyone seemed nice enough. The warm weather has recently set in. I kept mentioning to my friend how hot it seemed in the gym. At first I dismissed it and assumed it was a natural reaction to working out. But I noticed the thermostat in the gym one day. I snuck over and read it. The thermostat said it was 78 degrees in the gym. I dismissed it and thought, well maybe they aren't ready to turn the AC on yet. I then decided to go tanning, something I don't normally do, but I thought since I had a wedding coming up, it might be nice to get a little color. I got in, lied down and after 5 minutes it got so hot in the room i almost passed out. I ran out and ran to my car.
I went back the next day to discuss the issue. They told me that the AC was broken and that they were not sure when it would be fixed. I told everyone I knew about this. They too started to complain seperatly. The gym told us all the same thing. They told us we could go to any of the other planet fitnesses if we wanted, since they all have working AC. My friend made the point that she was not about to drive an extra 30 minutes to work out because the gym was unwilling to fix a fundamental problem with their service. They told her "sorry our hands are tied."
We are now looking for a way to either quit without being charged or some how make them more apologetic about the issue.
