SCAM
I received a phone call from this company saying that I won a $1, 000 shopping Spree. They then went on to discuss a magazine offer. I was not at all interested in the offer, but wanted the details on what i won. The next thing I knew was that i agreed to pay $40 a month for 7 magazines. I proceeded to look up this information online and found out it was a big scam so called them back to cancel. Regardless of how many times you call you get the same man who also happens to be the Supervisors. They will not let me cancel because they sent advanced payment to the magazine clearing house to get my magazines. They processed that extememly fast. They wouldn't give me the number of the clearing house and they will not let me cancel.

FRAUD
I recently was scammed and complained to the Atlanta section of BBB and had everything straightened out. The BBB contacted Reading America and they cancelled my subscription and gave me my money back. It can be frustrating trying to cancel this stupid subscription! I spent hours on the phone with Reading America and they were very rude to me.

File a report with the BBB Atlanta at http://atlanta.bbb.org/consumers/

If it worked for me it can work for you!!

more harassing calls
Another harassing phone call today. This company calls from a number 770-518-4089. When you call this number back it goes to messaging system that says thanks for calling your magazine company. You can prompt for a operator but when you do no one picks up the phone it just goes back to the same initial message. They once again keep threatening to report me to a credit agency. When i asked for an actual location of the company this guy only wanted to give me a P.O. box in atlanta georgia. When i tried to ask questions about the company and why they have so many complaints Mr. Keith Mitchell just transferred me to his boss who only wanted to repeat the same thing back to me. They replayed the intial conversation back to me which is nothing more then me saying yes to the questions about the offer. It still doesnt say anything about this being a legal verbal contract. Still have not received a shopping spree. They are now telling me this is thru a different company and they are not responsible for that. That same customer service number they claimed you can call back for 10am to 6 pm still goes to someone voicemail eventhough they claim there are customer representatives you can speak with. O and lets not forget the constant transferring you to one person after another and how none of your questions get answered. Ii will be contacting the Governor's Office of Consumer Affairs as suggested. I canceled the original card that they had my information to. I will not be paying anything to them.

Send your complaints to:
If you have been scammed by Reading America,
Please submit a letter explaining your experience to:
Governor's Office of Consumer Affairs
2 MLK Dr SE Ste 356
Atlanta, GA 30334
Also, please use reference #267056. The BBB does not investigate companies. Reading America is not a member of the BBB. This government agency is the one who will investigate. The more complaints they receive, besides my own, the more they will have to go after Reading America.
If you have specifics, such as rude operators, asking about canceling and not being told you can, these are two violations of the law for telemarketers in Georgia. Please help my case by sending your own experiences.

fraudulent/scam
This is my third entry for today being 1/19/11 I already filed a formal complaint aganist Reading America with the BBB of Atlanta.
I attempted to call back Erica from Reading America at the number she provided me which is 877-855-4571 EXT. 2020 and again rec'd an automated voice telling me that I need to call during regular business hours between 8- 10pm EST. I then for the hell of it tried 877-855-1115 a menu came up. No identifying company name just a menu i immediately pressed 1 for the operator whose name is Linda. I asked to speak with Erica at Ext 2020 since she has been leaving me several messages to call her. I immediately was given to the manager despite me requesting to speak with this Erica person. A Mr. Russell came on the line and abruptly asked me my name, I told him I wanted to speak with Erica at Ext 2020 and he insisted that he is the manager and he would help me but he needs my name I provided my name and he began to blurt out a bunch of false claims he then told me that my account was in collections because I did not pay for the Jan 2011 magazines (8) that i did not order of 44.94..I told him he is not going to get paid and i did not authorize this order and reported my credit card lost and i will not be paying for something i do not want...I then went to state about what i found when i looked up reading america online and he hung up on me...This company is fraud and so are the workers I hope the BBB of Atlanta does something about this. My account is in collections for alleged 1 month payment of 44.94 for 8 magazines i did not order. They are insane there and even though I can not afford to call GA. I just may call the BBB today on this one...I will not be treated like this by a place of losers and immoral people...Lindapenwny!

harrassing
I just wrote a complaint on this site about Reading America. I went back on the internet to see more about this company. All i could find was Reading America i page with nothing whatsoever useful about it. no address, no list of magazines, no phone numbers, no place to call and speak with a service representative. I am 'fortunate' that i have this Erica's number on my phone and it is 877-855-4571 EXT. 2020. I just attempted to call that number more than once and I get an automated vm stating to call during regular business hours which is starting at 10am it is now 10:30am...I am so pissed off and angry right now that i pity this Erica person and I will not be threatened..Not by some place that has a i page useless information site on the web..BAD BUSINESS! Do not even wish to call it a business it is a scam and every complaint I have read on this forum regarding Reading America is 100% correct. I am trying the number again just to see if someone answers. Then i am going to the BBB on this one ----

scamming customers
Good day it is 1/19/11 and I received a letter in the mail back in Nov. 2010 stating that i authorized 6 magazines to be delivered to me monthly and my credit card? would be billed 49.90/month for an extended period of time and then i would get this wonderful free gift from a sister company a promise of money. In this letter was listed 6 magazines that i have no interest in whatsoever so i called. The first number which was on the top left hand corner of this invoice was not the Reading America it was a universities number so i called again & the rep. stated that they are the company that would be providing the 'reward' for your subscription through Reading America. I am irrate. I finally received Reading America's phone number after getting very assertive on the phone with this person that did not work for Reading A. He told me that he would cancel the "bonus" and did give me the phone number. called that number to say i do not want these magazines and i can not afford these magazines, and i would not subscribe to these issues if i wanted to. I was belittled, harrassed and even was told that there is a recording of the whole process that was MY VOICE stating that i accepted the offer through Reading America..The rep for reading america acutally played a voice recording...? When he finally came back on the line I said what kind of BS is this. First that is not me and second what kind of company tapes there interactions for authorization for subscriptions to magazines..He would not let up and I said I did not authorize this and i do not care whose voice is on that machine I want this transaction off of my credit card? He continued to harrass me finally I hung up and called the credit card and was informed the best thing to do is to report that card lost. She also looked at my acc't and stated that at that time the 49+dollars for " magazines" has not been made on that credit card. Now I am getting non stop phone calls from a Erica at Reading America at 877-855-4571 ext. 2020. I am going to call her this am. This company has got to be stopped. We live in the US and no one should be forced or harrassed into purchasing stupid uninteresting magazines and promised a bonus if one does and then getting harrassed when you go to cancel. They literally argue back no matter how calm one tries to stay. I am going to the BBB after this. I will call this Erica at Reading America because she has left multiple vm on my TracFone..this is a SCAM & they need to be shut down and fast. I was pleasantly surprised when I decided to look up Reading America online and the first thing that came up was this complaint board and 2 pages of complaints on this company.

It's fraudulence and
I had a call months back from a guy saying that we are from Reading America and you got a $1000 shopping spree.
They kind of lured me saying this and made me get subscribed for magazines and at that time I asked if I can cancel my subscription if I don't like the magazines, they said I can do that . When I got subscribed they took my Credit card information and said that I will not be charged till I get my first set of magazines. I didn't receive the magazine's till 3 months after the subscription. They didn't mention that when they talked to me. Few days 3 or 4 days later I received a mail from them about the subscription which says that I have been subscribed for 4 years and each monthly payment is around $45 which was around $22 when they told me on the call at the time of subscription. They also charged my credit card for $45 the next day or so as soon as I got the mail. I was busy with my job and I couldn't go through the mails the next week when I looked into the mail and saw the 4 year subscription and so . I called them and asked to cancel the subscription. They said I cannot cancel it if I want to unsubscribe I have pay the amount I think around $380 which I don't remember exactly. I talk to them may be couple of more time when they called me, I only told them that I want to get rid of the subscription and I don't want to pay for the magazines which I didn't even get. After 3 months I started receiving the magazines, I thought of returning them but not sure where mail them back. I didn't open a single magazine I lost faith with lies to me and didn't even bothered about. I stocked all the magazines in box which are of no interest to me now. They frequently sent me the letters threatening me that they have handed this to a third party collection agency and they will contact me. This letters went around for 5 months I was fed up with this letters and I had my personal and job pressures and didn't respond to the mails because they will be saying the same thing that I need to pay the amount for getting unsubscribed. Now yesterday I got call from some Collection agency saying that they will be handling my case and will collect the total amount on behave of Reading America. I asked them to help me to get contact some manager from Reading America, they transfered the call and at last I was able to talk to one of the manager . He offered me some installment payment options which is not ok to me. I asked them to cancel the long before and it was there fault that they didn't inform me on the call about cancellation steps and also the long 4 years subscription. The manager said that he got the whole conversation recorded at the time of subscription and said that I agreed in the call for 4 years subscription. I wanted to go through the recorded call but he said that he couldn't find it. I never believe this kind of fraud happens here in USA I actually wanted to try the magazine but they made me answer lot questions which I can't even recall all of them were IVR questions on the call. On the basis of that that are threatening me now.
Is there a solution for this, can I open a case against that company which I see as a fraudulence one. Please someone help me in this regard. I lost my job it is going to end on Dec'30th. Have to look for another Job. Got my own personal problem and these RA people are frustrating me I don't know what happens to me ...with such kind of unnecessary tensions and threads in my mind.

Thanks,

Rakesh, VA.

They offered me the 1000 gift card to suscribe magazines. I was gona commit to the product but I told them not to withdraw untill a certain time. And they didn't listen. They took the money out anyway. No consideration for the consumer. They told me not to worry they wouldn't take anything out. They just called me and I told them I aint paying them nothing and they told me to enjoy my bill cuz its going to collections and hung up!!! They can do whatever they won't win with me!!! Damn scam artist. Never BELIEVE what they say... Hang up on them.
