My husband and I spoke with one of the Rentacar agents via telephone on June 21 to inquire about booking an automatic car in France for two weeks. During this conversation he informed the agent that I, his wife, am 22 years of age and asked whether this would affect the total price of the rental. To this question the agent assured him that because I was older than 21 there would be no problem and no additional charges. My husband also asked the agent whether there was total coverage for the vehicle from collision, damage, and theft included in the final price, and to this the agent again vigorously assured my husband that the quoted price included all coverage. The price quoted to us was $1024.57 CDN for a Citroen C4 Automatic (from June 24 - July 8) and was charged to his VISA card on June 21, 2011. We were told to expect a confirmation email with all of our details and this never came.
This morning we went to pick up the vehicle from the Nimes Garon Airport in France and were informed that we needed to pay an additional 350, 00 Euros because I am under the age of 25 AND we did not have full coverage for collision in the price paid. We spoke with a representative with Auto Escape (the two companies work together) to rectify the situation, and expected in the very least that they would redeem 350, 00 Euros to my husband's VISA card because this gross misinformation was utterly their companies fault, however, they said they could do no such thing. Instead they lamely offered us a 50% discount the next time we rented a car. We chose to have the full amount paid rebated to us. Hours later another representative with Rentacar phoned to inform us they were going to deduct a 10 Euro penalty from the rebate because of the cancellation. Again we were told we would receive an email regarding the cancellation, and we have again failed to receive such an email - despite the fact that my husband confirmed it twice.
This behavior is totally unprofessional and unacceptable in the customer service industry. It is shocking that they would not honor the amount quoted and charged to us, and it is totally inconceivable that they would deduct a further amount once we canceled because of their negligence and misinformation.
Think twice about using these companies, they obviously will say anything to make a sale, and don't care about their customers.
