unfair hiring practices
This rite-aid store have been in this location for over 11 years and have only hired 2- african americans, with ony 1- african american employed to date and has been the only african american at this location for the past 3-1/2 years not to mention I wasn't hired off the street but through a merge from another store, other than that, I would't even be employed at rite aid, as african americans do apply at this location and there has been openings with in the past year or less and rite-aid at this location, 0875 corner of lovers lane and sunset Blvd. steubenville ohio, they refuse to hire african americans. Believe you me, being the only african american at rite aid is 'no picnic' its very discriminatory as I can name a few incidents that has occured with mysef as I am going to continue to keep notes, date of incidents, and copies of my schedule to prove my point when I file my complaint with higher authorities in the near future. white people are hired at this rite-aid even when the position isn't posted to the public, there's jobs in this city "but" only at certain stores and certain positions for african americans. This is called unfair hiring practices as all jobs should be posted to the public, this issue has been brought to rite-aids human resourse dept. and still no fair results.

misleading sales
I was recently perusing the endcaps in my local Rite-Aid Pharmacy. This is where the store traditionally puts their specials and sale items. It's all designed to catch the consumer's eye for purchase.
On one of them, I saw this sign: CLEARANCE 50% OFF STICKERED ITEMS ONLY
This was one of those yellow sticky type of ads that the store puts into the frame and can remove easily. So I looked at the items, and of course, all of them are stickered. Naturally.
So I choose one, a battery-operated fountain which was stickered at $9.99. When I brought it to the register, it should have rung up at $5.00. Of course, it doesn't. I tell the cashier it was on an endcap that was labeled clearance, 50% off. He calls the manager. She runs off to check. I go after her to tell her where to look.
When we arrived at the endcap, she immediately pulls off the yellow sticky and put it in her pocket. Then she tells me that there was no sale. Mind you, I watched her put the clearance sticky in her pocket. I asked her what exactly was the point of having that sticker that was now in her pocket on that endcap for if not one item on that shelf was on sale? She hemmed and hawed and said "Well, nothing there is on sale. Nothing I see is stickered." (As I said before, everything was stickered with HUGE stickers.)
I told her that what her store was doing was a bait and switch type of ploy, and no matter how anyone looked at it, it was illegal. I explained to her that she couldn't just remove this sticker in front of me and tell me there wasn't a sale. She told me she wasn't going to sell me something from that shelf at 50% just because I saw that sticker. Mind you, she didn't even say the sticker was misplaced!
I told her to take the sticker out of her pocket so I could see it again. She did. I then took it and put it back on the shelf and took a picture of it with my cell phone. I told her I was sending that picture to the state's consumer agency for illegal retail practices in the D.A.'s office and thanked her for her cooperation.
Her mouth dropped open. Instead of apologizing, or offering to sell me the goods to make her store look good, she ran to her store phone. She called her manager to tell him what had just happened. Apparently, the situation made her rather nervous.
I see Rite-Aid Pharmacy doesn't teach its employees that the customer is always right. Nor do they engage in proper pricing of their goods. Apparently they also use false advertising on their shelving as a tactic for more sales. I shudder to think of the senior citizens that shop there. How many of them actually check to see that they are being rung up correctly? Or how about those people that have learning disabilities and cannot quickly check the tab as it's being rung by the cashier?
I have seen many items not priced on Rite-Aid's shelves before, and have had to have price checks done. This is often done in sales bins. Hmmmmmm...
This is not a store I shop anymore, only in an emergency.

injury
Rite-Aid Bakersfield CA
In Dec 2008 around 7PM I was at a recently opened Rite-Aid Location in California and upon exiting the store, stepping from a very brightly lit store into a very dark walk way and parking lot, I tripped over an unmarked curb and fell. First off I was very lucky that I “only” injured my right ankle and my pride, because even after people pointed out to employees that there was someone hurt laying in walkway, Rite-Aid employees huddled in the doorway just gawking. I am in my sixties and they had no idea whether I was having a heart attack, fell or what happened, G-d forbid they should have come outside and checked. Now about 5-7 minutes had gone by, my right ankle was the size of a cantaloupe and throbbing. My friend, inside the store, had finally completed her purchases, saw me and came rushing over, grabbing for her cell phone. About the same time a very sweet couple stopped, as luck would have it she was an ortho nurse, took one look at my ankle and insisted her husband scoop me up off the walkway and they drove me to the hospital. Rite-Aid employees waited till I was in the truck before one of them gingerly approached with clipboard in hand to take down information.
I was appalled by the lack of concern shown by Rite-Aid employees and the time it took to come to the aid of an injured customer. Rite-Aid is a national company surely they must have policies in place and employee training on how to handle accidents and injuries sustained by customers. If that’s it, I am not impressed and it does not say much for Rite-Aid.
As it turned out I did not break my right ankle (which actually would have been better in the long run) but literally shredded the ligaments around the ankle bones. Eventually it required 6 month of physical therapy to get some range of motion back, when you are on your sixties you don’t heal as well and I still have residual effects of the injury. It has altered many aspects of my life, I am no longer able to run, still walk every day but cannot go the distance because my right ankle becomes painfully inflamed. It has certainly has altered the way I approach my yoga training, certain poses have become too painful and I am either not able to do them or have to compensate. Driving has become increasingly difficult and painful.
Now comes the good part: Rite-Aid told my attorney (I think I made a bad choice there, too) they would settle for $4, 500.00 (that is four thousand five hundred dollars), which does not even cover my medical expenses even without the attorney’s cut taken out.
Due to my husband’s long term illness and medical expenses, I had lost my home, car……….everything. I was living in a shelter, going back to school to finish my degree and I had just interviewed for a position as a live-in assistant that could be worked around my classes. Because of this injury I had to withdraw from the position and had to modify my class schedule to accommodate physical therapy sessions. I am about two semesters behind with classes, still stuck in the shelter and Rite-Aid does not even want to pay my medical bills. Yes, Rite-Aid certainly cares about seniors………………… as long as they get your money first you could die outside their store and they will just huddle and watch……….
