On July 25, 2009 we recieved a phone call from Road America Motor Club asking us to provide a service for one of their members. The job was a 38 foot motor coach with tandem rear axle that had been parked for an extended peroid of time. I explained to the dispatcher that we do not tow motor homes for motor clubs and she asked me to make an exception, indicating that this person had been stranded for a period of time. I told her what the rate was and she said that the member was fully covered and they would pay whatever the charges were. I accepted a PO# and prceded on the call.
Most of the information that I found out was after I arrived at the scene. Along the side of the road at 9:00 PM I started to prep this unit for towing. This includes blocking the front tires up on blocks, so that you may get the tow bar under the unit without damaging the unit, adding frame risers to the under reach to pick up, and removing the drive shaft. This takes considerable time therefore time was charged for this. Also during the time that the drive shaft was being removed to prevent damaged to the unit a driver was injured due to pressure being left on the drive shaft. The unit had to be followed by a emergency veehicle since the lights would not work on it and a place to hook the remote lights on it was not available.,
Today, September 18th @ 3:00 PM, after numerous calls to find out why payment had not been made I received the call from Road America stating that they would not pay the amount charged but a reduced rate because they thought that it was higher than other towers charged. Amazing that they were not a tower available the night that the member broke down. They reduced the amount of the invoice by 39%. This is the second time that they have pulled this stunt on my company but it will be the last time. I have advised all of my drivers and dispatchers not to take any calls from this Road America Motor Club
Our company has been in business since 1931 and we refuse to associate ourselves from such under handed companies like Road America Motor Club. My advise to people that want to join a motor club, do so only if you do not have a working relationship with a reputable tow company, but never associate yourself with Road America Motor Club. If you are a member you may find yourself waiting on a tow company for very long and extended periods of time. If you are a provider don't plan on getting paid in a timely manner or for the amount of the invoice.
