No trust
1 1/2yrs ago: toilet backing up, called some random plumbing company with reasonable prices to deal with it. The man came with shoddy equipment, snaking for two hours accomplishing nothing.
$140 for nothing.
Next, we call Roto Rooter, tell them about the first guy. They rush right over with a hydro-jet, blast those pipes, and viola! Clear flushing toilets! They now have our trust!
Fast forward about a year and a half...same problem, obviously roots (both companies said so). We automatically call Roto Rooter.
This time we get a guy reeking of alcohol who drags in the same equipment as the first company from a year and a half ago, snakes for 30 minutes, says it's not going to work, my pipes are collapsed, and maybe we could get our insurance company to pay for the "definitely over $1000" work (says he'll pad the bill and kick us back our deductible) and gives us his cell phone number. No sign of the hydro-jet, which could easily have been attempted in the remaining half-hour we had paid for.
We call and complain. Response? Sure we can come back and try the hydro-jet, but you'll have to pay for another visit. Acccckkkk!

bad bad company
Roto Rooter not only did not fix a slow drain problem, they had left damage and will not acknowledge or offer to fix. Monday July 12th, Roto Rooter had been contacted via their website to service a slow bath tub drain. The service was scheduled for Friday, July 16th between the hours of 12-5pm. The first plumber that came out tried for approximately 15 minutes to fix the drain but claimed he had a "crease" in his drain snake and another plumber with "more experience" would have to be dispatched out. I took a picture of what this plumber left behind which was approximately 2 inches of dirty black smelly water left in the tub that was not draining at all. This was also all over the walls and floor. The second plumber showed up about a hour later and tried to work on the drain for about the same amount of time and gave up too. (The switch plate for the pipes is in my kitchen...they didn't look for this and I wasn't aware until another plumber from a different company found it.) Before Roto Rooter showed up it was a slow drain. Now I was left with a mess that wouldn't go down at all. I also noted that my bath mat which was also ruined had been moved around, which in turn ripped up the enamel on the bottom of the tub. The plumber tried to cover that up by placing the mat back on a spot where the enamel was now missing. This piece of the enamel was nowhere to be found so it was obvious it was taken with the person. A 2nd company came out after service hours for a emergency plumbing repair. This was fixed the first time correctly by 1 plumber. He did have to work a few hours fixing the pipes behind the wall and said that Roto Rooter knew this...they just didn't want to do it. When Roto Rooter was contacted by email about the damage they (Pat Swanson-Customer Satisfactions Manager) said a manager would be in touch. Dave Harris called and asked to see the pictures again which had already been sent to the corporate office. No response after this. A second letter was sent to the above mentioned and Jeff Schnabel (General Manager-Denver) called and asked me why I was still contacting the Corporate Office with this complaint. I have saved this voice mail. His call was returned and his response was "What do you want from Roto Rooter." I said for starters an apology and also the fact my tub is damaged to be acknowledged. His remark was "Sorry from Roto Rooter...is that good enough?" I have saved this recording as well for future use. Roto Rooter acts like they care about the customer but when it comes down to it, they don't. Consumer BEWARE!

not standing behind there work and over looking problems
we have delt with roto rooter for 25 years, earlier this year we called because our kitchen sink was clogged. They replaced some under the sink pipes and fed a snake in the line. This cause the snake to create a new hole in the pipe at the boot end that they had done before. we did not know this, we had been feeding water into our craw space for the past 6 months. after fighting with the flys and the smell I found the problem. I called my local roter rooter and had set up for them to correct the problem. after 3 hours trying to get the work approved they finely left and said I had to get approved for credit in order for them to fix the pipe. He had to have up front money to preform the work. so I spend another night with the smell and. This work is farmed out to anyone willing to do the work. I don't speek spanish and there for the work isn't done, I probley should have ask for his green card. I did call another plumber and they said they would be here in the morning to fix our problems, no questions ask. I suggest calling dan King

over priced/rip offs/poor work!
called roto rooter because water was backing into the house from the toilet and tub! when tech shows up he tells me my main line is clogged and he needs to snake it. ok no big deal right? WRONG! he tells me it will be $225.00 to snake it and an extra $125.00 to dig the hole to get to the pipe. i ended up digging the hole to save myself $125.00 and he snaked it about 85-90 feet out cleared the clog and set me up with an appointment the following tuesday to have a camera run through the pipe and see what was going on. tuesday came around and the camera guy never showed up and 4 days later the pipe clogs back up! so i call roto rooter about 12pm on a sunday they tell me a tech will be out in an hour..doesnt show until 4pm! as soon as he gets there he tells me he's going to come back in the morning because it was drizziling and he didnt want to get him or his machine wet!!? i convince him to stick around a minute to see if the drizzle stops and it did 5 minutes later. 25 minutes later he tells me he ran his snake out twice 100 feet both times and couldnt clear the clog! the next day the camera man finally shows up to run the camera and of course couldnt see anything because the pipe is filled with water. he tells me i need my whole main line replaced and gives me an estimate of $5000.00 (yes thats 5 thousand dollars)! so the next day i went to home depot and rented a snake for $52.00 and ran the snake out 85 or 90 ft and i hit the clog!! after 5 minutes of toying with it i got the clog out and water is draining fine and havent had a problem since! THANK GOD! but do yourself a favor and stay away from ROTO ROOTER!!

Scam
I wakedup in the morning to find our main sewer line was cloaked up, i watched Undercover Boss last week and though to myself, the CEO is such a nice guy, Roto-Rooter cant be that bad... well, i was wrong, i called in and got a appointment for a free consultation, what a waste of time. Jose from Mexico came and asked me where the main acess to the sewer line is outside the house, i played stupid standing right next to it telling him i dont know anything about plumming. So Jose inspected the house from all sides and under telling me i have no connector outside, so he needs to dig up the front to place a connector, $1100, nice, after i told him thats too expensive Jose, he said he could acess it from teh roof vent, for only $419. Well, after he finished i had him write that all down, onle finished i took him outside and showed him teh acess point to the sewer, he kind of looked stupid asking me what the *** i am thinking setting him up. I told him to wait. I went into my house taking the old Rifle i have hanging in teh living room, not loaded and disabled. You havent see a plummer running that fast ever.
So yeah, bottom line, Roto Rooter is consistent of a buncha thiefs who will rip off grandma and anyone who is stupid enough to believe they are here to help.
I am from Germany, over there we handle things different, this company would not survive a week over there.

The service man made no attempt to solve our problem. He got out of his truck saying he couldn't help us. He charged us $89.00 for nothing. His name was David.

Price & Equipment
Residential house drain needed blockage cleaned out. Called Roto Rooter at about noon. Wasn't told how many down the list I was. Didn't arrive until after 5:00. Worked for a bit over an hour, and told me he went in 105 feet, which was the limit of his equipment, and couldn't clear the block. He called for a pressure water jet truck for the next day, and cut my $308 bill to $180. What a bargain. Next day, the pressure water jet truck showed with a camera. Cleared the line easily. No roots, just buildup plus what the first truck loosened. Charge was another $550, for a total of $730 for a simple blockage that actually flowed, but very slowly. It turned out that it did not need the force of a pressure jet, only a mechanical router that would actually reach the city line. City sewer easement is on the other side of the street, so line distance from cleanout access to city line is about 140 feet. Trucks apparently don't carry that cable length. This is old residential. Submitted a survey complaint online to Roto Rooter, which was of course ignored. Talk about severely gouged because they don’t carry the equipment to handle residential lot sizes, and they don't tell you that when they see the location, either, of course.

fake $25 gift cards
Used roto rooter over a year ago. After this they sent out a $25 gift card for future use. In october of 09 I had a leaky pipe under a bathroom sink. I called them to fix it. At the time I mentioned the gift certificate and was told it could be used. The day of the repair after being presented a bill for 173.88 I presented the gift card. At this time the plumber looked befuddled and said he needed to go back to his truck. He returned with a bill showing the same bottom line. The labor went up from $159 to 184 then the $25 gift card was netted out leaving me with the exact same bill $173.88. Of course I wasn't going to argue with the plumber in my home. I paid the bill and called the office. Of course they were all apologetic but I have been chasing this $25 for exactly 3 monthes now. I have been repeatedly lied to by them stating that a check was coming from the home office. This round and round has occured no less then 3 times with messages being left stating that the "check is in the mail". They are nothing more then a bunch of liars. DO NOT USE ROTO ROOTER. Amazing to me that they would risk their reputation for $25. Of course you might ask why the $25 is so important to me. Its called principle!!!

Flooded our house
Dealing with the Roto Rooter in Northern Virginia has been an absolute nightmare. We called them to fix a faulty water heater and the technician said we just needed to fix a part. We trusted his judgment, had the part fixed, thought all was well. Wrong - water kept leaking without our knowledge until a few days later we noticed signs of water damage on the ceilings and carpet of 3 floors of our townhouse (water heater is on 3rd floor). Called Roto Rooter back and this time the production manager, Ron Shifflett, came along with the technician. Immediately the manager said the technician should have put in a new water heater in the first place and told us the admin office would contact us to straighten the issue out. We said, fine, they put in a new water heater, and left after getting our money.
Now we were left to deal with the damages to our home, spending a LOT of $$ to dry carpets/dry walls/ceilings, painting, putting in new carpet - a complete nightmare financially and otherwise. And we NEVER heard back from Roto Rooter regarding the mistake they made - no compensation for the botched job whatsoever, they won't take our calls or answer our emails. Tried reaching their General Manager in Northern Virginia, Calvin Williams without so much as an acknowledgment. When we finally heard back from the Production Manager, Ron Shifflett, he says the reason for the leak was the water heater pan was too small - not even a sensible argument - and refused to acknowledge what he himself said while doing the job, which was that the severity of the leak was the technician's fault for not replacing the water heater when we called them the first time.
If you are in the Northern Virginia area, do yourself a favor and DO NOT use Roto Rooter. If their technicians mess something up they will deny it, take your money and run. Don't trust them. I learned the hard way.

Doesn't stand by their work
I payed for a professional Plumber to install a toilet and within 5 months it was leaking. I called the same company back to fix it and the charged me the full price again. I called the owner and she basically told me that after 30 days they could care less that the quality of their workmanship is bad.
