Sears Canada Reviews

Poor Customer Service
Sears closed the repair depot in British Columbia's Capital City, Victoria, so all appliances must be sent to Vancouver for repairs. It takes about 3 weeks to hand in your appliance at the Victoria store and have it returned. Before they will return the repaired appliance to their Victoria store (not to you but to their own store) they demand payment in full. They won't send the invoice first, so you have no idea what they did - they just say pay up and we'll send the appliance to the store in Victoria where you can pick it up. They refuse to allow you to go to the victoria store to see the invoice and then pay. After paying for repairs which clearly include shipping, they won't even deliver it to you. There is a lot of competition for appliance sales in Victoria, and this is the las appliance I will buy from Sears.

sub-standard appliances
From April to August we took delivery of 4 Jenn Air downdraft ranges. Each of the first three deliveries presented an appliance that had ill-fitting oven doors. Because of the slant of the door, the seal was not adequate which resulted in a heat loss at the top end of the door. The only feedback we received from Sears and/or Jenn Air was that over time the seal material would compress and the door would eventually straighten out. The fourth appliance was delivered with a proper fitting door (yeah!) However, right before my eyes, the Sears carriers dropped it from the back of their vehicle onto the ground. There were a number of visible breakages (knobs etc) and who knows what damage was sustained internally. The carrier wanted us to accept the delivery and they would send a repair technician around to fix it. When we refused to take delivery of the damaged appliance we were informed that they (Sears) would not be re-ordering a stove for us. Needless to say we didn't go back for yet another assault on our senses.

incomprehensible pricing
In the recent Oct 24, 2009-June 18, 2010 sale catalogue, I discovered on page 86E (a small insert specific to Rob McIntosh china & crystal shops) article G - 'McIntosh' set of 2 watering globes. Much to my astonishment the retail price you have on this item is $39.99 - the identical product (right down to the colour of the glass globes) is sold in Canadian Tire for $9.99 (set of 2) or at Giant Tiger for $8.99 (set of 2). How do you justify such an outrageous pricing difference?

As a 30 year customer of Sears Canada this truly instills a jaundiced view of your fair pricing practices.

Thank you.

Refregirator
In August of 2006 we purchased a refregirator from Sears Canada. This GE model we found later was made in Mexico. This was a $2700. plus taxes purchase. It is the model with a freezer with 2 doors opening at the upper level and the freezer at as a bottom drawer.

Three months after our purchase, we had the right door replaced due to the top latch being broken. Another six months later we had the left door replaced for the same reason.
This past year, we had to get the both doors seals replaced due to the fact that the temperature for both the refregirator and freezer was and is still fluctuating by sometimes 10 degrees withing a few hours and this without any particular reason although it seems that the warmer the temperature outside...the warmer inside. Or sometimes for no reason that we can figure.
While the doors seals were replaced, the service person told us that the thermostast also needed to be replaced and this was done one week later.
Some foods on the top shelve frequently freezes. When I asked the Sears Service person, I was told that this is what happens caused by the freezer being at the bottom?
My husband and I are now considering taking that refrigirator and painting it Yellow...after putting it outside on the curb for everyone to see...On the doors would be a Great Big Sign stating "THIS REFREGIRATOR WAS PURCHASED @ SEARS CANADA...WHICH DOES NOT STAND BY THEIR PRODUCTS"

Service/ Warranty
Purchased a LG Front Load Washing Machine (WM2677HWM) and LG Front Load Dryer (DLE5977WM) in 2006. Hadn't had a problem until now. Beginning of September 2009, my washing machine would no longer work (error code LE, according to the owners manual - unplug the power plug. call for service).

I called the Canadian 1-800-469-4663 on Sept 08, 2009 after the long weekend. Spoke with a gentlemen there that could barely speak English, went through all the details set up an appointment date for Thursday, September 18, 2009. Asked if there was anything early told no, but would put me on a short list.

I have not heard back with a scheduled time. Have since called half a dozen times, given service order # told the repair man would be out. And every time I call back to confirm, they are conveniently overbooked. Have had it re-booked every day, and it's now Saturday, September 19, 2009 and as usual OVERBOOKED again.

Then they tell me I have no maintenance Agreement, I have the certificate in my hand.

I am I suppose to go get a rock and wash my clothes in the pond in my backyard? apparently to the supervisors at the Canadian Sears Major Appliance Parts and Service this is perfectly acceptable.

I am now going else where to buy a BRAND NEW washing machine and will never gain in my life buy anything form SEARS again, and am canceling my account with them.

bulginh mattress
Bought a SearsO-Pedic mattress in late Jan./09. In July Furn. Medix came down and my mattress on one side is bulging out that your sheets don't fit properly. They told me I needed a new bar across the middle of the frame because this one was bent. The same day I and my husband went to Sears and purchased a new roller frame. I had sears mattress on before the new one and it was fine so nobody asked me about the frame when I bought it or when the men delivered it and put it on my bed. I've shopped at Sears since 1964. I called the 1-800 number and was told the warranty was void. I told them I didn't receive a warranty from when I purchased it or it wasn't on the mattress. This is a default in the mattress with the bulging and having it for only 6 mos. and I think I should have gotten a new one. It's not my fault I didn't get a warranty. We are seniors. Thank you

poor workmanship/lack of repairs
I had the shingles on my mansard roof replaced one year ago by Sears Canada. The roofers they used (RDF 2000) did a poor job and were extremely rude to boot. The shingles began falling off within 5 days of installation, caulking was either incomplete or they used far too much on the flashing, some shingles were held in place with 7 visible nails, the rows were crooked or improperly spaced. The inspector agreed that repairs were needed and the roofers have now returned at least 6 times. Still the job is not complete. The top row of shingles appear to be held in place merely by the flashing. Needless to say, this is ineffective and the shingles are beginning to slip out of place. I have called Customer Service in Montreal and have yet to receive a date as to when this job will be corrected. I have a 5 year warranty, one year of which has expired, but it seems not to be worth the paper upon which it is printed. I am preparing to retire and plan to sell my home. However, I suspect I may have problems due to the roofing issue. Needless to say, I am complaining wherever I can and have no intentions of ever entering a Sears store. I am also ensuring that I inform anyone I can in order that I cost Sears as much business as is possible. Ultimately, I may have to have another roofer fix the problem and then take Sears to court.

Damage during delivery
Bought $6500 worth of appliances and paid for delivery in Oct 2008. During delivery of the stove, the delivery company cracked both sides of the counter top. No resolution as of yet. We were told to go after the delivery company (we did not hire them, they are sub contractors for Sears) then Sears told us to make a claim thru our Home insurance. Yeash! Any ideas? Do not buy any thing from Sears EVER!!!

Stolen Ellipitical
In December 2007 we purchased from sears an expensive Ellipitical trainner. In November 2008 with 11 months of use it developed a bad grinding noise in the spinning wheel weight location. We contacted Sears service desk and were told that they normally would have someone come by but because we are in Yellowknife NWT that we would have to take it to the local Depot for shipping out for repair. We did as instructed. In LateJanunary 2009 we started to inquire where the unit was. After several calls and talking to the owner of the local depot we were informed that it had indead been repaired and shipped back but was damaged in shipping and had to be returned once again for repair. This went on 3 times with it being damaged in shipping each time and returned. The last time was in March 2009. After inquiring where it was then we were told it was repaired and waiting shipping back north as at the time the winter road across the Mackenzie River was out and it would be a month or untill the Ferry was back in operation. After impatiently waiting since March and with multiple phone / email inquiries we have gotten no farther in getting our Ellipitical back. Each phone call bring appologies and promises to get back right away to us. No one ever does. I phoned once and asked what it was going to take to get this resolved and mentioned if maybe a legal case would get some action, I was proptly hung up on. I keep requesting that they just ship a new one or refund my money to buy another and all I get is stalling.
I guess in short all I can say is DONT buy Sears, They have no Customer service. You cant even get past the service desk to talk to someone in charge.
I am presently researching how to take them to small claims court as I cant seem to get any where in the regular system.

Unauthorized charges
We discovered our food in the freezer thawed on April 4/09; called an electrician on Apr 6 who told us the compressor was gone ; on April 8th before taking the freezer to the dump called Sears who advised that only the seal around the top of the freezer would be covered under warranty. We found the freezer book to find that our warranty covers the problem; called Sears and were advised a Technician would be in on April 14th. Technician was in and charged $80.00 for a service call; not here 20mins and also advised food lost would not be replaced!! We lost 60 kg of food totaling $412.00. We were advised that the compressor would be replaced at Sears expense and we bought the freezer May 25, 2004; we were advised that the cost of the compressor plus labor would far exceed the cost of replacing the freezer. The freezer we had before was 25 + yrs old and this one isn't 5yrs old; what gives? I have been a Sears customer since the 1970's and EVERY appliance, lawnmower, snowblower, TV's, VCR's mattresses, hose has been purchased from Sears. We are looking for compensation for food lost as Sears appliance covered under warranty is your responsibility (perhaps not the total amt but at least 50%). I have read complaints from other Sears customers who are likely no longer Sears Customers and very upset they were not treated fairly; I certainly hope this won't be the case with our complaint. We don't carry maintenance agreements as the yearly cost would cover at least 2 or 3 new appliances if they broke down!!
