DECEPTIVE COLLECTION PRACTICES
Semco Energy is one of the most deceptive, dishonest utility companies in Michigan. Keep a record of ALL your payments, for at least the past 7 years. If they come after you, out of the blue-stating that you owe a past due amount, from 5-6-7 years ago, I guarantee they will win in small claims court. Prior to that, though-they will threaten to turn your service off, lie, and state that they have taped recordings of you 'admitting' to the debt, and break any rule regarding collection practices by the MPSC simply to collect a debt. Their book keeping system sucks, and payments are often applied to standard outstanding accounts, rather than the account of the customer. Do NOT trust Semco, and if you have a problem whatsoever, go straight to the MPSC, the Attorney General and the FTC. Don't rely on our legal system to make fair and just decisions-because they don't. They know everyone by first name basis, and have frequent lunch dates together. I wouldn't trust the courts or judicial system in our county for justice of any sort.

We are filing a complaint with Semco Energy because we are very disturbed with their services. Upon recieving a dissconnection notice from them because we simply overlooked a bill, we promptly called the number on the notice, which said call right away. I spoke to a representative, who did inform me we could make payment arrangements at a gas station, and to call with a reciept number. She was informed that I may not make it there the past Friday, but it would be taken care of Monday morning, and it was first thing. I recieved a confirmation number and all.
Later that evening, when returning from our jobs, our gas was turned off. I called customer service again, and spoke to someone there. She stated that I was to call back with a reciept number. Then I stated that I called SEMCO first thing that morning, recieved a confirmation from Semco. I responded also by stating that I wanted someone to be back out ASAP to re-connect my services since I made a payment first thing JUST LIKE I SAID I WOULD DO. She then told me that a technician could only come out the following morning from 8-4. So, now, we are supposed to take the day off of work and sit here to wait for them?? How can a GAS company, especially, not have an after hours work crew for NON related EMERGENCY issues. To me, this was an emergency, considering we have two babies. They told me I would have to pay a reconnect fee of $50.00 which I strongly disuputed and will continue to dispute. Their automated system should inform callers to call back with a confirmation #, (even though the confirmation was given directly from Semco!! and anyone would think that information would post to someones account ASAP) before their gas is distrupted.
What is someone supposed to do? Go to a hotel for the night? Who would pay for that? We already have to take a day off of work because their systems do not update once payments are made on accounts. For being the only gas service in our county, they really should take their OWN mistakes into consideration and provide the best service that they can. I have NEVER had such a problem or inconvenience with any other utitly companies in my entire life. I am very upset with the way they do business!!!
