I was offered 25 free prints from Shutterfly; I signed up and ordered the prints to be mailed to my home; I gave my credit card information. I received the prints and they were fine. However, a few days later there was an email from a Reservation Rewards Company which I almost deleted since I had not heard of them before. Thank Goodness I opened it - it was confirmation of my enrollment in their program at a cost of $12.95 monthly which would be automatically charged to my American Express Card. I was ASTONISHED that this company that I never heard of already had my credit card number and expiration date and was going to make charges each month automatically.
HOW DID THAT HAPPEN? I unknowingly clicked a box when I was ordering my FREE prints from Shutterfly - that box when checked gives Reservation Rewards the legal right to enroll me in their program and automatically charge me $12.95 using the credit card information I had given to Shutterfly.
Their email to me made it sound like it was perfectly legal - but in my opinion it was DECEPTIVE. I was able to opt out of the program in time to get a refund of $12.95 - however, I download my transactions into my computer each day from my credit cards - if I had waited until my statement came in through the mail I would not have had time to request a refund and cancellation within their 30 grace period. PLEASE BE AWARE OF THIS DECEPTIVE PRACTICE.
