Savvy Senior Citizen March 4, 2010
Ripoff people
This is a total ripoff of senior citizens who come to a nice dinner to hear about saving energy in their homes. I went to this dinner and had them come to my house for an estimate. They turned out to be fly-by-night distributors of products I can buy and install myself for a couple hundred dollars. They wanted over $7000. They weren't even going to install it properly from the rafters but were going to just lay it down on the insulation as can be done in very cold climates. They said if I would write a letter of recommendation I could get the installations for only $4379 as a "pilot" program for my area. The man became very flustered and defensive the minute I mentioned I had looked up his information on the internet. He was then rude and almost beligerent.

He offered a great money-back guarantee, but wouldn't give me any physical address for the company. A guarantee is no good if there is no real company. Even their website looked small and contrived, and offered no physical location, either. He had no brochures and the website had no technical information.

Of the four products they were selling, I will either not bother to buy or will go online and get my own for $129 and have the local handyman staple to the rafters for me. That is the foil insulation. As for the surge protector they want to install at my electrical breaker box, it apparently only stores the spike that occurs when a motor starts, which might save me a few milliseconds a day. I mentioned this to him and then he changed his story to say it worked all the time, but had previously agreed it only used the small spike at motor start. This adds up to many a tenth of a penny over a month.

The savings charts he used assumed a large 20% utility bill increase every year for ten years, which is highly doubtful, and assumed a savings of 35% of my total energy bill, which is ridiculous. These absurd assumptions were written in smaller letters at the bottom of the page. I feel sorry for elderly people who aren't as tech-savvy and fall for the big dollar savings the chart suggested.

Don't buy their foil insulation - you can get it elsewhere for a couple hundred dollars if you want it. Don't buy their surge suppressor power box - it is a total waste of money. Don't buy their shower head or other items, either. You can talk to the man at your local Home Depot who can sell you efficient items like those if you want them, for a lot less.

These guys are hucksters who are in and out of a city within a week. I call that fly-by-night. They solicit senior citizens who aren't as tech savvy. They don't stick around to get you "off the grid" as they hype you up about, they only want to sell this quick in-and-out product today or tomorrow and then they're gone. Don't deal with these guys.

Scam
I attended a dinner, sponsored by Solar Tek International. At the dinner I notice that all of the guests were like myself, senior citizens. I saw two products demonstrated and became interested, at least in get a price. I invited the gentleman to come to my house the next day. He showed up the next day, introduced himself as Mike. Came in and sat down, I asked him "why were there only senior citizens at you seminar?", He said "I don't know". I then said to him "There is something fishy about this". and he said "There is something fishy the smell of your house". I told him to leave. He slammed his book grabbed his bag and proceeded to leave mumbling four letter words under his breathe.

I am writing this to let everyone know that if they want to do business with a arrogant, over bearing "salesman" who throws temper-tantrums when asked a simple question. The by all means, then go to a Solar Tek dinner when mike will be there. This was the ruddiest young man I have ever met maybe his parents could have done a better job raising him.

Attic Mold
After attending a nice dinner and viewing a short presentation about how much money I could save with Solar Tek's attic foil system I was hooked. I scheduled a consultation and spoke to an installer who assured me that their product would save me and my family tons of money over the upcoming winter. I explained to the installer that most of the attic in our century old home has a sub-flooring and that the foil would need to be put up on the rafters. Again, I was assured that the installation would be painless. I agreed and the installer immediately went to work. I should have been leery at this point but I just thought that he was that excited and proud of his workmanship and their product. After a couple of hours, the installation was complete and I crawled up into the attic to take a look around. The installation as far as I could tell looked good and neat and the attic temperature for a cool autumn day was fairly warm. Over the next few months, my utility bill did reduce slightly but of course not as drastically as they promised. I decided this past month (February) to go and double check their work more thoroughly before calling them back to complain. When I opened the hatch to the attic I immediately noticed black mold all over everything including the foil. I immediately contacted a mold remediation specialist who told me that the foil was installed on top of the attic vents and that moisture has been trapped in the attic since the installation was performed. The quote from the mold specialist was almost twice the cost of the attic foil. I've tried endlessly to contact Solar Tek International with my complaints and they haven't returned my calls. Due the severity of the mold issue, I had to displace my wife and kids while the clean up crew came in what looked like radiation suits to tear out the foil and spray down the attic. After they finished, they let me know that only the part of the attic that I could see from the hatch was covered with the foil and that the other parts of the attic weren't as moldy because the installer didn't complete the job. Good thing in retrospect I suppose. Either way, don't use this company!! You are better off calling someone else or doing the job yourself.

tl;dr Incomplete and incorrect attic foil installation led to black mold and three times the cost overall.

Incomplete Job
I went to a free Dinner that showed me this foil that was supposed to save me money on my power bills. Well I had them over and signed up for the install. The Installers came over a hour late without calling. They came in the house got mud on my carpet. When I mentioned the mud they told me that it wasn't that bad. They went in to the attic and started there work. a Hour later came back down to have a cigarette (for 30 mins). Then they went back up in the attic and spent another hour and said everything was complete. The next day I went up into the attic to see what it looked like. I three or four strips were laid nice and neat. The rest of the attic was a mess, pieces of the foil lifted up, strips not even touching, it was terrible. I have called several times no answer. After a week I final got someone on the phone. They told me they would send someone back out to take care of the install. That was 3 weeks ago and nothing. DO NOT BUY FROM THIS COMPANY!!!
