I moved out of the Commons apartments at Southern Polytechnic State University in January of 2010, paying all outstanding charges including a reletting fee for terminating the lease, December's rent, and prorated rent for January.
Six months later in June of 2010, a charge of $550.00 was erroneously added to my student account. When I contacted the Business Office, they told me that this was for rent last December (which was already paid).
I followed up with the Housing Office, showing my proof of payment for January, and they said I would have to follow up with the Business office.
I followed up with the business office again and they said they had nothing to do with the validity of a charge; the housing office would have to give them permission.
I followed up with housing again and they told me to go back to the business office and they would be notified that I was coming.
I called the housing office several times. I left three messages with the receptionist asking to speak to Jenny Cotton--the one who kept sending me to the business office. She never returned my calls. Spoke to a manager and she told me she would write me an email.
I never received an email or even a call and finally gave up. A report of this experience was left with the Better Business Bureau, and they said the school has an F rating for not responding to consumer complaints. And it is no wonder why. Financial aid ended up paying for the invalid charge.
