My partner and I were searching gumtree for a flat to rent in Manchester during our three year University courses. We came across STUNNING AND LUXURIOUS ONE BEDROOM TOWN HOUSE ON MANCHESTER.
We were told that to view this flat we must send money through Western Union to an account she set up as proof of our financial availabilty. She requested over £700. I explained that I didn't have this money as we had not started our courses yet, and she replied that she felt 'bad', and to just send the money we had, which were our savings of £360.
I went into our local travel agents where our local Western Union was situated, and they advised me not to do it as it sounded like a scam; why should I have to send this lady money before I had even seen the property?
I then informed Mrs Sanchez that I would not be transferring money anywhere and that I would instead scan her a copy of my bank statement, and she hasn't replied.
I'd just like to warn any students looking for flats to rent that Western Union is bad news, and if anybody asks you to transfer money do not do it!! Even if they ask you to transfer it to a friend; the people in the Travel agents said that some body else can claim the money before the intended receiver!!!
I'm so annoyed if this was a scam; some people should be ashamed of themselves, because two students could have lost their savings!!
From now on, I will be looking in local property agencies instead!!
