Propane tank
The manager came out today to see what the problem was. He found oil in the regulator and fittings. He installed a presure limit regulator (Think that is wha he called it, at the tank). Now I have the same problem that I started with a week ago, the water heart will not stay lit. After about ten trys and resetting the system it will not lit. So here I am back on the electric back up, thank God for that.
I've called the 800 number again to get some one to fix the problem. I wonder now long it will take this time to get someone out here that can fix the problem.

Price Gouging/Sleazy Practices
I had used Suburban for over 10 years. I did not realize how overpriced they were for several years but this year was so egregious (4.33/gal vs. 2.03/gal) I decided to get rid of them. They took two months to get rid of tanks and sent me a statement for my credit for gas and then charged me the EXACT amount of my credit for removal fees on tanks. Total scam. Accounting says in contract there is a charge for removal but they just make it up…Horrible company and should fined heavily for abuse.

Overpriced, bad customer service and bad maintenance
I moved into a new rental three months ago. I share a metered tank with another tenant on property. I noticed the bills were very high ($4.56 gallon metered + around $15month in added fees). This tank I confirmed was built in 1950s, the meters are from 1986 (Dept of Weights and Measure has been notified) and the lines from tank to building were very shallow in the ground, and some propane lines were exposed and sticking out of the ground. Even if the tank was "re-certified" as they claim, it looked terrible even if it was "safe." Also, the tank was sliding down a hill gradually over time and Suburban had to be notified about this to come fix it. I am having trouble getting my account credit and deposit back in a timely manner; also, I am having trouble getting them to come pick up their tank and equipment in a timely manner. What's more, their customer service reps usually tell me different things and some even lie, such as after I switched services telling me they would have worked with me on the pricing - but, that's not true, as they never previously offered to budge from $4.56gallon metered. I found a new propane company that charges me $2.50gallon metered and only $4month in any added fees. The new company properly installed everything (legal meters, low dug lines, new tank, etc.) and their tank looks very presentable (and the Suburban tank was far from presentable).

refusal to end service
We had 3 years of service with Surburban Propane and every transaction was a nightmare of deceit and scamming on their part. We finally got another propane supplier to furnish us with service and are happy with this. When new supplier set up their tank for our service they had to move Suburban's tank out of way so i had them set it in our parking area where it would be convenient for suburban to pick up. Now, Suburban just refuses to pick up tank and we've had inconvenience of it setting in our parking area for 5 weeks now and it is totally in our way. Is there something that I can do to get this remove. This is just another example of Suburban Propanes horrible behavior.
Thanks
Tom Hayes

Price Overcharging
On 07-06-09, I received a delivery of 48.2 gal of propane for $4.3990 per gal.
On 10-26-09, I received a delivery of 6.4 gal. of propane for $4.51190 per gal.
On 11-14-09 I received an invoice for $72.00 for a tank rental charge without prior notice. I have had the tank for over ten years from a previous company.
On 12-24-09 After questioning them, they lowered it to $38.88.
On 01-23-2010 I received a delivery of 28.9 gal. of propane for $5.9190 per gal.
These prices were several dollars higher than the market rate for that time.

Balloon payment
Was with the company for almost a year. They set me up with their payment plan of $100 per month which I paid monthly. Two months ago I received a bill for $83, which was great. Last month I received my bill for $84 so I called them so I can pay by telephone, they told me my bill was $205. They said that I have to continue paying $205 until the end of their fiscal year which is August. What happen to the contracted amount of $100? I can't afford to pay $205 per month for the next 3 months. They call it a balloon payment because they want everyone to be at a 0 balance at the end of their fiscal year. Why didn't they tell me that at the beginning. They could have told me this when I signed up for the service. I called a new company and instead of paying $3.65 per gallon, I now pay $2.15 per gallon. In may I asked Suburban not to fill my tank, I would let them know when I wanted gas. They tried to fill it anyway, but I caught them and stopped them. Now they want to charge me $199 because I ended the contract a couple of months early. These people are crooks!

Forced gas delivery/excessive min. chg
Suburban Propane came when no one was home, opened a closed gate, left 8.5 gal. in one of the two large tanks we have and charged us a min. of $85.00. This is ridiculous! Not going to pay it!

price gouging; scamming
Important: If you have had problems with Suburban, file a complaint with your county District Attorney Consumer Complaint office!
I was told I'd be charged over $4 for propane so I told them not to deliver. They delivered anyway!! Then they charged me even more- Over $5.75/gal. After 3 months I finally got them to pick up both their tank and gas after having to go get another company to bring me gas so I wouldn't be using theirs. Then they brought out a contract from over 10 years ago saying I used to be on auto delivery so they were allowed to deliver and I had to pay a pick up fee and some other fees. Now they want me to pay over $1000 for gas that I don't have and didn't ask for. I called the D. A. and they said to file a complaint with their online complaint form (after I had talked to them on the phone). The more complaints, the better).

Price Gouging
I believe Suburban Propane is price gouging. Price went from $3.4939/gal on 12/10/2009 to $3.6939/gal on 12/29/09 or a 5.7% increase. This was largely in-line with the national average, which went from $2.346/gal to $2.463/gal or a 5% increase.
But then Suburban Propane's price skyrocketed to $5.0390 on 3/9/2010, or a 36.4% increase. While the national average only went to $2.649 or a 7.6% increase. At this point Suburban Propane's prices were over 90% higher than the national average.
They remain artificially high to this day. I called around on 5/11/2010 and was quoted the following prices: Cenex $2.56/gal, Ferellgas $2.60/gal, and Amerigas $2.94 gal. Suburban Propane was still charging $5.03/gal.
When I called to complain, they told me they were not adjusting bills due to propane prices. I was told the price increase was due to market forces. But I disputed this because both February and March were unseasonably warm in Seattle. 22 days in February reached a high of 50 degrees or above, as did the first 7 days of March.
After they refused to adjust my bill, despite their clearly unwarranted price increases, I told them to close my account. They tried to bill me an extra $150 for early termination claiming I had a 3 year contract- which I disputed. I made them actually pull my paperwork and check section 4 which clearly stated I had a 1 year contract. Finally they relented on the early termination fee.
Moral of the story- call and get the price before every fill up. If you have auto-fill cancel the service. And if you can, cancel your contract and sign up with someone else.

Rip-off
BUYERS BEWARE!
My husband is a former employee of these thieves. He has seen first hand the shady business practices these people use:
1. Inflated pricing on propane and home heating oil compared to local competitors
2. Filling propane tanks the day before the tank is scheduled to be picked up
3. "Guess-timating" the amount of propane left in the tank to determine the customers credit, rather than weighing the tank to determine the actual amount of propane -- or outright lying about the actual amount of propane in the tank
4. Putting off "no heat" service calls received in the morning until the end of the day so they can get their scheduled maintenance appointments done first (believe me, the service technicians hate this just as much as you do!)
5. Insisting the service techs complete jobs without proper parts - for example, not changing out parts or using improper parts during the maintenance and cleaning of oil burners (like nozzles, oil filters, and controls)
Doing an internet search on Suburban Propane complaints results in numerous cconsumer complaints (sites like this one) and news reports of shady practices.
And the company treats its lower-level employees in the same manner. Managers are raking in bonuses for promoting these practices while the service techs, drivers & secretaries are forced to cover up these unscrupulous practices. We used to think it was only the local offices where my husband worked that was doing these things; however, after reading so many consumer complaints on this and other sites and seeing news reports of the same, I realize this a company-wide scam.
IT IS IN YOUR BEST INTEREST TO USE ANYBODY BUT SUBURBAN!
