We hired Sunray Services on 5/29/08 to fix a leak in our kitchen from our upstairs bathroom. The plumber who gave the estimate, Ralph, told us that the entire ceiling had to be removed, along with the side wall of our kitchen. My main, number one concern was plaster dust and possible lead paint as we had a newborn and a toddler in the house. He assured me in no uncertain terms that this would not be a concern and went over the precautions they would take in detail. We also talked about the antique molding in our 80 year old house—he told us he would preserve it.

Five minutes after Ralph arrived to do the job, he began hacking away at the ceiling with NO protection whatsoever. We realized this when we came back to the house a few hours later...Our house was ENTIRELY covered in plaster dust, upstairs, downstairs, every item we owned. The plaster dust, pounds and pounds of it, was allowed to freely blow over the entire contents of our house, with who knows what toxic substances in it.

At this point I wanted to end my relationship with Sunray, and get them out of my house...but my kitchen was torn apart and they had me—I was stuck trying to resolve this with them. We frantically called the manager at Sunray and got the runaround.

I contacted an Eric when the job went terribly wrong and we had a brief conversation about the fact that nobody put up sealed plastic sheeting and as a result, our entire house and its contents were covered in plaster dust which may have contained lead. He said it was not a health hazard and that "this just shows you that bad things happen to good people." I’m still cleaning it off my son’s books—it was so thick in the air that the dust is actualy inside the pages of every book in our house. This is a health and safety hazard and I am outraged that they put my kids in danger like this.

In the end, I paid the total $6140 bill in full. This was a mistake on my part, and I wish we had not, but with a newborn baby and toddler to think about, we just wanted to move on.

The estimate we were given was fraudulent. The person who gave the estimate told us it was a full 4 day job, but in reality, worked less than an hour a day and left our property for several hours apparently to do other plumbing jobs, and would then come back the following day to sit outside and smoke cigarettes for several hours, among other things. I believe that the estimate we were given, of $7400, was based on work that was either not done or not needed. We were told that the entire side wall of our kitchen would be removed and that was not done. I have confirmed with other tradespeople that this pipe should have been replaced. We were charged for it to be replaced but it was not.

Also, our house was damaged during the job and we were not compensated:
--Our antique molding was ripped down and cheap molding put in its place.
--The finish was ripped off my wood kitchen floor by scrubbing it with bleach and Windex.
--The sheetrock that was put up was put up after only one coat was applied instead of two or three. You can see the seams and bumps and it looks horrible.
--A defective faucet was installed with a heat sensor, instead of the same type that we had. Since no one could fix the problems we’ve had with it, during service calls, they apparently ripped off the heat sensor and the faucet stayed in our kitchen broken. We since hired Roto Rooter to replace the faucet.
I called probably a dozen times to try to get Mr. Haft, the owner of the company, on the phone. I faxed him and mailed him my complaint and he says he did not receive it. I sent a certified letter to him in January 2009 which was signed for, but he says he didn’t receive that either. He finally agreed to come to our home and inspect the work and resolve this, but never did what he promised, once saying he forgot, once they were on vacation. We have come to realize that all this is just the runaround, that the company has no intention of doing the right thing.
