Sunstate Movers Reviews

Scam
"DON'T LIFT A FINGER" services is really "WE GIVE YOU THE FINGER!"

Move was done through 1st Choice Movers which apparently is a subsidiary of SunState Movers and Storage. First of all, the movers showed up 4 hrs later than originally planned, which caused to have to stay an extra day in town. Then once they got started packing, the foreman left for a "personal emergency" and left his two helpers to work packing everything. Four and half hours later, the foreman shows up and is in a mad rush to get everything done. He started just throwing things in boxes without proper packing materials (they did not bring enough materials to begin with). About an hour later, the foreman's wife/girlfriend shows up at my house and gets into a big argument with her (a la Jerry Springer) in front of my house. The foreman was very rude to my wife when she asked them to not put up such a scene for all our neighbors to see. Given his urgency to get the job done, they were not really packing anything, just throwing things in boxes. They finally finished loading the truck around 9:30 PM and took off...and then he pulls the whole your estimate was weight based, but you have more cubic feet scam, yada yada yada, increased my estimate by 50%. A week an a half later I get a call from a driver from a different company asking me directions to my new place in New Jersey. Apparently this company had sold my job to this other company. When the driver arrived he asked me if I had any help to unload the truck since it was just him and one other guy. They ended up having to unload the truck themselves and halfway through, another guy shows up and takes one of the guys away because "he had a medical appointment" (yeah right!) and left just one guy to continue the move. I ended up having to help the poor guy bring the stuff up.

Now to the condition of the items. Just about all our boxes were crushed. It appeared they had been at the bottom of a pile with several other jobs stacked on top in the warehouse. Every single box had items damaged. They threw glass picture frames in the same box with books (with no wrapping) and the result was broken glass and ruined pictures everywhere. Our fine china was not packed in a "dish barrel" box, instead was placed in a regular type box and the box arrived crushed and opened. Many pieces were broken. All of our furniture had visible damage. One of the legs of our bed was severely cracked, a black lacquered console had a two inch scrape right on the top down to the bare wood, same thing happened to both of our night stands. Our bed which is a Select Comfort Sleep-by-number bed is made of various components, including a memory foam top. The foam was not wrapped in plastic or anything, it was just thrown into the truck and arrived completely filthy (there's even someone's footprint in the middle of it) and torn and cut in many places. I had to order a replacement from SelectComfort for over $350, because it was unusable. I paid extra to have my high-end electronics (computers, printers, home theater equipment) "professionally packed" -- this meant the stuff was just thrown into boxes and more stuff thrown on top of them. My 22" LCD monitor was at the bottom of a box, and they threw a boom-box radio on top of it...ON THE SCREEN itself. All my electronics have been scuffed up and scratched up. Needless to say, this job looks like it was packed by a bunch of gorillas, but then again, that would be insulting to gorillas. I purchased this company's "Don't Lift A Finger" service, but what I got instead was the "We Give You The Finger" service instead. Stay away from this company, they are the text-book definition of a moving company bait-and-switch scam. I hope they all burn in hell.

Sunstate Movers: A Tale of Woe

My experience with Sunstate Movers has been the worst experience of my life. They were scheduled to pick up my stuff on June 17th between 8:00 and 10:00 AM for my move from Florida to Colorado for an estimated price of $1604.00. They arrived promptly at 11:45 AM. AFTER loading everything I own onto their truck their foreman told me that their initial estimate was off and that the final charge would be $4632.78 which included an additional charge of $893.50 for packing materials. I packed almost everything myself and this packing charge covered some additional boxes, bubble wrap and tape to protect my things.

My scheduled delivery date was June 21st. I was told that they hit their scheduled delivery date 90% of the time. I called their one customer service representative on Monday June 21st and she told me that my things would be there at the end of the week and that the driver would call me the night beforehand to let me know when. At the end of the week I called the customer service representative again and she told me that there had been a delay and that the driver would call me early next week to let me know when he was going to deliver my things. The customer service representative repeated this circular lie to me continually over the next FOUR WEEKS. First I was told that July 4th would be the last possible delivery date. She then told me that they had until July 8th to deliver my stuff. When it didn’t arrive by that date I was told that in the fine print of the contract they have TWENTY ONE BUISNESS DAYS to deliver my stuff (that’s over a month). I was told July 14th would be the latest possible day. Finally on July 16th at 8:30 AM I was called by the driver to let me know that he would be at my house at 10:00 AM. I found out from him that my stuff didn’t leave the warehouse until July 13th. This means that the customer service representative lied to me for 4 weeks telling me that a driver would call me when they knew that my stuff was sitting in a warehouse and wasn’t going to me moved until mid July.

When everything I owned finally arrived I discovered that many of the furniture items protected by the $893.50 worth of packing material were damaged, scratched, dented or broken. They managed to shatter every plate I own. They taped shut the drawers of my furniture so that when you take the tape off, it takes the finish off. For some bizarre reason they shipped my TV and computer monitor FedEx, despite this not being anywhere in the contract (they arrived July 20th). When I got my 37’’ LCD TV the screen was broken. In a beautiful coincidence the only box they “lost” was my Playstation 3. They have now told me that their “insurance” covers $0.60 per pound. This means “lost” Playstation 3 gets me about $6.00 and broken TV gets me $24.00.

Over the course of this ordeal I have been lied to, cheated, and stolen from. It took me an average of 3 days to get in touch with someone from their company during this process. I finally started calling from other phones because I believe they were screening out my calls (it worked by the way). I have never complained about a company or service in my life, but I firmly believe that Sunstate Movers is crooked, lying, scam organization. The moral of this story: NEVER USE THIS COMPANY!

This company is full of Liars and Thieves!!!
My husband and I were moving out of state and we were given a "binding" estimate. When the movers came to our house they said that it was not done by weight as we were told, but by cubic ft and we had exceeded the amount of the estimate. This difference resulted in a 50% upcharge from the original quote. The movers themselves were very nice and they packed everything quickly and carefully. However, we were told that the truck that had our stuff would meet us in our new state promptly. We were even asked how soon we would be available to have them deliver our stuff. We have been sleeping on the floor for a week since our stuff is still not here. We had to go out and buy household items. Luckily we had thought ahead to pack some clothes. Every time we have called the "Customer Service" Dept we have been told something different. The last time we called we were told that our truck had not even left the original state. This company is only nice to you until you sign their agreement, then they screw you! DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!!! You will end up sleeping on the floor and having to buy items you already own! Also, we regretfully recommended this company to friends of ours who were also moving and they too had their stuff held hostage! Other friends of ours who used a different company have had no problems and they have received their stuff in a timely manner! I will tell everyone I know and anyone who will listen about how horrible this company is!!!

Scammers
As with most of the other complaints, I had similar problems. Cost was much more than original "binding" quote. They showed up 6 hours after the agreed pick up time. Also, they did not deliver on the scheduled day, even though they verbally agreed to it several times before they left with my belongings. READ THE FINE PRINT!! They do NOT guarantee anything, including on-time delivery. I am still waiting for my belongings and no one is telling me when they will deliver it. Every time I call to get an update, or complain, I am put on hold for upwards of 45 minutes. Today when I spoke with a representative I told her I deserve an apology for all of the grief and extra costs this has turned into, and her response was "I don't owe you an apology, I didn't do anything to you." Some professional customer service would be the least they could offer, her behavior was appalling! I could visualize her sitting there picking her fingernails and snickering!

sunstate movers are only professional and "nice" until they get you to sign the "binding" contract, " which binds you, but not them. Then they overcharge you and disappear with everything. I trusted these people and they have completely screwed my family. We had to go buy house ware items and clothing because they have all of our belongings. Don't believe a word that comes out of any of their mouths! Read everything before you sign!!
