overdraft fees
Overdraft fees--my account was $20 short--the $35.00 fee caused other over draftver fees resulting in $170 in OD fees. Brancg managers do not assist but direct you to customer service - no personal service. I was told to go to a branch I do not bank with to discuss setting up OD protection. I went to US Bank and moved my four business accounts there. They sent a representative to my business to set up the accounts with OD protection. I have had a lot of OD fee that could have been avoided if the branch managers would work with you on setting up OD protection.

The tellers are great--but the policies are terrible---gouge the customers seems to be their tactic of operation.

Overdraft Fees and Closed Account
My husband and I received a letter in the mail one weekend stating that there was unusual activity related to our account and the letter suggested that we call TCF. My husband proceeded to call and was told that there was a charge to our account of $500 dollars of overdraft fees due to 15 checks that they had paid on our behalf. My husband asked the customer service rep over the phone if there was anything that could be done and the CSR told him she could do a 1 time adjustment / credit of $174.00 but that still left us with a huge debt. When we asked the CSR to tell us what happened, she told us that my husband's payroll check was pending and that it had not been credited yet but they ran the charges first before posting his payroll. What a way to rip off clients of their hard earned $$. This happened again several weeks later when their online stated I had a certain amount so I went by that and lo and behold I got another $140.00 of NSF fees. When I went in and asked the lady what this was about she said that 4 items had been paid hence the NSF fees. I told the lady that the on line banking information said that I had enough $$ to cover those items. She then continues to tell me that items fall on and off, ie one day you run your on line statement and it may show it pending. So the next day it doesn't show up so you figure it's paid. But no, the next day it pops up again. I asked her to tell me how this is possible but she said she couldn't explain it that it just happens. I'm sorry but the people at the Roseville branch are IDIOTS!!! I finally closed my account with them after 2 rip offs. I always heard people say they hated TCF and I never knew why, now i do...

Rip-offs
Tcf bank is a big rip-off. I don't really understand why this bank is still standing and why is it not getting investigated by others. I just recently open an account with tcf bank and this is how they work with me. Example say if I have only 6 dollars into my account and I go to McDonald and purchase a burger which is less than 3 dollars. Once you swipe your card you will get a new balance which will be 3 dollars left into you bank account. So the 6 dollars is now 3 dollars because of the purchase of the burger. If you spend the extra 3 dollars that is left into account and nothing else is and there they will charge you an overdraft fee. I don't understand that because they took out the 3 dollars when you purchase it and give you your new balance so the mean you paid for it, but spending the extra 3 dollars left will give you an overdraft fee. I hope someone else will look into so that we can try to get them out of business for riping off people.

horrible service
DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS BANK. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE.
I opened an account at TCF while my husband was deployed overseas so he could transfer money to me. I had to open my own account because TCF refused to put me on my husbands account because he couldn't come into a branch to verify, despite being told it couldn't be done since he was a deployed soldier. After receiving a check to from someone else and depositing it.. NOT spending ANY of it. I went to check my account about a week later to see if the check had cashed yet or not, only to discover that the check had bounce (not my fault) and in reaction to this TCF CLOSED my account without notifying me. I NEVER got a letter saying they closed my account. After going into two different branches I was finally able to get my account re-opened only to have a fraudulent internet charge for almost a hundred dollars appear on my account two months later.
I contacted TCF the day the charge happened to figure out how to resolve the issue immediately. I filed all of the paperwork they needed and even tried contacting the company myself. I got a letter about a month later telling me that TCF needed ME to contact the company to resolve this matter and then respond to them. I tried to contact the seemingly non-existent internet company with no luck and wrote a letter and filled out a form TCF sent me in response to my findings. This time I faxed the information they needed three times and even went into a branch and made the branch manager fax it and then call to make sure it was received. Then I waited. I received a credit on my account for the fraudulent charge and thinking the matter was finished. I closed the account. Three months later I received a letter saying that I needed to pay more than the amount of the fraudulent charge or my account would be closed (I had already closed it). The following day I received a call from a collection agency for even more money in regards to my TCF account. I contacted TCF and they informed me that since I had waited five months they couldn't do anything and i would have to settle with the collection agency.
DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS BANK. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE.

TERRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!
It is critical to have a 3:00 cut off time for the bank, however going into the bank to make a cash deposit at 2:52 and I stand waiting in for a long time with the line growing behine me. I count 4 able body TCF wokers all behind the counter with signs in front of them that say next window please. One worker helping any/all customers that walk through the door, ONE! What is wrong with that picture??? It's like they deliberatly are doing other things so they can screw all of us that need to be in by the 3:00 cut off! Come on, what's that all about. Then she prints me a reciept with no time stamp on it. A date and other useless information is on it but not time stamo that seems to be so crucial. I call 612-TCF-BANk and even the woman on the phone tells me, "gosh yes we don't have time stamps on reciepts, that IS strange". Gee do ya think! Scamming bunch of BS...I'm DONE with TCF.

TCF Bank knowingly commits fraud in order to steal money from customers
I have been a member of TCF Bank for only a few months. Their policy on handling deposits is that if it is made before 2pm that it is available the same day, or after 2pm available the following day. If they are to put any type of hold on your money they are supposed to credit $100 of it. For one, my money was not immediately put on hold. Secondly, the check was shown as 'posted' via online banking and also showed up on my ATM balance inquiry. They did all but follow their policy in regards to my business account though.
Out of nowhere I was hit with more than $600 in overdraft fees. I called up the 800-TCF-Bank and was put on the phone with a supervisor within less than a couple minutes. First I was told that I did not deposit the check before 2pm, at which point I offered to fax a copy of my deposit receipt which clearly showed I did in fact make the deposit before 2pm. After his first attempt to defraud me was exposed, the supervisor explained to me that my checks were put on hold by the fraud department because they “could not be verified."
I could understand this point had I not deposited checks from “webmaster checks" (one of the biggest check processors for online webmasters there is) several times before without any problem whatsoever. She explained to me that sometimes Bank of America does not verify checks for other banks and even went into detail in her argument. I would have believed her had the lady at the branch not told me that her corporate office directly lied to me, and that the other bank would not have even had a chance to see the check at this point.
In fact she changed the story to blame that ATM deposits take an extra few days to process. Funny, it doesn't say ATM transactions take longer in the TOS and even on the ATM itself they have the same funds availability policy shown everywhere directly on the ATM itself. Even still, why would the check show up as posted via online banking and through the ATM? Better yet, why was my check not put on 'hold' until 2 days later after more than a hundred dollars in petty transactions were made?
The problem is that they allowed me to deposit a check, made funds available in accordance with their policy to my business check card, then out of nowhere 2 days later decide to after the fact put my funds on hold for the mere purpose of taking a $35 fee out on every pending transaction I had (which were all transactions made the night of my deposit, and posted the following day after my deposit). They then argued with me that I should not have purchased anything with my business check card despite depositing money in accordance with their funds availability policy.
The teller explained to me that “I should wait to see if they put a hold on my money or not" despite the fact that they have never done this before, and even still they are knowingly refusing to honor their “$100 credit" policy which states that if funds are to be put on hold then $100 credit is to be given out of the deposit. Basically they told me that after making a deposit to ignore their funds availability policy, what they show on online banking, or what they show on any sort of balance.
Basically, they told me that I should never spend money considering the hold was placed 2 business days after the check was deposited (after tons of petty transactions were made that would have caused the account to overdraft anyway if the check was on hold - therefore should have been declined). Not one transaction which was created the night after my deposit was for more than $20. In fact more than half of the transactions which subsequently were given $35 fees were less than $5. Had the $100 credit been issued in accordance with their policy or the funds been available in accordance with their funds availability policy none of this would have happened.
Please help me to expose the unlawful things at least one bank has been doing to try to take advantage of its clients during the recession. Several other banks have settled class action lawsuits and other civil suits for purposely manipulating its transactions the same way this bank has now done to me. I know I am not the only person who is having problems because I have heard more than enough horror stories about TCF Bank before experiencing first hand – I put convenience of their banking hours ahead of rumors and previous stories on ripoffreport - I wish I had listened to the rumors or researched this bank for even 30 seconds before opening an account.
I have had to deal with nothing but problems and lies. Every time I have had even small problems with TCF the response you get depends on the person. If you call up 3 times in a row and speak to 3 different people then you will get 3 different fabricated stories guaranteed.
I was very lucky to have printed copies of my online banking that showed the check being deposited, a deposit slip showing the deposit was made before 2, and a copy of an ATM balance inquiry before they pulled this stunt. The bank manager put the money back in my account when he realized they were out of lies and excuses and that I had them by the balls.
I hope someone files a class action lawsuit against TCF Bank. I don't even want some of the money, I just think that they need to be taken off their pedestal and taught that even banks can't get away with fraud.

Unnecessary Bank Check Holdings, Bank Fraud, Overdraft Charges
I have banked for more than 49 years at Midwest Federal/TCF Bank Branch in Edina & Edina Cub Foods TCF. I have paid back Equity lines and been a good bank customer.
However it is clear that the bank is creating scenarios to create EXCESSIVE OVERDRAFT fees,
and withholding funds from people. Herein lies a HUGE PROBLEM for our economy. THE BANKS. is that a surprise?
If they generate an 8 day holding time. 4:00 on Thursday one week, my funds aren't available until the following Friday - 8 days. (they like to call it 5 business days)...During that time I'm unable to pay vendors, hire people, pay my suppliers, or do other business as my hands are tied.
What a joke that Bank of America is spending big bucks on ads they are out to help small business. No one is. Anyone that succeeds with small business today, does it in spite of their banks, not with the support of the banks.
Any checks that I write are going to bounce. Even though they have $5, 000 of my money in their bank. Bank managers won't help you to get approval. They probably can, they won't. Or they play favorites, or discriminate based on race? Perhaps they help some and not others.
We have a major problem with the banks. We have all outgrown them. We need new systems
they provide no service to me. An anonymous machine is better than our banks. Please paypal, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, someone...please hear us. It's clear our Governors aren't listening.
When I tried to complain about the check holding, I was told to call the Federal Reserve. Try that exercise...some day if you have a day with nothing to do. No one is home. Or are they having a big lunch downtown? Not sure.
So other than holding checks so they can create overdraft fees, what's up?
I had $4.37 overdraft and they actually created 2 $35 overdraft fees and put an overdraft fee on my overdraft fee--to charge $70. That's just simply bank theft and fraud.
I vote for getting the cops to stop in their $300, 000 cop cars ticketing for seat belts. I'd rather assign someone to investigate white collar crimes going on in the banks.
Is there a better bank? I bet they are all getting away with screwing their customers.
Let's get some consumer protection laws in here. You've got people ready to commit suicide over it...this is a huge cry for help.
Meanwhile...watch out for their ad for their free checking. (right)

unfair over draft fees
For the last two months I had been trying to bring my bank account and bills up to date in an economy that is troubled. I'm laid off right now and am having trouble paying bill. I'm on a budget with just enough money comming in from unemployment to pay bills. For the last two months TCF Bank had charged me over $800 in just over draft fees With my over drafts being only just over $100 total. With these fees Im having trouble living to where I dont want to live anymore. I had just gotten off the phone with TCF Bank with a $5.87 over draft and some how the way the suffle the money around I'm stuck paying $210.00 extra dollars on top bringing the total to $215.87 how can this be? Its all on the way they suffeld my money around and I cant figure out how they keep getting away with this. when I call them they give me a run around and tell me its how I spend my money like its my fault. Ok I went over $5.87 so charge me the $35.00 over draft fee but dont times it 6 times. Is anyone else having trouble with TCF Bank un fair overdrafts? How can we boycott TCF Bank? Is it fair that I have to pay $210.00 on top of my $5.87 over draft???? I'm so sick here is my email if anyone can help me or if you want to share the nonsence that TCF Bank is doing to you. [email protected] please share with me your TCF Bank problems and if there is anyway to shut TCF down??
