TD Banknorth Reviews

Hiring PROCESS
Hello,

My name is Manivone Xaiyavong and I have applied to your bank and basically got the job. I know there is a 48 hours period to have your drug screen, and finger print done. I was told by Human Resources to take my drug screening test last Friday Sept 17th at 5pm. I have everything written down, and did everything I was told to. Human Resources admitted that it was her mistake that she mixed up the time, and so she stated that she will extend the 48 hours (monday and today) to do so. As I am on my way to take the drug screen and finger print, she has cancelled my application within 48 hours. I dont think that was right, and I deserve this job. I have also reported this to the BBB.

I dealt with Lynn (Human Resources) and the numbers I reached her on is

Cell: 603-660-4306 Office: 978-684-6625

and supposedly her Manager Lee Scott (Human Resources) at her office 908-342-5266.

Please investigate, because I will not let this go. Please reach me at 978-328-4901, or my email at [email protected]

overdraft fees, false readouts at deposit ATMS and online
The ATM readout will tell you that you have x for available balance, and then one minute later- after taking out some cash, it will scare the pants off you by completely messing up the balance with something that does not indicate the amount you just withdrew! I have had this happen and had it cause my account to overdraw. When you do this on a Sunday afternoon, and you've already deposited more then $100 into the ATM, and there is nothing to transfer from you savings to checking- then you are STUCK.
I have also seen the balance in my online account page show one thing one hour, and another an hour later... in a way that proves that it doesn't work corectly. For example, you get up in the AM- you check your balance, etc. There are no items pending in the "pending" area... you knew there were pending items the night before, and now it appears they have "gone through". NOPE! One hour later, a few of the pending items show up again!!! BE very Careful people!
When you ask the bank people about this they will admit the machines don't work correctly. WHAT! ? Yes- they admit it! They tell you to "use the online and the ATM onscreen systems only as REFERENCE" and that the "only way you can tell what you have in your account is to keep a running hand written roster/register". ! ! !
I thought that if a bank teller hands you a reciept it was as good as gold! As good as the word of a Judge telling you what your balance is! ? Now we see that when the ATM teller machine "hands" you a slip with the same information from the same bank, you can't trust it? ! Trust me- you CAN NOT trust the balances on those BankNorth ATM machines!

The other day, I woke up to find my "available balance" had dipped to about $12 or so in the negative. The "balance" was still around $7 or $8... in the possitive. (figure that one out!!). If you looked at the night before- the "balance" had ended at midnight being $26 ( a possitive balance!). I ran to the ATM and put in $20 thinking I was making things "safe" . Not so! later in the day I put in another $20 to make things "safer yet" and Bingo! they had charged me three overdraft fees totalling $105 !! Yet- the balance in my account had never dropped into the negative!!! (again- figure that one out! ) I had been told on the phone and perhaps in person many times by bank employees that "as long as the account is possitive at the end of the day you will not be charged overdraft fees".

Not so!!! Buyer beware!!!

TD Banknorth is a very, very greedy bank like most others I suppose. Thank goodness that we were able to find a few understanding employees who refunded the fees. If I did not need the account, I would never have it. In this day and age we are pretty much bound to have checking accounts etc. in order to cash checks, and make many transactions. It almost makes you wonder if we've sold our souls somehow already, and these credit/debit cards we carry around really are the mark of the Beast that Revelations speaks of. I certainly hope not, but without them- it is almost impossible to "buy and sell".

fraudulent fees and threatening more
I have long had issue with TD Bank's outrageous fee asessment, moving of my tranactions, and denial of any wrongdoing. On the rare occasion I have been refunded a fee, it has been with condesention and nastiness. My complaint now is about how money for the same transactions was removed from my account twice to create a large overdraw, then put back after the fees were asessed to charge even more money.

When I went to the bank to ask about why I was charged nearly $300 in fees, the person I spoke to showed me how $18.00 in transactions had been held, leaving 7.99 in my account. Then 8 additonal transactions were put through my account. All of the transactions by the way add up to less than 25 dollars. I did not make 8 transactions in addition to the 18 dollars in transactions that were "held" . I specifically asked if he was telling me the 8 transactions he is showing me on 7/12 are different transactions apart from the ones that had been on hold for the 18.00 on 7/9. He said they were different transactions apart from the transactions in the 18.00 being held. I then requested to see what transactions made up the 18.00. He went to print them out, then tried to distract me from them to discuss the additonal 4. It was at that time that I noticed that the same 4 transactions on the 18.00 hold were the same 4 being charged as overdrafts in additon to that amount, each having a fee asessed. When I pointed this out, he changed his story, but I had the printout and I had questions.

What had happened was the 18 dollars had been held, then the additonal 4 transactions were out through along with at least 2 of the previous ones already taken out, which would overdraw the account because th emoney was already taken out once already. Then, fees were asessed, then the 18.00 put back into my account (the person I spoke to type in some different code or number to show different screen with them the way they show up on the statement), but sucked up by the 105 in fees. Then the remaining hold transactions put through and I was charged more money in fees. Then, a check went through and was charged an additonal fee. While I can understand that banks charge for an overdraw, to remove the money twice to increase the number of fees asessed and then deny it seems unethical. In all I should have been charged 1 fee and that was for the check. The other overdraw came to less than 5 dollars, which they state in their own information they do not charge for. Even if they did, again that does not add up to $285 in fees. As a result of being unaware of these fess until I had made further transactions, I discovered my balance was -800.00 over half of it being fees they had asessed me. I have seen this happen many times when my account is within 50 dollars. I even had a check returned when the money was in my account (I was in that case refunded the fee).

Last March I noticed similar things going on with my checks. I would see a check cashed on one day, then I'd see it moved to the day before a few days later and several fees charged. When I went to the Winooski branch to ask about this, I was told by the Branch Manager Kaitlyn as follows: The check came in at midnight, the same time as your direct deposit. We held your direct deposit until 1am to put the transactions though." When I contacted TDBanknorth by phone and told them this because I wanted to know if it was true, I was told there's no way she would know what time the check went through and holding my direct deposit was illegal, especially if it were to put transactions though. There was conveniently no time on the check when i finally managed to get a copy of it. It has been suspiciously unavailable to print out or view online, even though I was in the current month to do so.

I was also charged an overdraft fee after making a $2100 deposit in May of this year, even though I made the deposit at the ATM before the time that would make it unavailable until the following day. Again suddenly that was not the policy when I asked.

All of the questions about thsi btw, including this week's transaction game play were followed by attemtpting to get me to open a savings account stating it would solve the problem. Except it doesn't. There are many stipulations that even when I asked were not told to me when I initially was going to open a savings account. It is just another way to manipulate more money out in fees.

When I contacted TDBanknorth by phone to speak with a manager this evening, not only was I given the same excuses. But when I said I would file a complaint about it and close my account, I was threatened with additonal retaliatory fees and told I'd be left with little over $3 in my account when he was done. His name was Ryan Wall. I am certain that is illegal and would liek to know how to file a formal complaint directly against him. He apparently feels he is above the law and as he said, "is confident that he is in the right." If I see additonal fees asessed to my account now, I fully plan to report it. I an be reached at 617-391-8451 or 802-862-6174 x139 before 4pm on weekdays. I do have printouts to fax of this recent transaction issue and can tray to find any I still have in my posession regarding previous issues. I believe they do this to create an overdraw history in accounts so they can justify their refusal of returning fees and remove any credibility the person has when they ask questions. Please let me know how I can be assisted with this as I am now concerned that Mr Wall is going to create further issues in my account to justify his behavior.

Thank you
Scott Robinson

Disappearing deposits
Deposited a check yesterday morning (Friday 11/27/2009) at the 136 Margaret St., Plattsburgh NY location, and immediately checked my account balance: the check was there, I was happy.

This morning (Saturday), I find that my account is overdrawn, so I check my account both online AND on the phone (and I called the numbers for both the automated service AND the live representative) and the check is no longer there. It simply disappeared. There is NO RECORD of my depositing a check yesterday morning; it's not in my Account History or in my Pending Transactions. The check simply doesn't exist, according to the numerous representatives I talked to over the phone.

Luckily I have my teller receipt AND a mini-statement from the ATM showing the check, and will be bringing them down on Monday. I can't wait for the runaround and double-talk I'm SO used to getting from TD. As soon as they fix this and put the money back in my account, I'm closing the account and putting my money into Key Bank.

This isn't the first problem I've had with this bank. They've been regularly charging me overdraft fees when my account isn't overdrafted, and then the FEES cause me to be overdrafted, resulting in MORE OVERDRAFT FEES. I never ever had a problem with this bank before the merger, but now they're messing up my account on a regular basis.

Overdraft charge
I was billed an overdraft charge when my account reflected being in the positive. With no clear explanation of why the account was overdrawn. So I call TD BANK and waited about 45 Min before a representative answered the phone and was told that there was a authorization on 9/30 that hit the account and my next purchase of $2.26 hit the account. To make matters worse the purchase that TD BANK states was on hold did not hit the account until 10/13. So they bill me an over drafted fee for no reason at all. TD BANK is the worst bank I have ever dealt with and will be canceling my account with ASAP.

fraudulent charge handled improperly
I used to have a TD Banknorth account... apparently now I don't, since they closed it out for non-payment of fees I never should have been charged. In spring of 2009, my computer got hit with massive virus infection (despite anti-virus software) and I was in the midst of having my home turned upside-down for months due to bedbugs in the building (I live in a high-rise with 150 apartments). Because my computer was down for over a month -- I didn't want to either have someone in or send it out until I could be sure I wouldn't be infecting the repair shop with bedbugs! -- I couldn't have authorized the charge which showed up on the account, which was for some kind of online game. And because EVERYTHING in my apartment had to be sealed in plastic bags (and being disabled I was relying on aides and volunteers to help accomplish this, leading to items whih should have gone in, say, the "important mail" bag instead going in a bag full of random clothes, medication, junk mail, and recycling) I didn't even see the statements showing the problem for months. Weirdly, I found out about the charge because someone called *claiming* to be Banknorth wanting me to restore my account to good standing. The guy sounded perfectly professional, and in fact the only thing that tipped me off was that he verified my identity by asking for the last 4 digits of my social rather than my account number and some transactional info like the last deposit amount or the location of the branch where I opened the account, like Banknorth usually did. So after hanging up with Mr. Helpful, I called the bank (using the number I know) concerned I might have just been the victim of phishing. They confirmed that my account had gone negative -- whoever picked me to scam off was unlucky in that I only kept that account for the convenience of a nearby branch, and do almost all my banking at my alma mater's still-unmerged hometown bank, so there was little enough in the Banknorth account that the first fraudulent charge caused an overdraft and *the thief couldn't use the account anymore*. But they also told me that a real TD Banknorth rep would NOT have asked for my SSN, even the last 4 digits. I told them I knew nothing about the charge, and they said they'd send me a dispute form. But when the form arrived, I was flabbergasted to see they required ME to tell THEM how the thief had gotten the fraudulent charge through! As if I would have any idea whether he (or she) had gotten my debit-card or account number or how, or used some other method to buy their internet game whatever. When I contacted the company the charge had been made at -- Three Rings / Puzzle Pirates -- they responded to me within 24 hours and sent a letter for me to show the bank and a check for the amount my account had been billed. (I have NO complaints about Three Rings, who were very nice about the whole thing & would even have just credited the fraudulent amount back to my account... if the bank hadn't closed it by then!) I'm now going to go to my local branch with the dispute form, letter and check and give them their choice: they can give me a new account with different debit-card & account #s (since I at least still don't know which the thief used or how) and I will deposit the refund check with them for them to profit from the interest on -- or I will take my money elsewhere, use the letter from Three Rings to get any negative credit-bureau reports removed, and eventually join the inevitable TD Banknorth class-action suit for overdraft-charge victims... oh, yeah, and they'll NEVER be able to collect those OD fees they sent me to collections over, because I'm disabled and my only income is Social Security, which by law can only be garnished to repay debts to the government itself. We'll see which option they choose; with the regulatory environment (CT's own Senator Dodd) about to kick banks in the balls over overdraft abuses, they'd be stupid not to take option #1.

FEES!
I made 19 dollars in purchases- with my visa card.
Now the bank is charging me 175 dollars in overdraft fees because apparently
my balance online differs from what is actually in my account.
Sound like it's impossible-? tell it to the person writing this complaint who at the moment in in tears.
How we'll make it through the week I don't know- the bank is taking all of my paycheck in fees.
DO NOT TRUST TDBanknorth--> be warned.
Greedy corporate bank.

Bad Service
TD Banknorth used to be a good bank. I signed up for a "free" checking, no minimums, no monthly charges, etc. Then it all changed with no warning. This caused my account to overdraw. Then if you don't pay it, they tack on another $35.00 every five days. Well I fought back and won. If it happens to any of you - fight back. Here is the contact information for Banknorth. Businesses count on consumers being doormats, after all we have been tolerating exceedingly bad customer service over the past years. It is time to demand customer service as it used to be in the United States. Banknorth will also deduct the largest debit first that way all the smaller ones will accumulate $35.00 fees for each one, regardless of whether it is $1.00 or whatever. They do not make deductions or credits based on the date and time of the activity. They make it based on what will get the most number of fees for Banknorth.

Bottom line is I wouldn’t bank with td Banknorth again, no matter what. Banks used to be where you put your money to keep it safe – not anymore. Banks such as td Banknorth abuse their customers in order to generate the largest amount of fees. They do not give a rat’s whatever about the customer.

You are much better off banking with a local community bank or credit union, not a large conglomerate based in a foreign country – yes Canada is a foreign company. At this stage of the game we should only be supporting American based companies anyway. While it is nice to have the convenience of having “your” bank everywhere you go – it is not so nice when they attempt to steal from their customers.

Loan Denied
Bought car throught a local dealer and applied for a loan through Chase. On the delivery date, the car was damaged. The next day the entire transaction was cancelled and my $5, 000 deposit plus another $250 in registration fees were refunded. On 8/29, receided a letter from TDBanknorth postmarked 8/24 saying my car loan on 8/10 was denied based on data from Experian. Called Experian and they provided and complete report of 29 pages with NO derogatory comments - perfect credit. There is no obvious reason for TDBanknorth's refusal. There letter has to be issued in error. To date they HAVE NOT responded to email or letters and they will not discuss the problem on the phone. Customers should be wary of doing business with them - they have expanded too fast and our insensitive to people - especially Senior Citizens.

Rip Off
I have been a victim of TD Bank as well. I signed up for free checking w/ no minimum balance, and then low and behold they change the rules. That is not the contract I signed up for. If they had at least informed me I would have closed out the account before I had fees that I had no knowledge of put me in the negative on this account I hardly ever use. It is used for specific purposes. I have also had money stolen for OD fees when there was actually a balance to cover any activity. I have had quite enough.

I did not realize and should have, that TD Banknorth is a Canadian Corporation. I have a practice of only doing business with American companies and corporations – not that they are any better these days. The American consumer has become so complacent and apathetic, allowing these companies to treat us a door mats. This consumer says not anymore.

Banknorth lost a lawsuit back in April, costing them $50 million; perhaps this is why they have begun these predatory practices. They would have been far better off to not conduct business in such a way that it put them in the position to lose such a lawsuit.

For all of you complaining on this and other boards – do more. Email everyone on your contact list; tell everyone you know to beware. Complain to the FDIC, BBB and AG if applicable. Bad word of mouth can be very damning to a company. Email everyone in the company that you can. Call everyone in the company that you can. Do not take no for an answer – you can and should fight back. By calling executives and the like you are costing the bank money. These people are highly paid and the time spent with dissatisfied customers is time away from what they consider more important business, business that generates high revenue for the bank.

Below are email addresses for executives of TD Bank. I will be posting some Blackberry and office numbers of these executives in a few days. Call them, bother them, cost them money – after all they are taking yours. Stop being a victim!
