TD Banknorth Reviews

Incompetent customer service!
As if i could not hate this bank any more then i already do...
After spending the day buying plane tickets and other items for an upcoming trip and using my TD Banknorth card for all of it, i figured i may as well order a new card finally since the one i have now is pretty beat up. I called the 800 number for them and went through to usual 10 minutes of repetitive phone menus that try and make you do things through a computer. I finally got a human and asked about ordering a new card. "No problem". She said. A new one will be coming to you in 10-15 days with the same account # but a new expiration date and a new 3 digit security code on the back. At that point i was happy and had that been the end of the story, there would be no issue. After all, in the past, when you order a new card, it's nothing more then a pieice of plastic till you activate it. Untill you do activate it, your old card works the same. Well NOT SO with TD Banknorth!. She proceeds to tell me that while my current card will function fine at any place i use it with a card reader, it will NOT work with ANY online or phone transaction that require an expiration date and security code. I asked her why and she said as soon as she put in the request for a new card, it instantly changes the info in the system. So now EVERYTHING i bought online today and over the phone will be DECLINE! I told her "Forget it, i dont want a new card now" and she said, the change cannot be reversed. What the hell? Why would you make PERMANENT changes to someones account that will cause any purchases they have made to decline WITHOUT WARNING THEM FIRST!!!. Had she said "Before i request a new card, be aware that any purchases you made online will be rejected" i would have told her forget it. But telling me AFTER the fact? I was irate. She then says, "Well the new card will be there in 10-15 days" like that makes it better. After screaming at this nitwit and then a supervisor, they agreed to fedex me a new card to be here in two days at their expense. It still does not help me NOW. Now i will look shady and have to re-do all these purcahses thanks to TD Banknorth yet again being run by total idiots. I hate this bank, but is there any better bank in Mass?

They are screwing me
I recently bought something at Target. Fine. In the middle of check out my fiancee told me I should apply for their credit card for a discount on the purchases. I told the cashier that i wanted to apply. She called a manager over who 'Voided' the transaction. Fine. I then went on to buy what I had, which was fine. When I left I called the Banknorth 800 number to check my balance. The original purchase was 292.32, my account was charged twice. I went back to target at the request of a Banknorth CSR to hasten the refund of the Voided transaction, by midnight of that day, instead of waiting five business days. I got to Target and the manager and I called Banknorth, we were told what to fax to them to do a Merchant Transfer. We did exactly as requested. That night before work I called the 800 number to talk to a rep to check the status of my refund. They said Target did not fax all the info. Wrong, I stood right there and watched the manager do all that was asked. So, I took down all the info that the supervisor at Banknorth said they needed, that if we re-faxed the info in the morning that the refund would be posted at midnight that day. I called Target, talked to the manager and we got everything the bank wanted and she faxed it to them. I called the bank two hours later, as requested by them, and was told that Target didn't fax everything, which they did, i got the duplicate fax here at home. Then the supervisor at Banknorth told me that both of the transactions were being processed, even the voided one. He said that the void would take until 9/3/08 to process, that in the meantime that money, my money, would not be available to me. I told him that I have now have no money for gas, food and other essentials. This is Labor Day weekend. He told me there is nothing he can do, that even if Target sends another fax that it's too late. He said that I could dispute the transaction, but that refund would take 10 business days. Did he not here what I said? Now for the good part. I told him that most of my bills are withdrawn electronically and that they would pop today, what about the overdraft fees. He said they would still apply and would be automatically taken from my pay when it is Direct Deposited next week. I told him that as my bank you are supposed to protect your customers. That didn't faze him. I told him that this is between the bank and Target, he said no, this is between you and Target, and that any fees acrued on my account are my responsibility. Now I'm furious. This supervisor was as heartless and unfeeling as a Golum. In the two days of talking to many representatives and two supervisors, I was treated like crap. I was made to feel like I had done something intentionally wrong and they would lift not one finger to help me. Did I mention I've been with this A-holes for nearly 9 years and until now have never had a problem with them? Now they are completely unwilling to A) listen to me, and B) help me. I'm not a bum, I work hard for my money and my account is always...ALWAYS up to date and never...NEVER OVERDRAWN!!! I am through with this instituition of scumbags. When this is cleared up I will take my paycheck next week, what's left of it, and close my account with them. Ever see the movie Falling Down? I'm going to be the guy outside the bank holding a sign, only it won't say, " Not Economically Viable", it will say, " TD Banknorth, Where Customer Service Exists Only In Your Imagination." I hate them and want to bring them down.

Lied to by several different departments
I've been a member of TD Banknorth for 5 years.

Approx 3 months ago I was laid off. I have several "Direct Payments" that are taken from my checking account from a few different companies. Having no income meant that eventually I was going to go into the negative- this was inevitable.

I called the Bank North 800 number to see if there was a way to "lock" the checking account so it wouldn't grow to an amount that was unmanagable- At this point in time the account was negative 400 dollars. The woman informed me she could not do anything on her end however if I called my branch manager they may be able to do something. I called my branch manager and he stated it was "impossible" to lock an account though he'd be willing to work with me in regards to the overdraft fees accrued when I was able to find employment. Having no options I said "Okay, I'll be in touch" and left it at that.

A few weeks later I started getting calls from services such as Verzion and Vonage telling me they were unable to take payments from my checking account. I immediatly logged into my online checking to see that it was negative 800 dollars. I called Banknorth and the woman I spoke with told me that my account was now "locked" due to my financial situation and credit status. I thought this was odd since I had been told by a branch manager this was "impossible". Again, having no options I thanked the bank rep and got off of the phone.

Today I got a job offer!! Finally! After recieving my job offer I logged into my TD Banknorth online account to see the status of my checking account and it was GONE. I called TD Banknorth to see what was happening with my checking account and they told me it had gone to collections. I was in utter shock that it had gone to collections simply because I was never informed the account could or would go to collections. I asked to speak with a supervisor named Melissa who was extremely rude and was unwilling to hear what I had to say. In short, the supervisor named Melissa essentially told me that I was wrong and nothing I said was true. I was then given a number to the bank's collection department.

Unfortunately the collection department I needed to speak with was closed and I will need to call back tomorrow. I was explaining my situation to a woman in a seperate collections department and she was very sympathetic and she was 100% more polite and understanding than the supervisor Melissa. I explained to the woman in collections that I was befuddled by the fact that I hadn't atleast recieved a phone call in regards to my account going to collections at which point she told me they did make several attempts to reach me. I asked what telephone number they were calling and they gave me a telephone number that hasn't been connected to my house in over 4 years. This is surprising because I updated my contact number when my origional number was terminated, and I also updated my telephone number when I switched to Vonage. Apparently folks in the department I called were not doing their jobs.

Obviously I have been lied to left and right from all levels of Banknorth- from customer service reps, to supervisors, to branch managers. I hate to use the word "lied" because there is no direct benefit to any individual I spoke with for them to give me misleading or untrue information.

Simply put I believe this bank has grown to large and is starting to unravel from the inside out. I recall when I first joined this bank and it was a great place to save your money, unfortunately now there is a major lack of internal communication.

I do plan on paying off the checking account and then closing it. I also plan to close my savings account.

I will be opening new accounts with a much smaller, customer service oriented bank in my area. I suggest currect TD Banknorth members do the same.

I will leave you with this...

TD BANKNORTH SUCKS! STAY AWAY!

Outrageous overdraft fees
In the past, I have done business with other banks, but I have never experienced anything like what this bank is doing.

I know that if you overdraw your account, there is a $35. fee. This bank charges the fee every five days until you make a deposit.

I've spoken to these cold hearted cut throats and have gotten nowhere with them. I'm a senior citizen, and if I'm not mistaken, it is against federal law to charge overdraft fees on direct deposit Social Security checks. It fell on deaf ears with these people. Since us seniors only get paid once a month, I think this is a rip off on a grand scale and should be stopped. We're talking anywhere between $100. and $200. for the month just in fees if you overdraw your account.

I want every cent this bank stole from me in fees.
