On Dec.19.2010, my husband and I paid a visit to Teak Charm along Jln 225 in Section 51A PJ. We were looking for a coffee table. We almost gave up when we couldn't find anything we liked that suited our budget. Just as we were about to leave, we noticed some rather neglected looking tables underneath other furniture and upon closer inspection we decided to get it if the price was right and if they could clean it up and deliver it before Christmas. The salesperson said it cost RM788 and that the original price was RM1950. She also said they'd clean it up and have it looking like new and deliver it by the 22nd. We paid for it in full and agreed to pay RM40 for delivery. The next day however, my husband received a call from the salesperson to tell him that they had made a mistake with the price and that the lowest price they can sell for is RM1500. She said they would refund our money if we weren't willing to pay the extra RM712.
I went to the shop on my way home from work that same day and demanded to see the person in charge. The manager was very apologetic and offered to take off another RM200 thus making the new price RM1300. I did not accept his offer because in principle the table already belonged to us as we had paid the full asking price. They were holding us to ransom simply because the table was still with them. What if the item had been a cash and carry item? Would they come looking for us to ask us to pay extra? After much arguing, the manager explained that his boss gave him instructions to refund our payment and that he was not authorized to do anything else. We had already given away our old table and there was no time for us to go looking for another table in time for Christmas. I then insisted on talking to his boss and he called her from his mobile. I must been on the phone with her for at least 15mins before I agreed to pay another RM212, which meant the table now cost us RM1000.
We received our coffee table on 3 days before Christmas but the surface was a little sticky. The delivery man said it should dry in 3 or 4 hours. However, it was still sticky the next day. We called the shop and were advised to wipe it down with a damp cloth and let it dry naturally for a few hours. It was a little less sticky but still not fit for use. Teak Charm then told us they think they may have used the wrong type of oil and were willing to collect the table from us to redo it. We told them that we'd call them after the holiday season as we would be entertaining until the new year. It was a little embarrasing for us when guests found their drink coasters and tissue sticking to the table! We would end up having to tell them our coffee table fiasco and I'm sure that was not good publicity for Teak Charm.
