check denials
On June 30, 2011 I tried to cash a check at an eye clinic. I had used this same account many times with no problems. The IRS and the State of Michigan have accepted checks from this account among many others. There is much more than enough funds in the account to cash the check (for $1, 998). The check was rejected. I call the toll-free Telecheck number from the clinic's office. The telephone rep said that she was able to correct the problem and that I should try the check again. (It was processed in one of Telecheck's machines). I did and it was rejected again! I then had the lady in the office at the eye clinic try a check from another checking account I have. This account also has ample funds to cover the check amount. I have writtten scores of checks on it with no problems at all. I even recently wrote a check (which cleared easily) to an auto dealer for about 10 times the amount of the current check ($1, 998). This check was also rejected by the Telecheck machine. These rejections caused me much humiliation and incovenience. I had to drive several miles to my bank to draw out cash to pay the bill and had to drive back to the clinic. I did call the Telecheck company a second time but just went round and round with the rep and a supervisor over the phone. I never did receive any GOOD reason why my checks had been rejected. I am trying to protect other consumers from the erroneous and inefficient processes of this company's check verification service.
Screw You Wal-Mart & Telecheck May 15, 2011
Denied Return
I received a video game purchased at Wal-Mart for my birthday. I did not want this particular game so I took it to their store so I could return & exchange for a different one. They confirmed the still brand new & sealed game was purchased at Wal-Mart, but during the process they had to enter my driver license number & it denied the return request. They printed off a sheet saying I must have a bad check in their system. This I did not understand cause I have not had my own checking account for nearly 3 years & it was not maybe a month earlier I had brought back a computer monitor & exchanged it with no troubles. They gave me a number to call Telecheck which handles this stuff for them. I called them & went through 3 or 4 people all stated that according to their system I have not & do not owe Wal-Mart anything. However, I was then told by both Telecheck & Wal-Mart that they could not fix their system from saying I owe money even though I really don't & I would still not be able to return any items. DO WHAT? Their both telling me I don't owe anything & have done nothing wrong, but just because their system is messing up & saying otherwise I get same treatment as someone whom wrote bad checks to them? I admit at this point I told everyone how stupid this was & left, but here I sit nearly 2 weeks since that day & I have contacted both several times with same conclusion. This is the biggest load of crap I have ever been involved with. I don't understand why Wal-Mart wouldn't just let me exchange the game. Telecheck told them I did not owe anything & they confirmed the game was purchased at a Wal-Mart store. I'm trading one brand new game for another brand new game of the same exact price, how could there be a problem with that? I have not been so pissed off over a ordeal with a store ever in my life. I finally gave up on exchanging the game myself, my brother did it for me no problems. Sadly, I will have to always find someone else to return whatever items back to Wal-Mart for me unless they suddenly decide to think logically & really start actually caring about their consumers.

Denied Check and Debit Card Transactions
I have a small business banking account, and have utilized my business debit card and checks for years. On 5/11/11 telecheck processing denied my debit card, and a check (both methods of payment). I phoned my bank to for shock of identity theft. They confirmed the correct good standing account balance. The bank also informed me to look for contact information on the denied receipts and to contact the third party processing company. I phoned telecheck, they "updated my information". The operator informed me that the information would be updated in their system in 5-7 business days, do not try to process again, it will still be denied. I then utilized a personal account to pay the vendor. I was on a business trip, the debit card was denied 3 additional times by different vendors. I phoned telecheck today to speak with supervision/manager to try to get this mistake made on their behalf more quickly remedied (because freezing my ability to pay vendors does not work & is nuts), and also to request a letter stating why my account was denied and could not be processed and the length of time this error is to occur. (This letter is needed to put with my receipts, in event I need to justify IRS records for co-mingling personal and business expenses, while my account remains frozen by this inefficient third party company that has complete power to block your funds, and no way to correct mistakes. ) The only way I have found to place complaint with Telecheck is to write a letter to a snail mail address. The fact that a processing company that is not my bank has the complete ability to block all types of funds and render your money useless for 1 week is outrageous. If anyone has suggestions on how to stop this company, please advise.

Rip off
I wrote a check and it was declined. When I called telecheck, the recording told me I had two checks for $17.63 written on 12/16/02 (they were identical), that were returned. After they gave me two different numbers to call, they finally told me that I had one check on their record. I told them that it was impossible and asked where the check was written. They told me the store, which I knew I did not shop at. I also asked them why there was two checks indicated, they said that there was only one. However, the recording is stating that there are two checks. When they asked me what bank I had, they told me the check was written from a bank I had never heard of. They told me to 'just pay it' and when I refused and explained that they were hurting my check writing, they told me 'no, you are by writing bad checks'. I then asked for a copy of this check and they told me to write a letter and fax it to them requesting a copy of the check. They told me it would take 7-10 days. A month later I called them and they told me they were still 'requesting' the check. They said it was up to the 'company' to get it to me, and they should be getting it to me 'anyday now'. Three weeks after that I called again, and got the same answer. Two weeks again, same answer. To this day, I still have not seen a copy of this check, but still cannot write a check. It soulds to me like this company does these things on purpose to make people pay for things, just to fix the problem.

Stole my money
Telecheck took the 251.00 payment for a Sears Appliance Warranty from my account twice, they are holding my money and will not credit it back to me until I PROVE to them that they took it, they can see it right on their computer and admit they made the mistake, Why do I have to pay for affidavit letters from my bank and wait 7 to 10 days after Telecheck receives them to get MY money back. Do not use a merchant who uses telecheck, telecheck steals money and only gives it back if you will fight them for it.

How to 'get back' at Telecheck
How do you "get back" at Telecheck merchants for refusing your check? Easy - write checks! Buy something small & returnable that their system can take a "risk" on. Wait a few days then return it. After you've got your money back, buy it back. Keep writing checks to buy and return the same item over and over. The merchant will pretty much hate you, but you must tell the merchant that you're doing this because their check service demands it. After a month or so, start buying and returning returnable stuff worth even more money. Keep politely doing this until you are denied entry to the store or you've raised your Telecheck credit level (which is funny, because writing a check is not a 'credit' transaction) to where you want it. Or until you tick off the merchant that told you that your perfectly good check was DENIED by their system. They may change check verification companies or start complaining to Telecheck themselves! This could also lead to store managers having some explaining to do as their sales are inflated and they have a higher-than-average return rate. So today I'm starting small, writing a check for something for less than $10 to take back on Monday. The merchant, Best Buy, will certainly get tired of me and their Telecheck system!

Telecheck does not provide or release a list of its merchants. They are associated with one of the nation's biggest credit card processing companies, First Data. My financial annoyance will bother one store; but together we can bother hundreds, thousands, millions! Who will stand with me and buy and return stuff so our merchants will stop letting Telecheck treat us honest check writers like poop?

2/16/2011: Telecheck refused my perfectly good check in-store at Best Buy in Indianapolis, Indiana. I was humiliated in line when the cashier announced "Ma'am, your check is denied" in front of all those people and employees. The money for the laptop computer was in my account, all of my ID matched everything else, I am a Rewards cardholder, and they wouldn't accept my check. Upset, I called the 800 number from my cell phone in the parking lot. I was stunned to find out that the reason why I can't write a check is because I hadn't written a check. See, according to the representative, Telecheck lets you write checks for little amounts of "under $100" for "a few months" before allowing you to increase the allowable amount above the default $100 limit. After whatever magic thingy occurs in their system, you're allowed to write checks in higher amounts. It's like you're building up a trusting relationship between Telecheck and your bank account. I didn't want a relationship, I wanted a laptop. I went home and bought the dern laptop online with the SAME ACCOUNT that Telecheck denied in-store and I'll be picking it up 2/18/2011.

Once I'm back there, I will write a check for something I don't need and doesn't fall under Best Buy's illegal 14-day return policy. Then, after 10 days (the check will clear) I will bring it back to Best Buy and return it. I will then write a check and BUY BACK the exact SAME ITEM I just returned and add something else for a few dollars. I will keep doing this to build up this trusting relationship with Telecheck. When Best Buy complains, I'll tell them that next year I might buy a stove, and this is the only way I can use a check in their store because the check processing service they use demands this action. I'll ask THEM to call Telecheck's 800 number and spend their time talking to the ineffective customer service agents at their overseas call center - who are trained to repeat the same script used by the automated system. Since Telecheck refuses to provide a list of stores that they service (or even name them!), I can only do this at Best Buy. This way I can write checks - because Telecheck says they refused my perfectly good check because I don't write them checks. Now excuse me while I stare at a picture of a snake eating its own tail.

That's right. To pay Telecheck merchants by check, you must write checks so that Telecheck can check your check. Once Telecheck has cashed enough of your checks, Telecheck will let you write Telecheck checks in larger amounts to their merchants. If enough of us infuriate the Telecheck merchants perhaps Telecheck's merchants will force Telecheck to either change their policies or stop treating the merchant's customers like ***. I don't even know why Best Buy says they take checks since Telecheck won't approve your check unless you've already bought stuff with the checks they won't take! Let the store managers complain about a high return rate, let them get in trouble for having deceptive sales reports! Let them be embarrassed and humiliated instead of being able to do this to their customers. And, most importantly, let them know what you're doing AND WHY!!! Screw Telecheck!

All merchants should quit using this company
The only thing I did wrong was run out of checks and had my bank print me a few checks until I could get my new checks in. I had 1 check left out of my check book and went to the store and presented one that the bank printed and telecheck denied it-gave them the one left out of my check book and they approved it. After calling them, I was told by a foreign speaking person that there was no history on my account and when she would not listen to me, promptly hung up on me. I called again and got the person and told her I wanted to speak with someone above her that I refused to talk to her. I waited and got another foreign speaking person that I told I had already been hung up on and I wanted to talk to someone that would listen to me. I wanted to know how 1 check could be approved and another denied at the same store at the same time with the same account, name everything the only difference was that one was printed at the bank and the other wasn't. She assured me that it was fixed and I should not have any more problems! HA! I go grocery shopping the next day and have the same issues! I hope the merchants that use this service realize they are losing money this way, as I went to another grocery store that had no problems taking my check!

denied check
It was nice to see so many other complaints against Telecheck after being humiliated at my local Meijer store over a $59.00 check that was denied because it did not meet Telecheck's "guidelines". When I called the customer service number, I asked to please be enlightened as to what these guidelines were, since I was quite positive I had over 10 times the amount needed to cover the check in the account. Apparently, we don't write enough checks for their company to recognize us and it appeared suspicious. Really? Let's not forget that there was a sudden influx of checks in the past couple days...can we say Christmas??? This was the most ridiculous thing I had ever experienced, and customer service was of no help at all. I beg any merchant who uses this company to please reconsider.

Check declined
My wife attempted to write a check to the local BMW dealer for service on the car. Her check was declined and of course very embarrasing. We called when we returned home only to find that they have the wrong drivers license information for her account. This had happened about 6 months ago at the Home Depot and didn't think much about it at the time. We will no longer do business with any business that uses TeleCheck. This check verifing system has incorrect information in their data base. My wife has had this checking account for many years and has written will over 4000 checks.
