It seems like any body whose been to New York or L.A. to do bit part work in movies and television considers themselves to be "actors", and almost as bad, they consider themselves to be acting TEACHERS. Such is the case in Birmingham, AL with a guy who runs acting "classes" at little, run-down studio called The Actor's Outlet. Disorganized, unprofessional, rude, and above all else, a HEAVY favortism toward teenage and twenty-something girls. He liberally uses profanity and even screams and loses his temper. And for what? Teaching absolutely nothing.
His "excercises" are things that can be learned in any high school drama class. And his on-camera training is average at best. Now I must admit, he does have extensive TV commercial experience, but again, that doesn't necessarily qualify him to be a teacher. I certainly didn't notice any teaching certificates on the wall. Unfortunately, I don't think a license is required for this kind of thing.
So, if you're an aspiring actor, or are the parent of an aspiring actor, take note: Do your homework before selecting an acting class. Talk to a high school drama teacher, a community theatre leader, get on the internet, read reviews, get the most for your money! I paid $200.00 for nothing. I myself am a local professional actor in Birmingham, and have applied none of his methods to my work. And I still get regular work.
Actor's Outlet is actually located in a Birmingham suburb called Homewood. Do yourself a favor: stay away.
