I hired Todd Engerman to rip out my leaking shower and install a new shower pan and then tile it. He talked like he knew what he was doing and seemed like a clean cut guy. I gave him the job. His bid was lower and competitive, but not too low as to cause any hesitation. I met with him at Home Depot in North Seattle. We pick out my tile and grout, which I paid for, and then loaded it into my car. Before I left with all my tile and grout, I gave him a 400$ deposit for materials. I had him sign and date a contract describing the job and the 400$ materials deposit transaction. We both had copy. I took off, and he was supposed to start the next day. He did not. This is the lie of an email he sent me, and then he no-longer answered his emails or phone calls:
"I don't even know where to begin, this morning I went to home depot to by supplies and in the parking lot in the day my car was broken into and tools and things were stolen. I can not believe this could happen, holly shit. This is crazy to a small town boy like me. I am not sure what this means. I know you are in a hurry to get shower done and not sure I will be able to do now. If you can wait a day for me to figure out that would be great if not I understand and will send you your money to your new address right away. If you can wait till tomorrow for me to figure this out and see if I can still finish for you that might be faster then hiring someone else in long run. I am really sorry about all this. Oh yes by the way they stole my cheap ass phone as well might take me a day or two to replace. Once again sorry for all this buying a house and moving is enough to worry about, you should not have to worry about this also. "
I replied that I wanted my money back and for him to let me know where I could come pick it up. Of course, no reply.
At this time, he is continuing to answer Craigslist adds. It upsets me there isn't a better was to stop this guy from scamming other people. Do not hire this guy. He took off with my money and has done it to other people as well.
